View Full Version : Splinter Cell: Conviction (Q1 2010)
I'm suprised there hasn't been a thread made about this. It was my favourite game on show at E3 and my most anticipated game of 2009....but it's delayed until the beginning of 2010, somewhere between January and March according to Ubisoft.
If they can make Sam Fisher return to form then I'll be more than happy to wait. The early footage was nothing short of exceptional.
Expectations people?

It's a shame that it's been delayed to next year as it looks great.
It would've gotten better reception as a christmas release rather than a Q1 release that'll get over looked for the rest of the year.
But if it means more polish and an all round better game then so be it.

So SC:C, Mass Effect 2 and Bayonetta all lumped together? **** that.
I hope predicaments like this force MS to space releases out a bit over the WHOLE YEAR and not just lump all the good shit in around Christmas.

Thankfully the new co-op looks awesome.

I prefered the idea of going in a more primitive direction for stealthing it up, Double Agent was a seriously crap game and this change got me excited about Splinter Cell again. It was a dangerous move from a huge Publisher. Then they had to go and rework everything, saying "Splinter Cell is about the tech and gadgets". Poor. Thankfully, it looks as if it'll remain a decent game either way.

I think it was more they went and reworked everything because neckbeards all over the world were complaining that "WHAT ARE YOU DOING SPLINTER CELL IS ABOUT THE TECH AND GADGETS" and, well, it went from there.
I kinda did prefer how the game looked before too.

Anyone downloaded the demo?
Had a crack of it yesterday and I really enjoyed my time with it. There were a couple of different ways to enter the premises and a couple of different ways to complete the objective.
The auto execute mechanic seemed pretty cool but I can see it getting old for some reason.
At the end of the demo, I was still left wanting more so that can only be a good thing.

As a long time splinter cell fan, I'm not quite sure how I feel about the mark and execute feature. It really changes the pace of the encouters. In the demo it seems really set out to do a hand to hand take down and then use the mark and execute to take out the remaining guards. I've always been the splinter cell player that tries to solve encounters with out using a gun. I really hope that style of play is still viable in this game.

I loved it.
It is short, but goddamn a demo has never gotten me more psyched for a game! It was just awesome, from the fantastic presentation and graphics to the music and the combat. Everything fit in perfectly. I was worried the execute moves would become too easy and ruin the game but they are a fantastic addition.
Essentially the way the work is that before you can use one you have to kill someone using hand-to-hand combat, which involves walking up too them (usually sneaking) and pressing 'B'. This takes them down in a cool execution move and then allows you to target guards by pressing 'RB' when your crosshair is over them. Then when you have a clean line of sight on them you press 'Y' and automatically head shot them.
You still have complete control over general shooting and they don't become cheap because you can't always use them, you have to work towards it before you gain them. It's a very cool idea and works very, very well in the demo.
The interrogation scene at the beginning is visceral, violent and oh-so satisfying. Beating a guy's head through bathroom sinks, mirrors and walls before snapping his neck is brilliant.
Basically the demo set's us up for the real game. It does it's job, which is to make me want to buy the full title. April can't come fast enough!

The IGN review described this game as Splinter Cell by name only, with Sam Fisher now more like Jack Bauer. Having accepted this Splinter Cell will be different, this actually sounds cool. Also playing on realistic should ensure that you think about what you are doing in each encounter. Throw in excellent Co-op and you have an enticing package. Although I'll likely be finishing off what I already have before I get this.

Yeah I know. All reports are saying the co-op is better than the single player though. Hopefully there's a bit of longevity to it or it might be a quick-trade game.
One thing I can't work out from reviews is if there's any other multiplayer. Co-op campaign and extra co-op missions, but does anyone know if there's any other sort of multi?
AranchineD
14-04-2010, 05:25 PM
Doesn't seem like it.
According to co-op game director Patrick Redding, the stealth in Splinter Cell: Conviction is designed around the new core elements like "Mark and Execute" and "Last Known Position" that have been shown since E3 2009. These things are designed for players to fool and defeat A.I. opponents but not human opponents.
Creedy

According to his pixelhunt review posted above, Gameboffin says there are 4 multiplayer modes (not including the four long co-op missions), but they are only for 2 players.
Anyway, this looks pretty good. The mark and execute feature is the thing that worries me the most, seems like a bit of a cop out. I mean, I actually like to do the shooting myself, y'know?
EDIT: and I think you've got the co-op a little wrong Cubey... iirc you cant do the single player missions in co-op, there are 4 co-op missions and thats it, but they are very long (close to the length of the sp campaign).
McChimp
15-04-2010, 11:12 AM
I don't know why people are knocking the M & E feature. I used it quite often in the demo and I've got to say I like it, as I've wanted a few fresher, more action-based techniques in Splinter Cell games for a while. Going from the demo I'd say this is a good evolution for the SC series, as it's been basically the same thing for what, 4 games now? Add the fact that they're hardly re-inventing the wheel and I can't see why a few new mechanics should really bother anyone.
AranchineD
15-04-2010, 11:14 AM
And that's considering you don't have to use M&E at all if you don't want anyway.
McChimp
15-04-2010, 11:17 AM
Exactly. It doesn't seem like the game hinges on the new elements. Admittedly it's a bit more action-based, but yeah, at least there's some flexibility with the play-style.

I thought there was a whole co-op campaign and then more co-op missions separate? This game is just way too confusing. Guess I'll just wait til I play it ;)

This is quite a curious game - the graphics are disappointing and the mechanics are a bit irritating sometimes, but it has a lot of really awesome moments. My favourite bit so far involved pre-marking three guys for execution, before leaping over a counter, hand-to-hand killing one dude to activate an execution, and then proceeding to kill the other three guys in one swift movement. They got a few shots off, but I survived it.
The Iraq level is dumb, though. Dumb as hell.
Iraq mission should never have been included. This is the worst Splinter Cell game in the series, very disappointing so far.

I'm about to start this up, thinking of playing it on Realistic for the challenge, seeing as it's a 5 or so hour game. Having not played many other SC games, will it punish me?
This isn't really a Splinter Cell game so it won't matter. You should be able to get through Realistic just as quickly as anyone else.

Definitely play realistic. It's a very good level of challenge without getting ridiculous.
Finished this (or at least the single player campaign) today. Still trying to sort out exactly how I felt about it (there's plenty I miss from the old games), but speaking generally I enjoyed it. I liked...all the other games more though, I think (including the brilliant Xbox version of Double Agent, which nobody played but me, it seems). Maybe the first and Pandora Tomorrow would have aged to the point where this one is better by now, though.

I'm trying so damn hard to be stealthy in this game, but I end up just getting spotted and blasting my way out of situations. A shame really, as the first few missions were great fun to hide and get the drop on people.
I'm up to the EMP part by the way.
I wasn't exactly timing myself, but I'd estimate maybe 6 hours all up? Maybe even less, it felt very short.
I'm up as far as the mission where you need to infiltrate Third Echelon. That's probably only three hours in. I have a horrible feeling the ending will come a lot sooner than I want it to.
So far, there are some decent missions broken up by pure bullshit (ie. Iraq and Chase). It's not a terrible game but it's so far behind the quality of the rest of the series.
I should be back on Xbox Live next week and I'm hoping the co-op story will be based more around Splinter Cell's routes.

I can see myself not getting any mileage out of this and maybe even 7-day returning it, which I've never actually done. I like it.......I think......but that's the problem. The action elements for some reason don't seem to work well together with the more traditional SC style play. I'm on the borderline of completely disappointed and waiting to see if there's more that'll redeem it.

Hmm it's interesting reading the posts of disapointment here, the IGN review for instance gave the impression that the change in gameplay style is exactly what the series needed, a breath of fresh air.
Guess it depends on the extent you felt the traditional Splinter Cell was getting stale.

To be fair, you should all be blaming those f***s who flooded the internet with THIS NEW SPLINTER CELL LOOKS SHIT when the first previews of Conviction came out.
I never understood why they scrapped the original concept. It was looking fantastic.
Finished the campaign on realistic, 5-6 hours tops. It's definitely more Bourne than Fisher (even the music is like something composed by John Powell). The scenario at the end was fairly well done but overall, they changed too much.
If you're unsure about buying this, definitely rent it out first.

I just Finished this on realistic last night. Iv been playing the series since game one and overall i was happy with the single player - i would have preferred a little less 'shoot, duck and cover' and a little more dropping from the ceiling and snapping necks in the dark. but i found it compelling enough to complete it in 3 sessions.
Things i missed - being able to whistle to attract attention and the ability to save at anypoint...when will designers learn to put a checkpoint AFTER a cut scene. i had to watch the 'i used to work here' third echelon cut scene, then slow walk across the lobby three times to get it right.
Im really looking forward to getting into the co-op play. which was one of my favorite features of Chaos theory.
