View Full Version : Achievement Millstones

Just looking at the other thread and my head got to turning; what achievements have seen you grind away at a game fruitlessly for hours on end, or are there any that you achieved only thanks to the skill of 'perverse repitition'?

I do remember putting on a movie while I left the 360 on and tapped the same button over and over to get to 100% completion in Bully (drinking sodas was all that was left).

I also remember starting a second character on NBA Homecourt with the plans of getting the Seeing Double achievement. After about two hours I realised I had no real desire to see it through and gave up a long way from the end point.

So, any of those achievements weighing you down?

Does this really differ enough to warrant a new thread?

Yeah, we all need a place to show off our e-peen every now and then.

So... what's your most prized achievement? Hardest to unlock? Latest accomplishement?

Other one was about showing off accomplishments. I'm interested in hearing about the ones that make you cringe and die a little inside.

Edit: But, you know, only if you contribute...

General rule of thumb, your most prized achievement will be one that you've worked really hard for. So it's essentially the same topic...

Jesus, dude. Read it. I didn't say anything about prized achievements or working hard. In fact, I specifically asked for 'fruitless' endeavours, or those that required no skill bar an embarrassing amount of time.

So, you know, basically the opposite of the other thread where people were celebrating those gloriously happy achievement milestones.

Lips gives you achievement points just for looking at menu screens, I kid you not.

The only game I've 100%ed is Pacman Championship Edition. I tried to get many single player achievements for Half Life 2 but found it difficult and gave up.

Again, it was finishing Through The Fire And Flames on expert in Guitar Hero 3. I did that damn song over and over again for about 2 weeks until I just about wanted to smash the TV.

I got about half of the achievements in Team Fortress 2 for Orange Box on 360.

Anyone who knows my internet situation knows there's something very wrong with me doing that.

I have to say that I felt pretty dirty knocking over 1000/1000 for Lost. Most of it came from just playing along but I did bother to do some research into one particular achievement (which ended up being more wasted time with the damn game).

Here's a question- have people ever/often found themselves playing a game simply for the lure of more achievements (Avatar probably doesn't apply here)? I can remember that I kept plugging away at Sega Rally for days despite the fact that I was utterly and entirely over the game (for little reward in the end).

Oh, and I bothered to sit through the tutorials of GH:M the other day for no good reason other than the 5pts. I think I tried to convince myself it was to see whether or not the Lips microphones worked with the game (err...they do).

Edit: Aran, that's nuts. Actually, the Hardcore achievement (1000 kills on TF2) was another one that I got very sick of towards the end. In fact, I don't even remember getting the achievement because I apparently did it after a big night out. I was pleased to see it gone from my life the next day.

At some stage we should organize a game so that we all get the "play with seven people on your friend list" achievement. :p

19-08-2009, 11:04 AM
Actually, I felt a bit stupid getting that one as well. I think I was with five people from my friend list and I sent out requests to the other two players on my team. Only one accepted at first, but after some subtle begging (come on...) the other guy called me a nerd and relented.

You would think that getting called a nerd by a twelve year old, acne-ridden fatso on the other side of the world would make me re-assess my life.

I find it interesting that people are often pretty quick to admit that chasing an achievement can at times be a largely negative experience, but continue to do so anyway.

I was itching to visit the casino on Saints Row 2 the other day, and finally canvinced my bro to come along. I wanted more money! They only had video poker and blackjack, we played for a bit, lost heaps of cash, till my bro looked up a 5G achievement (I'm Not Addicted!) for gambling a total of 500,000 bucks. Max you could spend on a hand was 500 on Blackjack, 1000 on poker.

So we stayed there for half an hour, mashing A. Started with 170,000, ended up with 50,000 or so when it popped. But I just loaded my game!

That was a worthwhile half hour of my life. My bro likes to get every achievement, he has 100% on 17 games. I have none yet...

I've been churning through Guitar Hero: Metallica, looking for the 'Seek and Destroy' achievement for playing 20 online matches. I must seriously be up to about 40 and have yet to hear it pop. Apparently it's a glitched achievement and some unlucky bastards (such as myself) just have to keep going until we get lucky.

Bummer, yo.

Orbs in crackdown were a killer. I printed out maps and all sorts but couldn't figure out where the last one was and just gave up, one orb short.

In Bioshock I was trying to get all the audio logs in a playthrough and I realised about 3/4 of the way through that I'd missed one that you couldn't go back to.

Final Fantasy XI. Goddammit.

Level 75 Red Mage (30G) took approximately 900 of playtime to obtain. Level 100 Alchemist (50G) took another 400 hours on top of that.

I wasn't playing for the achievements because, quite frankly, I don't have a spare 12,000 hours to unlock them all. Still, just having them present in the game was a mental millstone... something that just sat there and teased me.

Crackdown's orb collection drove me loopy. I managed to find the last agility one by chance when I was playing co-op online. The hidden orbs were a lot harder. I was just about to give up after searching high and low for the last one, and when I was reaching for the power button I saw it on a cliff above a freeway way off in the distance. Pretty lucky.

I've done the EZI (321G) achievement in Eternal Sonata twice now (once in the English version, once in the Japanese version). It requires two successive playthroughs of the game whilst collecting absolutely everything, completing a ridiculously hard endgame dungeon, and interacting with NPC's all over the world playing music with them for trinkets. Loved the game, but that was a really goddamn frustrating achievement.

Boom Boom Rocket's 'Sore Thumb Award' eluded me for a very long time. You have to play through five laps of any song in endurance mode on Hard difficulty. The song gets faster with each repeat, to the point where you feel like your thumb is going to drop off. That felt like an actual achievement for me.

Ditto for Meteos Wars 'Mission H' achievement for beating the Mission Mode on Hard. That almost took me to sobbing-mess-on-the-floor breaking point. Kas can attest to that if she's still arround.

Prototype's 'Pt' and 'Revenge Revisited' achievements were a little tricky. The first one makes you go back and do every challenge on Platinum difficulty, and the second makes you completely play through the game again on Hard (with nightmarishly-hard bosses as a result). Those achievements sat there laughing at me, so I decided to man up and tackle them. Got all GS for the game now.

Aaaand... THE IDOLM@STER has an insane achievement called 'True Idolm@ster' where you have to get your producer rank to Level 10. Explaining this would take far too long, but it basically entailed mastering the game to the tiniest detail. It took seven complete playthroughs to finally unlock it.

All I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure others have got equally millstoney achievement horror stories to tell.

Don't have any knightmarish achievements yet though I'm working towards a couple particularly in Star Ocean: The Last Hope and Ghostbusters.

Just knocked over another millstone. 200/200 on Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. :D

Had been missing the last two achievements (200.6% explored and finishing it again as Richter) for two years. It was one of those things I always told myself that I'd get back to eventually, and never did.

Tempting to do it all again in Japanese, but I'm all Metroidvania'd out after finishing Shadow Complex twice, and then this twice. ;)

Okay so I've been getting extremely frustrated playing Naruto the last few nights. A big sum of achievements in this game is for the online fights. You have to win 6 matches in a row to win a tournament and then you get the achievement for that character. You need to do all characters....

And I can't for the life of me win. Furthest I've gotten is the final match. I usually lose out in the second/third though. Soooo frustrating.

So I'm trying to get the Ironman achievements (don't die) in Frontlines: Fuel Of war. Thanks to the fact that after the second level 75% of the enemies are equipped with rocket launchers, the physics in the game are wildly inconsistent, your allies appear to actually be physically incapable of killing enemies, and that the game has one of the worst implementations of auto-aim I've ever seen, not to mention that even if you're surrounded by allies, every single enemy will aim for YOU, I'm finding it stupidly frustrating to get these achievements.

It must be some sort of masochistic tendancy but I love grinding away at achievements.

Some of my tougher ones so far include,

Far Cry 2 - Soldier of Misfortune, Mercenary, Field Hospital
Chromehounds - All the Valor Medals
Command & Conquer 3 - 100 hrs online mp
Dead or Alive 4 - Grade SS
Fear - 1000 MP games
Call of Duty 3 - General (took me 69 days)
GRAW 1 - Host 1000 matches
Catan -1000 VP
Perfect Dark - 1000 Dark op games + 1000 Deathmatch games
The Darkness - Win 250 MP games
Shadowrun - 100 games as each race
Ridge Racer 6 - Win 200 online races

Here's a few I'm currently actively grinding away at (slowly)
The Club - 10,001 kills in ranked MP
Bejeweled 2 - Endless mode reach lvl 280 - has crashed and reset on me twice got to lvl 130 or something like that
Army of Two - Retirement Savings Plan
Far Cry 2 - Warlord - lvl 30
Forza - Earn 1Million online
Lips - Win 20 challenges
Lost Cities - Win 300 online games (has been taken off Marketplace so very hard to find a game)
Saints Row 2 - Kingpin - earn 30 mp badges
Sega Rally - Host 100 races online
Unreal Tournament 3 - Get 200 kills in mp on 50 different days

Plus about 50 others, that i've shelved for the time being, especially the soul destroying level 100 in Gears of War 2

I ended up late for work this morning because I was grinding away at Ticket to Ride.

Two achievements - 25 wins, & play 50 games, both of which I should have gotten at least 20 games ago, must have been glitched and were not popping up.

Occasionally I give them another go, and today it finally decided I was worthy, and they popped up in consecutive games.

I finally just got Rainbow Six Legend. You have to play through the single player story mode at realistic difficulty.

I've tried it three other times but each time it seems when I save the game it was reverting back to normal difficulty.

So this time I did it in one sitting over the last two days, pausing only for sleep, pizza and beer. :)

Sorry to the guys playing GTA the other night I couldn't join in as I couldn't stop my game.

I've had so much trouble with this game, and even on this playthrough encountered at least 6 glitches where rooms would be empty of enemies or the last guy you needed to kill to progress would not spawn.

Anyway it's all over now, I can shut my 360 off and let it cool down, luckily I remembered to install to the hardrive or I'm sure the disc drive would have crapped out at some point.

TF2 is brilliant. How many other games can you imagine yourself playing while inebriated?

I met a guy ages ago who absolutely destroyed everyone at the Puyo games (I think it was Kirby's Ghost Trap on SNES). He was just beyond awesome at setting up huge piles of blobs and chaining them all into one huge combo.

I, meanwhile, have never been able to wrap my head around it. I'm gonna give that one a go soon.
