View Full Version : The Gaming Merchandise and Memorabilia Thread
We used to have a plushie thread (I think, before the great fire), and I really just wanted somewhere to post this because it's possibly the best thing ever -
http://www.kotaku.com.au/2009/07/knitted-lemmings-exhibit-sheeplike-behaviour/
but I guess consider this a thread for all things related to gaming merchandise and quirky memorabilia. Go nuts.

In about 50 years the Antique Roadshow is going to be friggin ruined.
Ha ha, but then people like Blake can make a living spotting the real deal from the fakes.
'Yes, yes, you can see that this head crab plushie is clearly a forgery because it lacks the requisite white fangs of an official Valve product...'

Except these "collector's items" will have no value with them being produced in large quantities.

And no one will appreciate the value of true antiques and craftsmanship anymore.

I bought a Zelda t-shirt today. I want to punch myself already.
Edit: Yeah, alright, I'm wearing it already.
Hope it's not too tight. Then you would have had to try forcing it on. :)

I now have a Mirror's Edge themed carryall that I'm too embarrassed to actually take to uni.

I wish I had more gaming merchandise. All I have is a heap of Pokemon toys. I was planning to buy some gaming shirts the other day, but couldn't find any decent sellers. It was probably for the best.

Pretty sure that's from one of our competitions. I actually shed a bit of a tear as I packed all three bags as they were really good quality.

The plan is to ruin the Cats pre-season training by setting up dummy traps around the grounds at night.
If we win the premiership this year you can do what you like to pre-season. :)

Incorrect; chinese porcelain was shipped to Europe in their millions circa 1500s-1800s and pristine examples always command good prices.
Antiques need certain things to become antiques; a few of them are time, availability, usefulness and desirability. I'm sure that in 100+ years (assuming we still have electricity - usefulness) your Playstation One with 2 controllers and a selection of games - MINT CONDITION - will be worth quite a sum.
Another factor in the price of antiques is the big one: Provenance. If your PSOne was owned by say... Cathy Freeman or Nelson Mandela then you can pretty much put it into a classy auction and watch your money pour in.
Pretty much most of all the things we refer to as "antique" today was mass-produced.
Yes; I watch Antiques Roadshow religiously; it is the ONLY reality show worth watching.

Yes I'm sure that plastic single mold Ryu figure pumped out of some plastics factory and packaged with SFIV is going to be held with the same respect as chinese porcelain is today.

I fail to see your point. Stuff on that site exhibit either ingenious design, unique skillfull construction, rich credentials or just plain rarity.
The Gaming Merchandise and Memorablia packed in with most LE/CE versions of games is complete garbage.
The vast number of plushies, t-shirts, and figurines are empty trinkets. There's no uniqueness or rarity due to being produced in large numbers. There's no masterful construction or skilled processes involved due to being pumped out of factory production lines.
Maybe if they really meant "limited" when they say limited edition, or if it were hand painted, etc.
Take the Designer's Republic's t-shirts, books and posters. They did limited runs (250, 500), with absolutely no reprints. So while the materials and production method are nothing special, the artwork and rarity is where the value is.

Laz is right insofar as he is advocating that a part of what constitutes a antique is the entire status quo; it's not. It's a wide cross section of items and in no small part includes mass produced, cheap and nasty items that Lazlow has just finished mistakenly deriding.
Crappy Mickey Mouse toys of his first iteration is a prime example of this; cheap and nasty and are only valuable today because nearly all of them are broken and destroyed, plus because MM grew to become a worldwide icon his first anything is valued.
Movie posters are another example; a original 1933 King Kong poster is worth MEGABUCKS and they were produced in their thousands but were discarded.

I'm surprised you guys discount what sillysausage is saying, especially when you look at the 'collector' market out there. There are plenty of old toys now that were mass produced at a point, but are now considered rare and very valuable. Who's to say that this won't happen with some of the 'collectors items' bundled into games?

I'm not discounting it, I'm saying that it's an idiotic market. I hope that it will be some of the things like those 'future antiques' that Sausage linked, but if it ends up being a run of original packaging Attack of the Clones figurines and obscure SF series 'collectibles' that flood the Antiques Roadshow in 50 years, I will be dissapoint. I will also offer up plentiful dick-stabbings.

Some people pay ridiculous amounts of money for the really cheap toys that came in the cereal packets in the 60s and 70s. Anything has the potential to become an antique worth a lot of money if enough people wish to collect it.

Subtle as in shirts that don't look like big gaming advertisements unless you look at them closely or can identify characters.
Those shirts are alright, but all the ones I like are either not in stock or they only have XXXXXL left. I'm a medium :(

Also; the other factor that may work against these "future antiques" is the fact people are more aware of the value of mint collectables.
Afterall, how many people here regret offloading the odd game or two that now fetch a decent price on eBay?

But they never fetch the full RRP you paid for them. I've been selling off my games collection these past months on ebay and it's the GameCube games that seem to hold their value most, but at best at only around 60% of the original price I paid for them. Meanwhile a lot of 360 games fetch abysmal prices.

They advertise in Retro Gamer each month, there are some nice shirts - but pricey I imagine seeing as they are from the UK.
I like the shirt with the Doom weapons
FYI - Pretty much everything on the site is available in guys/girls sizes and styles and as a Tshirt or Hoodie.
