It looks like Scratch: The Ultimate DJ is getting back on track with a new developer (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/06/scratch-the-ultimate-djs-development-turned-to-new-studio/), a slightly different art direction and an "early 2010" release date for Xbox 360 and PS3. Apparently agreements have already been made with Kanye West, Run DMC and Outkast about the music licensing, so expect some songs from then. The previous track list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scratch:_The_Ultimate_DJ#Set_List) had already included a much more hip-hop oriented list than DJ Hero's mashup-focussed lineup so hopefully they won't be moving away from that.

Anyway, here's a shot of the licensed Numark DJ controller deck (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/27/scratch-the-ultimate-dj-shows-off-its-ultimate-deck/) and a video showing how it works (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/13/video-scratch-the-ultimate-dj-shows-off-their-deck-new-websit/).

I like how the controller is designed in this, at least compared to DJ Hero. I get the impression that the scratching is a bit more authentic too, but haven't really seen any good demos. All the gameplay footage I've seen is of the game itself, and all they ever do is baby scratches.

Read some impressions from a demo a month or two ago, apparently the MPC buttons aren't really that good, and the game plays like a boring version of Beatmania. DJ Hero is apparently better, which kinda sucks because I just think that game looks strange. Maybe this will all change, but I'm still gonna pass. If they really do one of these games properly, it could function like a real MPC + digital turntable. It would not be hard to do at all. Making something along the lines of other Bemani games is doing it wrong imo.
