But yes the game looks nice.

I've pre-ordered the special edition from EB for 360. I look forward to flinging that batarang at some punk kids in class.
And yeah, we probably need to have some sort of intervention regarding special editions.

Yep, gonna pre-order this too at EB. Special Edition is listed at $69.95 with a 'trade 2' deal, so I think that's how I'll go. Probably use Silent Hill: Homecoming and MK vs. DC, as they're on the list of games they'll take.

Not generally a fan of SEs, but as far as they go, this one aint bad.
Although that being said, i'm sure the batarang will look infinitely more useless up close.

Visit Arkham Asylum This Friday

Players get an early chance to slip on the cape and cowl of the World’s Greatest Detective this Friday, when the Batman: Arkham Asylum demo drops for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
The Batman: Arkham Asylum demo gives players a taste of the opening scenes from the full game, with Batman and Commissioner Gordon delivering the Joker to the famous loony bin, only to have things go horribly, horribly wrong. Try out the game’s FreeFlow combat system, sneak around using the Invisible Predator mechanic, unlock character bios, and get a glimpse of things to come once the full game hits store shelves on August 26th.
The demo is slated for release on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network on Friday. PC gamers are urged to keep an eye on the official website (http://www.batmanarkhamasylum.com/start) for news on where they can snag their version of the demo.

Demo finishes right before a boss fight. Typically c*** thing to do. But wow. A Batman game that doesnt appear to suck. In fact it might turn out to be kickarse. Am I dreaming?
The final room of the demo is definitely the highlight and really shows how well the stealth is implemented. Simple yet satisfying. The takedowns are great.
And Batman isnt Superman. Get in a shoot out and you will die. But they'll never see you coming ...... KAPOW!!!
Graphics are nice. Though if your in SD like me there's quite a bit of alaising. I can't imagine it's an issue in HD.
Any word on how this game runs on the PS3 vs XBOX? About the same?

I'd forgotten the demo was coming out this week. Unfortunately it will have to wait until tomorrow. It got a good wrap in the latest OAXM, scoring 9/10 so I'm looking foward to playing it.
The only negatives about the game they noted was that it's relatively short (about 10 hours plus challenge rooms) and there were occassional issues with the context sensitive commands. All up though, the review was quite positive.

Id take any early review scores with a grain of salt. The review embargo will expire soon and then we will see what publications really think. or rather what the ones that didnt strike a cover deal with Eidios really think.
And 10 hours is enough for me. If a game's good you'll play through it a few times. And I hate padding. Give me trim and terrific any day.
Now if it turns out that there's content locked on the disc that's intended as 'downloadable content' .... THEN I'll be unhappy.
Wasnt there some issue like that with Tomb Raider Underworld (the most recent Edios game that I am aware of)?

The demo is amazing. Possibly the best superhero game since Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.
is the demo worth downloading? I heard it's only like 20 mins long
The demo ends with a room where you have to take down five armed goons. You'll play it once, and then you'll think 'what if I did this' or 'what if I did that', so you complete the room, choose 'Restart Checkpoint' before the demo ends, and try it again. And again, and again and again until you find you've been playing it for an hour.
So in that regard, hell yes it's worth a download.
On that note, I love how the 'fear' mechanic in this game is a reward for playing well, not just a tacked-on gimmick (ie. Batman Begins). Brutally taking out goons is fun in it's own way, but playing with them, messing with their heads, TOYING WITH THEM PSYCHOLOGICALLY... that's un-****ing-beatable. I'm glad I pre-ordered this one.
I hope that later in the game you can use the Batarang to break things or bust boilers to increase the fear or lure the goons to certain places.
I loved taking out someone then grappling back up into the rooftops before anyone realised what was going on.
Yeah, that's awesome. Silent drop, silent takedown, back up to the gargoyle... you really feel like Batman, and that's the most important element in a game like this.
What's even better is when the other guys find the unconscious one. "Spread out and find him!" Yes, spread out, spread out far enough so that you can't see each other... and then I strike again!
About to play it now. Took ages to download from the PSN. Time to put the mask on... :)

Also, how great are the character bios? For someone like me who's never read the comics and doesn't know the backstory to Oracle or Zsasz (sp?), they're utterly fascinating.
That said, I found it funny to read that the Joker shot Oracle in the spine, because it reminded me of that thing from the Simpsons. "Well, it could have been a real ugly situation, but I managed to shoot her in the spine. Yeah, the next criminal hideout she tries to break into better have a ramp!" Done in a Joker-ish voice, it's pretty hilarious.

Demo was a lot of fun, the fight mechanic reminds me a lot of Assassins Creed with attack and counters which is a good thing to me. The end of the demo using the gargoyles to stay hidden and taking out the bad guys was great, I like that you get to play both play styles in the demo action and stealth.

Demo was a blast, although very short. I was more into the stealth mode rather than fists flying. Of course all the inmates had guns so the direct approach is suicidal :p
Things I liked:
- Vertical takedowns, didn't notice I could do it until a guard got directly underneath me.
- Detective mode is awesome, I like how you get to see their status & bone structure as well as being able to see through to floors & walls, just like TDK
- Freeflowing movement making it look like EA's Fight Night game with slow-mo punches and unclumsy combat, punches always seem to connect properly
- Being stealthy without sucking at it aka Splinter Cell/MGS
Things I didn't like:
- The graphics are pretty blocky upon closer inspection, must be running at 720p. Certainly not smooth like Heavenly Sword
- Non-destructive environments, was hoping to be able to smash/crack glass, pick up desks & chairs etc
- Demo is too short, was expecting to at least fight the first boss

In the demo, I love the approach the stealth the game takes - it is more Metal Gear than Splinter Cell. Rather than a tight defined path, with one or two ways to approach it (damn I hate that Sam Fisher shit), it's a big open room, with lots of ways to do things, and it is awesome and not frustrating. I love it!

Got it this morning. Thus far it's living up to the hype. Captures the feeling of being Batman very well.
So far it feels very linear, although they've done a good job in creating the illusion that it's not since you can revisit areas at any time, and it's very, very easy to become distracted and spend ages looking for secrets. There is a ridiculous amount of bonus content to find. All in all there are 240 Riddler Challenges, which range from dispatching a certain number of enemies, to finding trophies, solving puzzles and locating hidden items. There is truly a Metroid level of extras to find, the majority of them rewarding (getting hidden tapes of interviews with baddies, or trophies of characters), and I can't wait to find them all.
Combat feels great, it's extremely rewarding to find new ways to chain together combos, even moreso when you realise that you're earning experience to new gadget/suit upgrades.
Can't really say anything that hasn't been touched on in reviews already, except to say that if you're on the fence? It's worth it. And if you're getting it next week? Well, you're gonna have a good week.

Yes way! Metal batarang would have been expensive.
Btw, PC version of Batman Arkham Asylum is only $55.98 posted from gameshop-australia (http://myworld.ebay.com.au/gameshop-australia/)
My PC graphics card is only an ATI 4670 though so would that mean no PhysX stuff for me?
If you had a Quadcore running at 3333MHz with ATI 4670 and 4GB RAM would you get the PC version of Batman and save $20 or would you get the Xbox 360 version for the Achievement Points?
Minimum
o CPU: Intel single core 3 Ghz or AMD equivalent
o Memory: XP = 1 GB, Vista = 2GB
o GPU: Shader Model 3 NVidia 6600 or ATI 1300 or higher
Recommended
o CPU: Pentium D 3Ghz or AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (Dual core)
o Memory: XP = 2GB, Vista = 3GB
o GPU: NVidia 7900 GT or higher

Yeah but I have an ATI card so prob. no PhysX for me, although I may be able to run the game in higher resolution than 720p.
"With PhysX technology enabled, players can explore darkened corridors packed with volumetric fog which reacts to Batman's movement and cobwebs which tear with his passing. Combat becomes a maelstrom of motion as office papers are thrown into the air alongside soda cans and litter as Batman lands each punch upon The Joker's henchmen. Throughout the game, the decaying gothic architecture is realized to an incredible detail with wall tiles chipping and breaking, stone pillars crumbling upon impact, and particles from breaking glass and debris shattering and falling down around Batman's feet."

Finished it 15 minutes ago. Great game. Still have 3 Riddler puzzles to solve. Final boss fight was crazy.
For the achievement whores out there...
Right when you get to the end of the game, there will be a group of 16 enemies in a hallway. You'll know you're at the end because the story makes it pretty obvious. Anyway, just before the final battle there's a hallway with 16 dudes. It's very challenging to take them down, and fighting them is optional. If you choose NOT to fight them, they won't be there when you finish the game and you'll need to do a whole second playthrough to get the achievement for beating them.
Learned that the hard way. Also! Once you've completed the game you're free to explore the island as much as you want and find/solve the remaining Riddler Challenges. But yeah, besides that one achievement I'm pretty sure nothing else is "one time only."

I managed to go through the whole game without really mastering the combat, or being aware of all of Batman's potential takedowns, and then I got to the challenge maps and realised I didn't know shit about the combo system, or Batman's more inventive takedowns. I had a very quick go using the Joker but thought I would hold-off until the main game has been completed before I start on the challenge maps.
A good idea. The Batman you take into the challenge maps is the exact same as the Batman you have in the single player. So, if you don't have all your armor and combat upgrades yet, you're at a significant disadvantage.
Also, when you finish the main game you unlock an awesome new skin for Batman that you can use during the challenge maps. I want Rocksteady to make a sequel just so I can see Batman go through a whole game in that skin.
Anyone looking to do a second playthrough of the main adventure should really check out the Silent Predator maps too. They reveal a good many takedowns that I didn't know were even possible, and are an absolute joy to set up and execute. KOing 3 guys from one Batclaw grapple that drags them all over the edge of a railing simultaneously is possibly the most badass I've felt in a videogame since the first time I 100%'d a solo in Rock Band.

I don't pay much attention to GG's scores anyway. I think the reviews are really good, but the scores are stupid, particularly Bajo's. Seriously, he said GI Joe had no redeeming features whatsoever and gave it 3/10. He said the Harry Potter game was not fun to play, but still gave it 5.5, which is a higher score than he gave Wii Sports Resort (which I'm sure he said was fun for a short while).

I'd never make a purchase based on a good game review but boy do i love the show. Anyone got em on their friends list?

The only game they've ever 'sold me' on was COD4, but really that was just because it was the first review I saw of the game.
Also no I don't know of anyone on their friends list but I did pick up this from last night's review of Shadow Complex...

Junglist is a bit better in this regard, but stil not perfect.
But who cares what the scores they give are if the reviews are actually good?

GAME has a preorder deal, trade 1 game from their eligible list and get the game for 39.95. My mate is gonna trade MK vs DC which he got from cdwow for 30bucks for 50bucks trade in.

Obviously, I'll try not to spoil anything, but the game is quite impressive after a couple of hours with it. There looks to be heaps of collectibles and the main areas seem like they are quite open (i.e. you can come back later to look for secrets etc.).
I find the camera to be a little bit too close to Batman, to be honest, but there may well be some option I just haven't found yet. Overall, it has a sheen of polish that I'd liken to titles such as The Darkness, BioShock and the Riddick games - good script, good pacing, and a cool feeling of predatorial power.

I'm just saying the scores should match the reviews more closely. Like I said, I love the reviews themselves, but the scores usually seem totally random when they should be a reflection of the review itself.

I'm looking at buying the Asian copy from Play-Asia.
I haven't bought Asian before though and I'm a little worried, is there any differences to the Australian? Is it all in English?

Nope. The game doesn't come in a giant batcase for starters, the disc is housed in a digicase that doesn't have room for the manual and that therapist log isn't leather-bound either. Sad.
EDIT!
Also, I'm playing this on Hard. I've died on the first fight twice. =p

Do not get the collectors edition. The Batarang is scratched to high hell.
The packaging is not as awesome as the US edition.
ALSO you don't get the leather packaging for the journal. I say again - DO NOT BUY THE COLLECTORS
I just got it now - managed to score a T-shirt, a challenge map (code or something) and a comic book. On top of the collector's edition game.

I love the combat system. Incredibly simple, but also totally badass. I was one attack off a 20x combo in one fight, but mistimed a counter right at the end. :(
Also, without spoiling anything, the 'Scarecrow' moments near the start are fantastic.

So hard mode really doesn't f--- around, they remove all your combat indicators and you just have to rely on instinct and knowledge of the animations alone. Plus the usual take more damage / do less damage thing. Reminds me a lot of Viewtiful Joe.

They get a massive case it all comes in, and the journal is much much sexier.
Unless there are 2 different types of CE I don't know about?

See if we got the same CE as the US I'd probably have bought it. The Batarang clearly should have been some form of metal/aluminium.

No standard case. It's a crappy brown thing that houses both discs.
Also its a pretty small comic. Not a standard size comic- its probably around half the size of an A4 piece of paper, about 7-8 pages also.
The only positive thing is that I got two codes for challenge maps and a free t-shirt
