Sooo, the hype train has really been behind this flick since about Comic-con. Produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Neil Blomkamp (the team who were going to bring Halo to film) District 9 seems to be a larger scale version of one of Blomkamp's earlier short films Alive in Joberg, which is pretty freaking awesome. (see below) The film revolves around aliens who arrive in South Africa (some 20-odd years prior to events of the film) and are confined to the slums.

I really can't wait to see it, i've been avoiding reviews but it's being really well recieved. Plus it's Peter Jackson. So y'know, as a fellow kiwi it would be like, illegal for me not to see it, right?

Cool short video, easy to see what Jackson sees in this guy.

A big bag of money?

Of anyone in the world, Jackson does NOT have to do anything for money.

I liked it but the ET cameo near the almost ruined it.

Saw it without even checking a review, went in totally blind (not drunk :p) and was blown away.

If only Hollywood would start handing out more money to people with creative and original ideas.

Yeah cannot recommend it enough! Myself & Shorty saw it on day 1, blew us both away. Seen it again since then, still awesome.

Well not a whole lot of detail in this thread other than, it's amazing and go see you limey bastards.

Well I'm not the man to change that.

So I saw it last night and it was really impressive, creative, original and the special effects were amazing too.

An incredable achievement. GO SEE IT YOU LIMEY BASTARDS.

apart from the usual 'it was amazing' i thought the lead actor deserved some credit seeing as it was his first acting role and he did an awesome job. and can't believe they made it with only $30 million...

Saw it for a second time last Friday night. It's still excellent.

Saw District 9 last night. I came out really wanting a live action Robotech movie with awesome CG effects, spaghetti missiles and all.

Good movie, although the hype machine kind of killed it a little for me. It would have been really good going in to the movie fresh, without knowing what to expect.

Loved it, but by the 10th heart-wrenching-beatdown-while-help-is-on-the-way scene, it got a little silly. Still, you can totally see how this became the halo movie, and not in a bad way.

A couple of my mates saw this on Saturday, don't know why they didn't invite me.
They said it was pretty bad, but you can't really trust someone who began the sentence with 'Transformers 2 is the best movie ever' to critique any movie.

Yeah same. The visuals were amazing. Although the US dollar probably goes further in South Africa. 30,000,000.00 USD = 233,526,659.04 ZAR.

Interestingly, that guy is in the 'Alive in Joberg' original... so technically not his first acting role :P

In all seriousness though, his character alone did a hell of lot for the movie. He was the kind of normal, kind guy who you felt completely compassionate for. Without him it would've been very different.

I don't know, the abortion scene made him look like a bit of a jerk.

Brilliant. The last movie I remember turning sci-fi on its head like this was Minority Report.

I also don't understand the reports of people walking out. The way the film is established is very innovative.

It was a little over hyped for me. I was waiting for a big revelation in the end but what I got felt pretty out of place in the movie. The Murray factor was also a tad weird.

Just caught this the other day. Pretty good flick. Loved seeing how Wikus deteriorated throughout the movie. I thought last third or so of it got a bit ridiculous, but I guess it is a Sci-Fi.
