Couldn't seem to find a thread on the game on the 'new and improved' boards, so here goes.

*That said, if there IS still one and I've missed it, feel free to sort it out. lol.

Motivated by this little tidbit from 1up.com:

The Associated Press reports that Double Fine Productions has filed a countersuit against Activision for attempting to block the release of Brutal Legend. Double Fine argues that Activision's suit intends to hurt the company and the game, and to stop the release in order to protect sales of its Guitar Hero franchise. The suit further claims that Activision showed no interest in the game in 2008 and canceled the project after a failed attempt to brand the game with the Guitar Hero name. Finally, Double Fine claims that the company's livelihood is reliant on the release of Brutal Legend, a counter to Activision's initial claim that the gaming giant would be seriously harmed if the game were released under another publisher.

"Now that we've found a publisher and the game is getting sensational coverage, they want to stop its release," said Double Fine COO Caroline Esmurdoc in a statement. "Double Fine's countersuit is a demonstration of our intention to fight for this game - Activision will not kill 'Brutal Legend.'"

Awesome that they're not taking Activision's BS lying down, and it's totally justified, as all Activision seems to be doing is trying to screw with the game's release.

Reading that piece, I found it interesting that activision were apparently looking to "to brand the game with the Guitar Hero name", which just seems ridiculous, but is Activision to a tee.

I love EA's response to Activision's lawsuit (http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2009/02/activision-brutal-legend-is-ours-ea-activision-is-a-jealous-exhusband.html):

We doubt that Activision would try to sue. That would be like a husband abandoning his family and then suing after his wife meets a better looking guy.

Can't find a good Kelso image for this but

The demo offer is supposed to be available to people outside of the US as well, according to the Brutal Legend Blog's post about it. EB were supposed to be running the offer in AU, however I asked about it yesterday and the guys at EB had no idea they were running the offer and hadn't received any kind of download codes.

The demo will be available to all Live Gold members on the 24th anyway, with Silver members/the PSN to follow the week after that.

No mention of Mastodon, Motorhead, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, Anvil, Motley Crue? Not to mention it includes God of Thunder by KISS, Superbeast by Rob Zombie, Am I Evil by Diamond Head... :p

And OMFG, Riding The Storm by Running Wild. Words cannot describe how ****ing STOKED I am to see that song in the game! If it comes with a pirate themed level/boss, I may just die of happiness. On another note, I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't include Raw Ride for the driving sections, because that would have been EPIC!

Anyway, I just played the demo and I'm even more hyped up for this game then ever before (if that was even possible!). This is gonna be a day one insta-purchase, no question. All through the demo all I could think was 'Holy shit, this could be better than Arkham Asylum'... if not in regards to gameplay, then definitely in regards to creating a setting, characters and mythos that grabs you by the balls and refuses to let go. Plus I laughed at every single joke and one-liner. :p

JB Hi Fi also has a T-Shirt, but they don't tell you what size it is. Therefore, you could potentially end up with a size that's too small to wear.

Oh for the love of...

Guys, Tim Schaffer wrote the game, not Jack Black!

Avoiding this game off the back of Pick of Destiny is like avoiding Blue Velvet because you once saw Dennis Hopper in Space Truckers.

Now if you can't handle Jack Black as an actor and that is putting you off then that is logical (I would say a bit too focused on one aspect of the game) but disliking a game written by Tim Schaffer because of a movie written by Jack Black fails to make any lick of sense whatsoever.

Pretty much what I was saying :/

He's bearable as a supporting actor, or a cameo, but when he's front row cetre (as he was in Pick of Destiny), I just can't take that much whiny obnoxiousness

ElPresidente
13-10-2009, 02:18 PM
But then does that not raise the question of hypocrisy? When I think of my favourite games there are only a small handful that had voice acting that is of a standard close to that of even your most hated Hollywood actor. Why would you let a voice throw you off the purchase?

Most other games I have no idea of the voice acting when going into them. For a game whose concept doesn't stir me (Tim Schaffer man-crush clearly absent), knowing that a person who irritates me so much being invloved only further compounds my disinterest.

Die For Metal is a track from their 2007 album, so it fairly recent. But it was stupid for them to not put in incredible tracks like The Power Of Thy Sword or House Of Death.

It now plays a lot more like Sacrifice but still not quite the same amount of control. But who knows... I may yet unlock an additional power that changes that againg. If you know what Big W's price is, or you have a catalogue which advertises the price, just go to EB and price match it! Based on my experience, EB doesn't give a shit about whether or not the other shop has stock, as long as you know what the price is.

I didn't know the price as it was never in a catalogue that I've seen. Add to this the fact my EB employees aren't idiots and keep tabs on what Big W is doing.

Evidently not from the people in this thread who have been posting about how much they enjoy the game.

Yeah, but I don't actually value their opinions. From people whose opinions I do care for, the game is just a bit shit.

If you don't know what Big W's price is, why are you so determined to buy it there? How do you know they won't also sell it for $110? You seem so determined to get the game from Big W so I assumed that you had a catalogue with an advertised price or something. If you don't, and you simply want the best price, why not try Kmart, Target, JB Hi Fi, or any other place?

Yeah, except all those reviews.

All those reviews? You mean the ones averaging 84% (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/brutallegend)? ;)

Read the giantbomb one yet?

The Giant Bomb one? You mean the one that gave it 60% (currently the lowest score on Metacritic for this game) and said:

"The gameplay, as singular a combination of gameplay styles as it is, suffers from being a jack of all trades and master of none. Like most teenage metalheads, this game has got issues, but if you're willing to look past some very uneven gameplay, Brutal Legend will rock you. Hard."

So even the lowest scoring review on Metacritic gave it over 50% and said it will rock you hard. That doesn't sound like 'most people/reviewers hate the game' to me.

Slippery
15-10-2009, 04:18 PM
To be honest, I don't really think a GB 3 star review and a score of 60% quite line up, at least not by the 7/10 is average standard of most reviewers.

Lex
15-10-2009, 04:46 PM
Yeah. Because metacritic is a great way to judge a game. Look at all the worthless publications giving it 90-100. I read reviews from people whose opinion I trust, and those people are saying the gameplay is kind of crap. Ill still hire it sometime, but I certainly won't buy it. If you dig it, great, that doesn't mean anything to me.

Cerebral
15-10-2009, 05:16 PM
On a side note, I like the stars out of 5 review system. It gives a more accurate representation of a reviewer's opinion (ironically in a numerically less accurate format) by simply giving a ballpark indication of where the reviewer thinks the game is at and makes the content of the review the focus. **** the 70-100 scale most websites use.

Yeah. Because metacritic is a great way to judge a game.

Stop changing the subject because this is confusing enough as it is.

I'm not judging the game based on Metacritic, I'm judging the opinions of the reviewers based on Metacritic. You said that 'all those reviews' were being negative, but Metacritic is showing very favourable reviews. How else am I supposed to gauge the general feeling of reviewers if not for Metacritic? Don't even mention Gamerankings because their score is very positive as well (83.48%).

Look at all the worthless publications giving it 90-100. I read reviews from people whose opinion I trust, and those people are saying the gameplay is kind of crap.

The only 'opinion you trust' that you mentioned by name was Giant Bomb, and they said it was pretty good. As Johnny Cochrane once said, "IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE!" :p

If you dig it, great, that doesn't mean anything to me.

My personal opinion towards this game has got nothing to do with this discussion. The issue is that you're pushing an observation that seems to be flat out wrong. You make a broad claim that the majority of reviews are negative, but they're actually positive. You say you only read reviews from people who's opinion you trust, yet the only one you mentioned said good things about the game. Your argument is crap and makes no sense.

So I saw that I unlocked a Mastodon song, so I thought 'awesome', then I saw "Oblivion (Instrumental)" and I was sad. :(

I agree. I love Oblivion and Crack The Skye, but the instrumental versions are shit. Without the vocals, they're only about half as epic.

This game keeps getting better and better! Now that I've unlocked most of the RTS controls, I'm actually looking forward to battles instead of dreading them. :p

On another note, Ozzy's voice work in this game is brilliant! "Every time you come in here, there's another ****ing scratch on the car!" Classic. Also, I always laugh when I highlight the Eddie Riggs Mt Rushmore thingy and he says "that looks like some guy I used to know..."

EDIT: Does anyone know what to do with those things that are chained up or leather bound? Is it just a song that you unlock the further you go, or something more sinister?

So anyway, the intro movie with Jack Black won me over.

As far as I can tell, this game is Tim Schaeffer trying to replicate as many classic metal album covers as he can in a single video game.

The musou/RTS stuff is pretty clunky, but I'm willing to forgive that for now.

@Lex: This is one of those games where you kind of have to just put aside the mechanics of the game and just enjoy the story and the game world. If you're not really into that kind of epic rock/heavy metal style that the game's going for, then it may not really appeal to you, because the gameplay, while functional, isn't overly spectacular.

I guess the best way to put it is that this game is more about the art than it is about the gameplay, if that makes any sense.

Lex
16-10-2009, 10:10 AM
Oh, i get that, it's why I'm no longer really looking forward to it. As I said, a hire, for sure, but I wouldn't waste any more time on it than that

AranchineD

I've found that the RTS elements are a vehicle to further the heavy metal styling of the game, in the way it's done as a stage battle, and that's why I really enjoy.

Actually that extends to all the gameplay elements of the game. You have racing and timed race side missions, sure, but you're pumping awesome music from a hot rod with machine guns and shit, so it's awesome. You have turret missions, but they're HOT ROD turret missions. Keep people away from target...using a moving mosh pit.

I kept constantly reading in the somewhat negative reviews something along the lines of "If you take all the heavy metal stylings, then you're left with a good game, but not a great one", and everytime I thought that kind of reasoning is utterly moronic. It's the heavy metal stylings that actually make the game a great one.
