The second of two downloadable content packs for Xbox Live now has an official release date from Rockstar. The Ballad of Gay Tony will be available for download from the Xbox Live Marketplace and as part of the standalone Episodes from Liberty City disc on October 29, 2009.

The plot of the episode will follow Luis Fernando Lopez, a Dominican street gangster and bodyguard of nightclub entrepreneur Anthony "Gay Tony" Prince. The plot will apparently take place in the same time frame as the main GTA IV plot, so it'll be interesting to see how Luis's adventures intersect with Niko's. Astute observers may note that Luis is also the third member of the Impossible Trinity along with Niko and Johnny Klebitz.

Further details such as price are yet to be announced but the official Web site (http://www.rockstargames.com/theballadofgaytony/) for Ballad currently has a desktop wallpaper of a so-far unannounced female character.

just finished Lost and Damned 100%

Had to go on a few different man-dates, win air hockey (which took forever because the controls are awful) and find that last damn seagull. I went through a seagull guide that had pictures of every location, and of course the one that I was missing was the very last location I checked.

Anyway, IT IS DONE. Now I can put the game away again until October 29th

I see a dude riding a train roof, which currently isn't possible because the game engine doesn't handle vehicles moving under Niko well. I really hope that's a moving train and they've fixed the issue, because that opens up stuff like riding in the back of pickups etc. :D

USA Today is also running a piece on the upcoming expansion (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/gaming/2009-08-31-gta-iv_N.htm) that reveals some new plot details. One particular mission will involve parachuting onto a glass-windowed skyscraper while another involves lifting a subway car using a Skyhook helicopter. The article also outlined the basic plot, in that Luis is forced to take the reins of Gay Tony's empire as his drug problem grows out of control. So hopefully there'll be all the Rockstar-flavoured intrigue and bittersweet/downer endings we've come to expect from the series so far.

Couple of new items. USA Today's Game Hunter's column has an interview with Dan Houser (http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2009/08/the-rest-of-the-story-gta-the-ballad-of-gay-tony/1) about TBoGT and how it ties in with the original game and the first episode. And GTA Gaming has a thread that shares some revelations about the TBoGT's weapons (http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=424300) courtesy of Australian Official Xbox Magazine.

A short new trailer is up on the Rockstar website. Only two (possibly) new cars (sort of), a non-FIB Buffalo and this-

http://members.optusnet.com.au/trinityjayone/NewCarGTA.png

With all the run-of-the-mill sedans in the game it's hard to tell if that's a new body, but those wheels don't look familiar.

Never had a reason to dislike one of your posts unlike the the whole forum but . . .

Still fun to play, picked up the multilayer after not having played a while and 2 hours past without me knowing and I had the best time in a while.

I mean where can you pick up a game listening to tunes of your choice flying along a freeway where a helicopter is chasing you and then all of a sudden you hit something and go flying over the edge and some dude you have not ever met just laughs and then you start the next round to reciprocate the the favor.

So yeah your post is lacking.

Even with the new DLC I am sure I'll have some fun.

I doubt it. I had a lot of fun with it and highly reccommend it, but it felt a little samey on times. I dug the narrative (not to mention that incredible shotgun), but I missed Niko, and it was a little short to really make good use of the whole buddy system thing.

Having said that, did you try out the Chopper vs. Chopper multiplayer mode? That thing is incredibly fun. All the multi modes it added were pretty cool, but that one is awesome.

It does seem like a rather odd move on Rockstar's part. Having a poster or some other physical trinket in the "boxed" version of TLaD, I can understand. Having actual in-game content be exclusive to a disc version of a simultaneous release like this feels really odd. I wonder what the rationale was behind this decision. Favourite moment so far is getting Luis way too drunk in the nightclub (after a bout of bathroom sex, which seems to have gotten him a floozy on the side), passing out and waking up on an island in the middle of a park lake.

Also, something awesome I noticed in the game a while back but never posted about - if you're playing multiplayer and your car breaks down, you can get it working again by revving the engine while a friend pushes the car for you with their own car.

Parachutes make Freeroam great fun. Either from doing Basejumps or bailing from a helicopter duel.
Also Gold Uzi feels like rape online. The new MG is alright, huge clip but the AR rifle seems more accurate (and thus use less bullets). The Pistol, Shotty, SMG and Sticky bombs are all awesome. Too bad there doesn't seem to be no LOTD Sawn-off shotgun in it :(

Same reason the game has a slight fish-eye lens effect- makes the world look bigger than it is while using less resources. I just finished the final mission. Took me three shots. Awesome, awesome setting for the mission. Obviously this whole thing was planned very far in advance - not only because of the villain involved, but because that place (avoiding spoilers here) was clearly designed with an epic shootout in mind.

The emphasis on that mission seemed to be on taking everyone out really fast. I spray 'n prayed with the big-arse machine gun for the first four or so sets of goons, then focused on guarding the staircase when my health got low towards the end of the first section. Just barely pulled it off first time. I died twice once the fight moved outside, though. Fun mission.

Interesting Parachute glitch, haven't tried it in single player though. Open you chute, pull back on the left thumbstick then rapidly tap LT and RT. Took me several goes until I worked out a system. What I did was load up the grenade launcher to capacity prior to starting, then when the cutscene finishes you run back and to the left of where Tony is, taking cover behind the bit of wall that sticks out in the corner. Kill the dudes that come up the stairs, then lob a grenade off the balcony and finish off any survivers. When the next wave comes, a few goons will run up the stairs so go back to the corner straight away. Once dead, go back to grenade lobbing as only those few goons will come up at the beginning of each wave, the rest never will.

I just got Episodes From Liberty City and beat Lost and Damned, so now it's onto this.

GTAIV was the most overrated thing to happen in video gaming since The Sims. It was like they tried to make it all serious and Law and Order-y and really, they just sucked all the fun out of it. Boring missions, characters, dialogue that was just redundant four letter word stupidity.

Lost and Damned was maybe slightly better, nothing to rave about.

Ballad of Gay Tony is already shaping up to be something special, I really hope it continues that way.

I'm deadly serious, and unfortunately, so was that game.

An awkward mix of "look how important I am" themes like a trite Hollywood movie custom made for the Oscar crowd, or like Law and Order, as I said, and then some really stupid gratuitous humor.

I was hoping the main character would be a bad arse, but he was just an annoying crybaby. None of the other characters were remotely interesting and Roman was one of the most irritating characters I've seen yet. Okay, he likes titties... we get it. And "cousin! It is your cousin!" Ugh. Is that what passes for great characters these days?

I did enjoy Saints Row 2, actually.

I just thought they tried to hard to come up with characters that could compete with those you might find on prime time TV in terms of making the average person feel that they were dealing with something very important and incisive, and forfeited all the fun in the process. None of the missions were particularly interesting.

But anyway. I just played some more of BoGT (did the golf/Rocco mission) and it's great so far. Much better than L&D. Hope it continues this way...

I think that you and I may have differing opinions on what constitutes "fun". I don't think that a game necessarily has to be crazy and over-the-top to be compelling, but I also recognise that that particular style may resonate more with certain gamers than with others. For instance, I felt a greater sense of immersion and verisimilitude with IV's more grounded mechanics than I did with previous games and with SR2 (e.g. the vehicle physics in IV are much better and not so slot car-like). I felt more connected and involved with the game world.

Similar to Shorty's post; immersion = fun. GTAIV is still unparralleled when it comes to creating a game world that you geuinely care about. Liberty City breathes unlike any other sandbox game.

I could never understand the complaints about it not being fun, the script writing is so funny, you still blow a lot of shit up, and the bank robbery mission is probably the best ever moment in the GTA universe.

Still the best experience of this generation imo.

AranchineD
15-11-2009, 10:44 AM
For me doing anything in GTA4 felt like trying to trudge through a vat of oatmeal mixed with glue, and it actually destroyed the immersion for me when it seemed like I had to go through a number of unnecessary, slow steps to accomplish anything.

By the end of the game I was hardly having any fun even when I was just causing mayhem. Don't get me wrong, the game is good, but for me it wasn't an experience that really lasted for any considerable amount of time.

I played the game a while ago, of course, and what sticks in my mind is just this feeling of Niko just switching from 'fixed animation' to 'fixed animation' at a snail's pace, like he would act three seconds after I press a button to make him do something; he fell down, I go make a sandwich while I waited for him to get back up; it felt like it took just that little bit too much time to steal a car; controls in general just feeling like it takes 'too many' buttons to do things; the hand-to-hand combat (which I know isn't a main point of the game) feels like they tried to make things more complex but it ends up clunky and obtuse; I've spoken before about how I didn't really like driving in the game, it was like an arcade driving game attempted to be made with 100%, true-to-life physics and it didn't work for me.

And apart from controlling Niko himself: the 'relationships' aspect, like you mentioned, I know they had you pick them up and drive back so you could 'talk' with them, but the entire time I wanted them to talk during the activities (when it's a mini-game like bowling, etc.) and just skip the driving part, and I didn't like how many missions required you to drive out somewhere and THEN drive to the actual destination of the mission.

I say these with the disclaimer that I didn't even take note of or really care in any way about them until I had spent quite some time with the game, but once these things were in my head that was pretty much it for by enjoyment with the game.

I suppose the tl;dr version of this is that while Rockstar wanted to take the series in a new direction (which is fair enough), at the same time they kept a lot of the elements from the old games in there and for me the two clashed against each other. Personally, I think they should have gone all or nothing with the game.

AranchineD - I didn't have a problem with the movement so much as I had a problem with shooting from cover. I felt like the player character's were much too slow in popping out from cover and the animations were overly long. They looked cool and everything, but at times it felt like my character was moving in slo-mo.

It wasn't a deal-killer, but I think Rockstar really need to make the character's movement more "snappy" for the next one. Picking off moving characters is kind of a pain if it takes almost a couple of seconds to emerge from cover and fire.

I was just searching for this thread to post the same thing but from a different website but bastard Shorty got in first (http://www.kotaku.com.au/2010/01/grand-theft-auto-episodes-from-liberty-city-announced-for-ps3-and-pc/#more-376848)

The Episodes were my reason for buying a 360 back in the day because I wanted the extra content with GTA4, and I thought Microsoft paid big bucks to fund their development, but whatever. I have both consoles anyway now so it all worked out in the end.

Yay! I knew I read somewhere that the eps were only exclusive for 360 for a certain amount of time.

It was always a timed exclusive thing I thought?

Creedy

It was never considered timed exclusive, Microsoft touted it's exclusiveness because they gave Rockstar a 50 million dollar loan interest free.

Okay, I'm really pissed off. So I'm up to the chopper chase mission, I believe it's called Paper Trail. I take off and that's fine but even though I'm flying towards the blip on the radar I always lose them in the first 30 seconds without any warning. Why the hell does it do this?! What can I do to make it stop?

Note: I'm on 360.

You are going the wrong way. Change your route.

I actually think this is a great move. I really liked the episodes. I thought that Rockstar did an excellent job of expanding the universe with interesting characters, storylines and gameplay additions and now even more people can enjoy them.

Well I don't know what wrong with all your traitors but this is the most terrible news I've heard all year, I bought the game on 360 under the presumption that those other inferior platforms would not taint the game's beauty.

But no. That's gone out the window now, when those now laughable mission packs gets released on other platforms, I can just predict now how we'll hear a) from the PS3 crowd "OH THIS GAME IS TOO HARD WAHWAH" and b) from the PC crowd "OH THIS GAME IS TOO EASY WAHWAH". As a result, Rockstar will dumb down future entries in the series, and the great GTA name will be tarnished.

Thanks for your secrets and lies Microsoft and Rockstar. Burn in hell, both of you.

That's the only way I'm getting them.

I hope this is an indiciation that they'll progress onto the next GTA.

And hopefully not a rehash of Vice City or San Andreas either, if they rehash anything make it GTA2.

Otherwise an original setting, possibly in a different timeframe, would be sweet.

Episodes delayed for PC and PS3 two weeks for "minor content changes". (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/18/gta-episodes-from-liberty-city-for-pc-ps3-delayed-two-weeks-du/) Rockstar were quick to point out that these changes weren't in response to any ratings board. The new release dates for both disc and downloadable versions are April 13th for the US and April 16th for Europe.

I first completed it on ps3 upon release but then got sick of waiting and grabbed the additions on 360 so Sony have lost out on my business. I cannot be alone with that decision either.

I think by this point, people might just call you "cheap".

At this point in time I am cheap, I've come to the realization that I have a monster backlog of games to play through. So at the moment I am going through all my Steam games one by one. I haven't actually bought any retail games this year, I was about to the other week but then decided to finally buy my rear speakers.

However with the current exchange rate the temptation to buy games is icreasing.

Shorty

I actually thought it gave his character some depth. Knowing what his family is like (ie. his brother keeps putting him down), you start to understand why Brucie might be as over-the-top as he is. Plus, the cut scene where he finally snaps and clocks Mori in the face is priceless, particularly when Mori starts crying like a little bitch.

That's the correct chronological order to be playing them, but you'll get quite a feature shock going from San Andreas to III. IV is different because the game and the episodes all take place pretty much side-by-side so there's no real "correct" order to play them.
