View Full Version : Try a new experience!

OK, so for some time now I've been highly intent on trying new experiences. Not all of them as extreme as skydiving, but I'm talking more the smaller and more easily achieved stuff.
One of my favourites is trying new restaurants, the variety that most people haven't even considered. Moroccan, Spanish, Rastafarian etc.
Another one I've recently been doing a lot of is nunchuk tricks. I wouldn't say I'm professional at it, but I still manage to raise a few eyebrows.
However, I was at the house of a bloke who I've never really had the chance to hang out with often, as he's the housemate of another mate. She wasn't at the house yet, so I was hanging out with him, showing off the chuks, and he said "Yeah man, I've been working on something myself, I'm not sure how interested you'll be, ever heard of contact juggling?".
Then he pulls out this glass ball, and starts doing the stuff that david bowie did on labyrinth. I was absolutely blown away.
hFafcjA_p7E
So yeah, we spent the next couple of hours with him working on chuk tricks and me working on contact juggling. Now, once i'm financially stable again, the plan is to visit a place called "Juggle Art" and get one of the plastic balls, and one of the laminex ones to learn this stuff with. Apparently he's been doing it for a year, and you can tell by how smooth his moves are that the work has paid off, but he is looking to get to a higher level, while I'd be happy just to get to his level. ;)
In this thread, what I'm basically looking for is ideas of new stuff to try out. Doesn't have to be over the top, it could be as simple as a party trick you do for friends. Or a really cool tourist destination, or a great photo opportunity. Maybe there's a cool out of the way shop that nobody knows of, or a really shiny nightclub that people have hardly heard of. There are endless options here, so tell all! What do you really enjoy doing? What would you like to try? What's a common experience for you that is uncommon to most people? Maybe you've found a great animal farm, maybe somewhere that teaches day classes in pottery really cheap!
Go hard people! :D

Well probably not the biggest thing but I've recently started having a little Tomato Sauce with my large English breakfast (I previously had not). Not really the greatest thing, only a slight improvement but worth going to the cupboard (I don't put mine in the fridge) for.

I've started adding avacado to everything. I spread some avo on a pie the other day and it was quite nice. Avo is great to replace anything!

That's awesome, never tried it but definitely interested. Personally I've always felt avocado is too buttery if that makes sense. I've had it on a few sandwiches but found it slightly overpowering. Would pep but can't :/

It does make sense if you worked in the produce section of Woolworths for 18 months and would see everywhere "AVACADO IS NATURES BUTTER".

I really wish I could contribute to this therad :P. Contact juggling looks very cool.
I took up Keyboard a few months ago after having convinced myself for years I was too old to take up (and get reasonably good at) a musical instrument, but I'm really happy now that I did. Wish I'd given it a go years ago, as there's no better time-consuming pursuit than learning an instrument.
I also hope to learn cooking soon, take up swimming again, and maybe get back in to improvisational comedy. There's a lot of things I want to do once I finish my thesis.

Avacado and satay sauce work with almost everything. Combined, they are even mightier. Try adding avacado and satay sauce to pizza, pure magic happens.
As for me, I've tried eel sushi, which is apparently far more progressive than I expected based on the various reactions I've gotten when discussing it. It was rather nice.

Shooting is actually a whole lot of fun. Was actually really close to getting my license before I realized all the crap you have to go through to actually keep a firearm on your property. Apart from all the safes, locks and security measures, police have the right to enter your property at any time. Not to mention that if anyone makes a complaint against you about, you'll lose your license. Also, apparently I can't own a f88 Steyr for private use. :p

Karate - if I knew where I kept the paperwork from all those years ago, I could tell you more of the specifics. It was just a local thing held at the local primary school by a male sensei of nidan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_(rank)#Ranks_in_Japanese) rank, with assistance from a female brown-belt, and from memory combined traditional formal martial arts with kickboxing. Only ever reached green belt before I stopped going, and regrettably a lot of what I learnt has faded in recent years.

I learned how to firedance in my second year of uni after my friend learned and I got jealous of all the attention he got. I've always wanted to try contact juggling - I never knew that's what it's called until now, will have to give that site a look.
Since I got my GT-Four I've been driving a lot harder and learning a lot more about cars, engines and driving in general - I learned how (and why) to double clutch and heel-toe shift, and love taking it down winding backroads whenever possible.

Yeah, exactly the same thing but with a different name. I've got a pair of short staffs (http://www.homeofpoi.com/shop/productDetails/Short-Twirling-Fire-Stick) and an even shorter baton which is great for fast spinning and throws.
It looks like Home of Poi sells contact juggling balls so I'll probably order a couple next week, if I can find a book on it somewhere. Sadly the only contact juggling book on the site is for multi-ball tricks - I'm looking for something a little more basic I think ;)

It's difficult to actually burn yourself while firedancing. I mean, you can get black soot marks and singed hair but any serious burns are very unlikely.
On the topic, I hate that most people who do firedancing are goddamn hippies without jobs. I can't go to a meet without someone trying to start a conversation about Nietzsche or ranting to me about how the government is repressing free energy technology.
The other kind of people you'll find at meets are the ones who take it far too seriously and are very openly and loudly cautious about everything, just to let everyone know that they are the professionals and the rest of us should look up to us and marvel at their wisdom.
I don't go to too many meets anymore and prefer just to fire twirl at parties or with a couple of mates.

I've had nearly four straight months of 'new experiences'.
My favourite ones have been... A three hour ride on a 300km/h shinkansen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVwFsIN7rpo), teaching in two rural Japanese high schools, and this;
http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp269/buronzu/New/shisoume.jpg
Japanese basil flavoured Pepsi and umeboshi (pickled plum) flavoured potato chips. Two of my favourite things ever. When I moved to Japan, I vowed to try everything at least once. Even when I've had NO idea what's on my plate, I've chowed down on it, often with surprising results. This happens very frequently.
I'm still tackling my biggest 'experience'. Last year in March I moved to Melbourne and started learning Japanese. That has taken me to... well... Japan, where I've been self-studying the language every day. I really won't be satisfied until I have some semblance of fluency.
That said, I wouldn't mind trying contact juggling now... >.>

You are awesome. This is the sort of thing I would normally say in pep, but our lords and masters have taken it away :p , so here it is on public view, my love (from afar) of you. Hope the teaching is going well, Buronzu.
As for new experiences, I am always up for most things, and generally try and make my first response to any request/challenge a 'yes we can' rather than a 'no we can't'. That said, I wish I'd done more traveling as a young man. I did quite a bit, but places like South America and Africa remain on my to do list, and they shouldn't.

This was more fighting with real armour and real (though blunt) weapons, and they weren't really into changing their speech and stuff - it was more like social outcasts wailing on each other with weapons. They basically have their own smithy set up and forge all of there armour and weapons, which is pretty cool but takes an arse load of hard work and know how.

I also have a scar above my right eye from where Abe Saffron's grandson whacked me in the face with a broadsword, but that's another story.
No penetration. This time it was a good thing.

lol
This was more fighting with real armour and real (though blunt) weapons, and they weren't really into changing their speech and stuff - it was more like social outcasts wailing on each other with weapons. They basically have their own smithy set up and forge all of there armour and weapons, which is pretty cool but takes an arse load of hard work and know how.
Oh sorry man, I must have miscommunicated there.
I wasn't comparing the SCA with those guys. As socially outcasted as those guys may have been, when it comes to the social scale, the SCA wouldn't have been high enough on it to lick the armor plated boots of the blokes you're talking about. Seriously.
There were a few fun people in the SCA I went to. Last I spoke to them, they'd been pretty much forced to leave. Ah, factional mentality.

I took up squash this year. Played it every week for a good 4 months or so. Havent had the time recently though which is a shame as its quite a fun game.
Squash is one of the best sports getting around, and probably the best individual sport. I played competitively for five years and want to get back into it next year. Great work out, though.
It's way better than tennis. Tennis is average.
