If I weren't posting from iPhone I'd track down a link to the developer-commentaried gameplay video of Just Cause 2, which was freakin' astonishing.

If the game delivers on it's promise then surely there's GOTY material there. I wish I had any idea when it's meant to be released!

I really enjoyed Just Cause. I reckon I had more fun with it than GTA. I'm really looking forward to the sequel after watching that developer diary.

Hopefully the series will now get the recognition it deserves.

I wanted to buy Just Cause for 360 today from EB's "3 for 2" sale but I couldn't find 2 other games I wanted...

Interestingly, US IGN panned the original game and EU IGN lauded it.

I've borrowed a copy of Just Cause. On playing just a few minutes of it (the first mission to a prison) I can see that a well developed version of this concept could utterly kick ass. This is a fun game too but it's in a weird zone... maybe 7.5 / 10 but with some really great elements which make it worth a go.

One of my favourite parts of Just Cause was jacking a copter, flying upward for a few minutes, then jumping out and enjoying the view.

All the ingredients we need for a game to be refused classification.

I thought you first had to roll for Banning Based on Arbitrary Enforcement of Vague Criteria. Then if you failed that, you could make a saving roll of Reclassification Through Totally Minor Change to Game Content or the also popular saving roll of Reclassification Through Resubmitting Exactly the Same Game.

Of course, nothing can protect you from the roll for Post Release Banning via Government Member Interference.

I'm having a lot of trouble getting a handle on the grappling hook in Just Cause 1, makes me worry that the awesomeness from the developer video may not be possible for human players.

I'm also a bit confused about the safehouses, in that it doesn't seem you can actually go into them. I guess all it is is a point you can teleport to via the PDA when you unlock it.

Haven't grabbed a copter yet.

The reason I never bought Just Cause was because it seemed half-baked. Plenty of cool ideas, not enough substance. And I figured why waste my time with it, when there will be an inevitable sequel that will make for (hopefully) a WHOLE game, rather than bits and pieces.
Fingers are crossed for No.2

You don't go into safehouses. Most of them has ammo refill and health refill points, all of them have a satellite phone which allows you to save, each safehouse you unlock has a different vehicle for the area. Safehouse at the top of a mountain? Chopper up dere.

The first Just Cause was ludicrous amounts of fun. It's the pinnacle towards the answer of "Why'd you do that?". then you pull your shades off all cool like and answer "Just 'Cause,"

Sequel looks to make the pinnacle even more pinnaclearear.

Demos out on PSN and XBL.

I've been playing the 360 demo over lunch and wow.

This is a true sandbox playground. So much to do and even spending ten minutes shooting people from the roof of a mansion was highly enjoyable because of all the ways I could go about my business. Lobbing grenades from the roof, stealing a chopper and sending it crashing into my enemies, grappling from tree to tree to get behind enemies, tying enemies to tree tops, tying enemies to each other, trying enemies to gas cannisters, shooting the cannisters and watching the solider fly into the afternoon sky until he is just a blip... and this was all before I started playing properly with vehicles.

Leaping off an exploding water tower to grapple to the roof of a passing car then grappling my pursuers to the petrol pumps of a nearby service station. KABOOM!

This is a really generous demo too. It is time locked to 30 minutes but you are given a massive expanse to mess about in and plenty to blow up as well as missions to unlock and black market items to buy.

My only complains is that Rico now looks like generic Hispanic thug #3 rather than the Banderas-esque gun toting Latin Lothario of the first game. :(

My first play of the demo didn't really click with me, for some reason. However, I thought it was pretty cool seeing a pretty massive mountain, thinking 'I might climb that' and being able to do exactly that.

Gotta say, I'm a little underwhelmed. I was getting so hyped for this, and I suppose it delivers, but it just doesn't feel as fun to play as the trailers made it look. I think it's the physics, they feel really outdated, something about it just feels clunky.

Time locked demo's have been a common thing for a long time, way back on the old demo discs from Official Playstation Mag.

That shit pissed me off, some demo's you couldn't even play because the intro was terribly long

(Cause I can't use my 360 and PC at the same time, both use VGA).

aubergine

(Cause I can't use my 360 and PC at the same time, both use VGA).

I cannot recommend highly enough getting an HDMI to DVI cable (I think $15 from Umart online) if you are gifted with an HDMI enabled 360, although the difficult part is then getting audio out, which may require you to buy Microsoft's overpriced HDMI cable kit for it's adapator. Not sure if there is a third party adaptor available, although rumour has it you can cut up your existing AV cable plug to fit alongside the HDMI plug.

I simply switch between PC and 360 with the press of a button (and flick of an audio switcher I guess.)

Had a sesh with the demo, in the half hour managed to go up the highest mountain on one edge of the map then travel via parachute and automobile to the bit of river on the other side.

Two main impressions: the environment/graphics engine is spectacular, a new Elder Scrolls game built in this would astonish.
The downsides are that, like the first game, I don't really know or care why I'm there, what I'm doing or who I am. And for baffling reasons they've changed Justin Cause's character model from attractive to some ugly guy.

Unless there are story bits in the full release, this looks like it might be the biggest Assasin's Creed Flag-Hunt ever made, except you shoot the flags instead of jumping on them. The engine looks to be astonishing and I could enjoy this style of play, but the demo doesn't make me want the game, or even the
demo.

See I would have thought otherwise, because I tried it with a controller and just can't get shit to work. It needs a more solid zoom/iron sights view and it needs be ****ing mapped to left trigger, not R3. But hey, I'm a self-confessed retard when it comes to shooter controls that require any semblence of speed.

I also think that the explosively-launching parachute that magically reappears in his backpack after you detach mid-flight and watch it blow off into the wind is ridiculous.

That is the issue, I am not blessed with a HDMI 360. I have an old model that simply refuses to die. The cheaper option is just to buy another widescreen HD monitor unless I get a VGA to HDMI converter thing >.> I can dual monitor my PC too then at least.

The downsides are that, like the first game, I don't really know or care why I'm there, what I'm doing or who I am.

I'm getting the same feeling. All very cool and all but... yeah... take THAT country! Yeah... I'm destroying the only thing that makes your country valuable (Unless Oil gets involved somehow). Story in JC1 was super duper shallow, half the time I didn't know I was doing a plotline mission.

Has anyone ever made an affordable VGA switching box?

I used a cheap stereo/Av switcher as a component cable switcher (it's just 3 RCA plugs either way) and at worst you could ( this is convoluted but possible) have three VGA to Component cables and a switching box to use both devices via VGA.

McChimp

Been playing the demo, and it's fun. BUT, it feels like it could be a LOT tighter in the controls and at least have a cover mechanic, rather than just having to be out in the open getting the crap shot out of me. Fun, but I can't see it being an essential purchase as I'm questioning it's potential longevity.

It also requires a very meaty PC is you want to have it looking noticeably better than the console versions, which feel much nicer to play anyway.

And I'm saying this even when my console experience was gimped because the game couldn't rectify an Asian button setup.

This.

The game world really stood out to me in the first game as looking quite specy, as it does in this one also. I found playing through the demo a little chaotic though. Just going to a location on the map, blowing something up then being swamped by enemies. The sandbox elements are definitely fun, but it needs something to tie it all together, which wasn't evident from the demo. I suspect playing through the full game would be a different experience.

Found this excerpt from Destructiod and found it funny and interesting. Just Cause 2's demo has been downloaded 2 million times.

the 30-minute demo for the game has reached 2 million downloads. No kidding. It's easily one of the better demos in recent memory.

A nice accomplishment by Avalanche Studios, no question, but where's the crazy. Oh, here it is:

"Players have driven a distance equivalent to a trip from the earth to the moon and back four times; Panau Island has lost almost 30 million of its population (with approximately 2.5 million headshots, almost a million drivers hurled from hijacked vehicles and 27,000 Piņata kills); and players have base jumped the equivalent of a freefall through the Earth's core, pole-to-pole, twice."

Full thing's here:

It really reminds me of the first mercenaries game but with a wackier element. Sure the story seems shallow... But who cares!! This game isn't about story progression, it's about giving you some half arsed reason to blow shit up, and it does that brilliantly.

A mix of crackdown and merceneries, which in my mind is a recipe for brilliant fun.

No question about picking it up on release.

Same here (in amongst all the family-visiting and choccie-receiving), this is going to be my one focus. Pumped maybe 2 hours into it last night, spent maybe half of that doing missions, the other half just messing around and wreaking havoc. Fun is the word that exemplifies this game, although I can see it being like Mercs 2, in that I can see it's longevity being an issue due to a lot of repetition and maybe too much freedom (if that's possible). I'm also going with Bajo from GG's review of this in saying that it could've used some form of cover system for battles.

7/10 so far.

Slingshotting around with the parachute is awesome fun, and just exploring and seeing what interesting things I can find is fun too. It's one of those games when you try to go to a specific location, but continually get sidetracked by other stuff along the way. I've already checked out the Lost island and hatch, and found the beached whale too :P

I didn't think this game would be as fun as it is. One of the best things though, is the horrendously atrocious voice acting. Listening to the characters put all the emphasis on the wrong syllables is pretty funny :)

There's enough give when just flicking the analogue stick for a quick turn, so it's like running a gauntlet when going down a winding main road with trees either side. Ninja like reflexes required. Then when I crash I imagine the fat guy in the X-wing from Star Wars screaming as he's engulfed in fire.

At least the main story missions, just get that out of the way and then you don't feel like you're missing anything important when you skip to deux. Granted, there isn't a massive link between the games assides from recurring characters (Which, in its own way, is moderately important); but if you choose to fire up JC2 now, you'll never touch JC1.

And you will hate yourself for it, drawing pentagrams on the ground with wax and spraying vanilla icecream on your arms.

Loving this game so far. HEAPS better than the original I reckon, though the voice acting and dialogue are REALLY starting to piss me off!! At first they were funny, sure, but now they are getting under my skin. I mean the one dude who showed up who could actually act and the protagonist tells him in an dismally performed drawl to "do me a favour and shut the hell up". But he was actually doing a good job!!

It's like watching the worst Saturday morning kids cartoon ever, with ludicrous caricatures for characters and dialogue consisting of a string of non-sensical cliches.

So it's a good thing the actual gameplay is so much fun! ;)Is that PS3 exclusive? That's an awesome feature.Yeah the video capture is PS3 exclusive. Other than uploading direct to YouTube you can also just save the vid (up to 10 mins at a time) to the PS3 hard drive in MP4 format (@360p). And then from there you can just copy it to an external drive etc.

One thing that's particularly awesome is that you can set it to 'auto start' when the action picks up and it will only pause the game to tell you about it when the 10 mins are full. And if that isn't enough, you can also pause the game at any time and save/upload the last 30 seconds of gameplay. :)

Also the PS3 version is v-synched throughout, so there's zero screen tearing.

I mean I'm working for both the Ulars and the Reapers, but can't seem to find where on the map you go to start the 3rd group's missions. It could be that it disappeared when I chose the other two, but it could also still be hiding in the map somewhere.

I ran out of ammo and just had to ride it out. I ended up jumping over to other cars a fair bit and back again to dodge fire. Also, to conserve ammo, try and shoot the front tyres out of cars, it flips and kill all the goons in a vehicle (in spectacular fashion!).

There are a few tactics you can use. I took to just shooting out the front tyre of chasing cars and watched them roll like mad. Or you could just zip to the offending car and take out the gunner at close range.

I bought it yesterday (though not very happy I paid $110 for it at EB, since they wouldn't price match JB), and enjoying it... though I think this'll definitely be one of those rare games i'm going to try and hammer this week so I can be done with it and swap it for something else.

I zipped to the vehicles, planted C4 on em, then zipped away and pressed the explosion button. Had to read the manual first though to figure out how to detonate them. Nothing like zipping half-way, parachuting and then hitting the detonator, then zipping back to your vehicle.

I honestly think it's the kind of game that you're best off taking your time with anyway. I'd probably find the chaos mechanic would get on my nerves if I was just trying to tear through the story. The 'next stronghold' progress status bar in the info panel no longer shows anything. I'm pretty much a full time 'chopper pilot'. There is a lot of satisfaction in 'infinite' rockets to take out as much as you can at a location, land, clean up for 100%, take off. Although if a location has those missile launchers, it pays to land outside the area, make way to missile launcher(s), granade the sucker, get back to chopper, then let loose from up high. If i'm attacked by another chopper and i take too much damage, jump out, grapple attacking chopper, take out occupants, and carry on my merry way.

Pretty much use a chopper for all the 'air race' challenges as well, particularly where you have to fly between buildings. Time gets a bit close sometimes, but the chopper is more manouverable.

My reliance on the chopper may change when the parachute thrusters arrive, along with the awsome sounding 'quadrocketlaunchershotgun'.

I find the military alert level to be comeplete bullshit. There's no difference between level 1 or 5, they're still as much of a pain in the back as they were when you first get their attention; plus it doesn't matter what level you're on for them to call air support which, when it finally flies around, is an annoying piece of time wasting to take out rather than added fun or challenge. Moveover, I can't help but scream at the hint in the load screen for "Dodge, zipline, move about to reduce your enemy's accuracy". Move about my arse, I'm flying through the air on my zip line and the dick with a stockless, bipodless machine gun is getting every single hit into me. Before I know it, level 1 military, just entered base to blow crap up, and I've already lost half health. I'm seriously curious as to whether I accidently went with the Expert difficulty level. The military is now the grind between me and the real fun of blowing shit up.

Remaining undetected while moving through bases would appeal; sneak in, trigger explosive anything red, sneak out and pop it. Unfortunately you can be a kilometre away from what you have explosives on, and for some reason you're still the prime suspect once you blow up the thousandth fuel depot in a row. Then the level 1 alert, superman marksmen machinegunners, and the immediate AIR SUPPORT, RAWR call. etc. etc. I have no idea why I'm still playing it.*

When not 'playing' the game I've been driving vehicles from extreme hieghts to watch them fall (instead of base jumping).

Favourite spots have been - a big mountain (just zoom in on the map at the north or south to find the higest elevation, you can see the '3D' topography)

South east on the map, bottom right corner of the brown/desert major land mass - next to a point mentioned in the map co-ordinates. Been driving off the side of the cliff, vehicles tethered together and watching them swing wildly around each other. The tank survives the best, but the fast car is more fun.
-There is small village here so you can extract straight back to it, and a small base below one side of the cliff, ocean on the other side.

Even tried standing on the roof as the car flies through the air and firing a rocket launcher at the other car. You get some insane spinning rotations as the speed goes up when careening down a steep cliff.
>If you bail out at the right time (when the car is spinning around, doing about 5 rotations per second) you can get some crazy rag-dolling down the cliffs as well, and usually survive as its counted as "falling".

The flying blimp - driving off the top into a great freefall until your vehicle hits the soup. The only thing that can 'survive' is the jet boat.
>It also slides down cliff sides pretty well too.

The skyscraper casino (mentioned in the map) - driving off and falling into the waterfall side, good fun.
