David Tennant is the current (10th) incarnation Doctor.
http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/218/doctorwhotennant32.jpg
Hi David!
But his days are numbered as he only has 3 specials left to air, The Waters of Mars around October (in the UK) then a 2 parter apparently around christmas where he will no doubt regenerate into Doctor number 11, played by Matt Smith. He'll also be putting in a 2 episode appearance in the 3rd season of Sarah Jane Adventures so there's still a but more of him to go!
However, filming for the new season has started today so the new Eleventh Doctor costume has been revealed in the following spoiler tags

GIANT version here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/medialibrary/images/misc/karen_matt_large.jpg)
He looks like my high school maths teacher!
The chick is his new assistant, Amy Pond, played by Karen Gillan who will apparently be sporting her natural Scottish accent. ACH!

EDIT
UPDAAAAAATE: Matt Smith has now made his debut and put in a fantastic first performance. David Tennat will be missed, especially after his sad farewell, but onwards and upwards, and GERONIMO! (I hope he doesn't say Geronimo too often)

I don't mind his appearance. Eccelstone kicked off the news series nicely, and Tennant carried it well. So there's no reason to instantly hate on Smith. I'll give him a chance. It'll certainly be an adjustment;
The Doctor is a very special part, and it takes a very special actor to play him. You need to be old and young at the same time, a boffin and an action hero, a cheeky schoolboy and the wise old man of the universe. As soon as Matt walked through the door, and blew us away with a bold and brand new take on the Time Lord, we knew we had our man
The bigger question is if the show can maintain momentum with lead writer Russell Davies stepping down.
Theiffy
20-07-2009, 09:48 PM
Yeah, Russel T Davies was awesome. But the team hasn't really changed apart from him, and Steven Moffatt worked with RTD so i'm going to try and trust their judgement on the new series. I remember taking a dislike to Billie Piper when they announced she was going to be in the series, then she turned out to be good.

Also I've been fascinated lately with the whole "regeneration" thing, whether or not it will end with 12 because the Master has, on numerous occasions, inhabited bodies other than his own. Then again I suppose this is a whole "good vs. evil" thing. I still don't think he's dead.

I'm sure they will find some way around the whole regeneration thing.
Bad Wolf made the TARDIS go all whack job and can now let the Doctor regenerate infinitely. This will only be revealed when it's supposed to be the Doctor's last life. The TARDIS then, due to some special alignment of planets in the cosmos, actually changes shape into a shark, and the new Doctor then proceeds to jump over it on a dune buggy.

Apparently the Christmas Special is a 2-parter. 4 specials total, but they're cheating.
Stevorooni
24-07-2009, 12:30 PM
The Specials are:
"Planet of the Dead" which was recently on TV
"Waters of Mars" which airs in October or something
Then the 2-parter Christmas Specials which may or may not air together and David Tennant presumably regenerates at the end.
As for the Regeneration limit it hasn't been mentioned at all during the new series but once they run out they'll probably just invent a magical plot device that gives him more lives. Or just cancel the series because they painted themselves into a corner all those years ago and can't write their way out.
I hope they keep the limit and just have him regenerate into a 14th body and beyond with no explanation, which will add to the mystery of the character.
AranchineD
24-07-2009, 01:11 PM
On his 14th "regeneration" the Doctor actually transforms into a TARDIS...and then see the very first doctor taking that exact TARDIS. MIND BLOWN
Although the series would have to have the death of the Doctor at some point, if you go back to that Library episode with that chick that actually knew the Doctor's real name, I assumed that was because she was there when he died. Or, you know...that woman was the final regeneration of the Doctor...

The classic series has a few escapes they can use to give the Doctor more regenerations. I think it's the novelisation of Caves of Androzani that suggests that the 5th->6th regeneration doesn't count due to the elixir thing he managed to drink. There's also some crazy Time Lord technology that's implied to be able to give another cycle of 12 regenerations.
And, of course, they can always just make something up. 12 certainly isn't a limitation, though.
I'm just wondering if Steven Moffatt will stop trying to load up on Nightmare Fuel in every episode now that he's heading it up.
Well, he still won't be writing every episode, so it probably won't be that bad. That said, I suspect that there'll be a lot of similarities with the Philip Hinchcliffe era of "gothic horror" Doctor Who.
Doctor Who is still, at its heart, a kids show, so they can't exactly go overboard, and there's certainly no nightmare fuel unleaded in it.
pecka_a
24-07-2009, 03:17 PM
the only way I can think that they could get out of the whole regen thing is to say that he miss understood how many he got. (being young at the time and all)
lee evans was funny in "Planet of the Dead" if your into stand up comedy you really need to check his dvds out.
Stevorooni
24-07-2009, 04:32 PM
In The Five Doctors the Master was offered a new cycle of regenerations from the Time Lords so that implies it's possible to reset the odometer.
But it won't be hard for them to overcome, he can just find some magic gem or time lord device thing that gives him more lives.

If they could go back to the BilliePiperUniverse after it "closed forever" they can pretty much write their way out of anything.
I'm guessing something involving the sonic screwdriver.

The continiuity of the new series doesn't really equate to the older ones, except in the case of cameos from Sarah Jane / K9 et al.
The Master is not dead-ish. The Master who was shot and "chose" not to regenerate was actually a human body which could not regenerate. Watch the two part family of blood eps from season 3 and the last 3 episodes to figure out what the Master did, it was a pretty ingenious escape plan and means John Simm can play the Master again (as a cloned body).

EDIT: I know people could argue that camp is one of Doctor Who's characteristic, but in this instance he made the situation clumsy; I don't if I'm supposed to loathe the Doctor, or rally behind him, or simply laugh at his antics.

I didn't like him at all at that point when he was gloating about owning the laws of time and being able to do whatever he wanted. I think that was the point too, he becomes something we dislike to really push the point that he had gone too far.

AranchineD
23-12-2009, 09:57 AM
I didn't say otherwise. Just that that was the kind of attitude that Eccleston's doctor had (the 'I'm better than humanity because I'm a Time Lord' attitude) so it wasn't completely out of place for Tennant's doctor to revert to something like that.

Tennant was a champ, and Smith has big shoes to fill.

One I'd agree with. I was happy for the most part with Davies at the helm, and I had a familiar chuckle when his little love child, Jack Harkness, received what I could only see as a pimp-gift. I just can't keep up with the soaring emotional heights Davies brought to the show.
From what I've seen of Moffat, (Blink, Girl in the Fireplace, didn't he also do the "are you my mummy" episode?) he should (hopefully) bring us a thinking man's doctor who. Not emotionless, but less within the realm of orchestral melodrama.

"The Empty Child"/"The Doctor Dances", yes.
Given the tone of his stories, I think the Moffatt/Smith era is going to be much like the Hinchcliffe/Baker era, which was where the series got its reputation for compelling behind-the-sofa viewing.

Rumour is that he's going to play it like he's an old and wise doctor in a young body and that he'll be frustrated because people won't take him seriously because of his appearance.

Doctor Who: Matt Smith makes debut (http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/2010/mar/18/matt-smith-doctor-who-debut)
Where Christopher Eccleston played the role of timelord like a tortured war veteran, and David Tennant veered between big-hearted goofiness and pained introspection, Matt Smith puts a new spin again on the role of planet Gallifrey's most famous export.
Tonight, after one of the longest handovers in television history, the world finally got a first glimpse of the new Doctor in action: part preppy public-school head boy; part gung-ho adventurer and part "nutty professor" – a boy-racer in geography-teacher elbow patches.
The Eleventh Hour, Smith's first full episode in the role, picks up directly after Tennant's swansong The End Of Time, and features the eleventh Doctor crash landing on earth and plummeting straight into a new alien threat while coming to terms with his new body.
He immediately comes face to face with new companion Amy Pond. It gives little away to state that the relationship between the Doctor and his companion operates in a radically different fashion to any that viewers will have seen before.
Smith puts in a commanding performance as the Doctor, with as much chaos running through his body as is unfolding around him in the fictional English village of Leadworth.

As vocal as I am about how hideously ugly Matt Smith is (it looks like his features have all been squashed to the middle of his face), he makes for a decent Doctor. Dr Who enters new world of gaming (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8607925.stm)
Writers from the hit BBC show have joined forces with videogame creator Charles Cecil to come up with four interactive episodes of the show.
....
The four two-hour dramas will allow fans to take on the role of the Doctor, enter different universes and fight some new enemies.
Matt Smith, who plays the Doctor and Karen Gillan, who plays companion Amy, have provided voice-overs.
The first of the games, developed by UK game designer Sumo Digital, will be available for free download via the Doctor Who website in June.
I wouldn't be fussed if it weren't for Charles Cecil's involvement; he of Revolution, famous for Beneath a Steel Sky, and the Broken Sword series.

So I just watched the first episode of the new series.
It does get better right? Because that episode was f***ing shit. And I'm so glad they've introduced a mechanic whereby the Doctor can completely pull solutions out of his ass, instead of just coming up with plans that, while requiring huge leaps in logic, are still built up to in the episode.
EDIT: Oh, Bill Nighy. Okay, I'll give everything else a chance.

I also need an actual screwdriver to insert the batteries and don't have one on me.
Holy shit.
What if the doctor was all like "Oh Goddamn my sonic screwdriver is broken. Good thing I can fix it with my soni... shit."
Then a Dalek zaps him.
PERFECT WAY TO END THE SERIES

I didnt enjoy the second episode as much as the first. Started off cool but then the whole star whale thing seemed really lame to me.

The Daleks should replace their whisk with a Sonic Screwdriver, then they'll be unstoppable.

I thought otherwise and actually enjoyed it. The preview of ep3 looked great and it's nice to see the Daleks in a different role.

I suppose I'd better stop reading this thread on account of pirate spoilers.

First episode was good, only thing I didn't like was the Doctors new outfit. The one he started the episode with was much better.
I'll miss David Tennant but this new guy is doing an alright job.

Took me far longer to warm to David Tennant than it has to Matt Smith. Tennant DID spend his first episode asleep though, a fairly shit introduction.

Tea jokes on the pihs kelaD = brilliant. More of that and they'll have my money. If I was paying for it. Which I'm not.

On the train this morning I saw that someone had graffitied "MATT SMITH IS A FAGET" (with that spelling) on a fence.
Not sure if it was about someone else called Matt Smith or just a David Tennant fan .
As for the 3rd episode I have mixed feelings
It seemed more like "Victory of the Dalek New Release Toys".
The new look is a little silly and will take some adjustment but I think the episode could have benefited from being a 2 parter and skipping the "Stop the bomb with love!" bit
Maybe I had preset my standards to high because it was a Dalek episode.

I really liked the way their new voices sounded even more threatening.
