With Firefox's updates continuously hogging up ram to an average of 128mb+ and hogging up my CPU I'm getting really sick of it to the point where I feel like I need a change. IE is looking more attractive with each update and feels like a smooth ride with enough options and I just discovered Simple Adblock (beta) - for IE only (http://simple-adblock.com/download1/) which is different than other adblockers, this one actually blocks all the ads ON the website itself so you can lookup ign.com.au with absolutely no ads! Instead of seeing an add there'll just be a blank white space where it used to be
Before:
http://simple-adblock.com/abc/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/turn-this.jpg
After:
http://simple-adblock.com/abc/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/into_this.jpg
I've only tried it with a couple of websites and it seems perfect except that you can tell where the ads used to be. Perhaps it varies from site to site or maybe because its still in beta its not working to its full potential. Saves a lot of annoying loading though especially ones that automatically play movies or have banners over the website's banner. When the full version of Simple Adblocker is released it seems as though you'd have to pay for it but considering how less frustrating it would be to browse the internet I'd pay for it (as long as the price isn't crazy).
Google Chrome still seems lacking imo, even though it is fast. I like the almost fullscreen appearance but I miss those handy buttons & menu screens. Safari still seems like a waste of time, I tried it for a while but quickly got sick of it. Opera 10 Release Candidate (http://www.opera.com/browser/next/) is out which claims to have a 40% faster engine and faster browsing for those people on dialup with a few other features - apparently you'll have to pay for this as well once the final version is released (I think?)

I also gave up on Firefox recently. This computer isn't the best and it was really taking over. Seems like the ram usage was double over the course of a couple of updates.
Currently using Opera and lovin' it!

I switched from Firefox to Chrome and apart from the lack of ad-blocker I have no problems. The initial load is much quicker and I like the way I can just pull things apart.
(Also browsing my work intranet is for some reason much much faster on chrome than any other browser)

Also switched to Opera. The memory leaks in Firefox are a major killer. Opera is just so damn stable, and also has a simple ad-blocker.

Might have to check out this Opera. Firefox has become a dog recently, and takes forever to initially load.

Opera owns, been using it for years. I couldn't live without mouse gestures, and the more recent innovations (customisable speed dial, address bar search shortcuts) make browsing or searching for anything incredibly easy.
I didn't mind Firefox at first, but almost every second time I started it up it had an update waiting to be applied. It's like, goddamnit I just wanted to check Facebook!

Now that I've had a bit of time to use the new Opera 10 it does feel a whole lot better than before and I like the new visual overhaul - feels closer to Firefox but without the annoyances. Guess I'll be switching from IE to this now! IE still has some annoying features

I'm trying Opera now, and I found a widget that I can use to download Redtube videos, so it's as useful as FF, I'd have to conclude.

Interesting thread, really. I've noticed Firefox stagnate in terms of initiative lately, which, considering their role as a major industry leader in the past, is disappointing. Both Chrome and IE are boasting page-as-process structure and other similarly impressive innovations, but Firefox's multi-process project probably won't even see beta release this year, and it has me wondering whether a non-profit organization developing an open-source product can keep up with commercial entities developing their browsers as part of bigger schemes.
I'm not having any problems with it, though - my firefox.exe process is actually riding closer to 200MB of allocated memory, but I tend to have 10-20 tabs open at once, and have more than enough RAM. Firefox does practically everything I want out of a browser right now, and I'm keenly watching a number of Mozilla Labs projects.
I've got 3gb DDR2 and it STILL slows my pc down!
I've got 4Gb of DDR2, I'm running Win7, and I can usually download things while playing games and have MSN open at the same time.
Are you running any other programs at the same time?
EDIT:
Also, 200Mb is a very small percentage of 3Gb... ?
yeah, firefox has been shitting me for ages, been trying opera on my PC (RIP) and loving it - is it worth switching my folks over to it? their pc is a piece of crepe. now it just seems firefox is the browser people use to feel like they know something "oh, IE? *snort*"

I'm on the Opera 10 Beta also, sick of Firefox, its memory hogging ways and as of recently, putting giant blinking cursors everywhere on the page where you can't even type.

BTW, can I largely verify that these Firefox complaints are from users/ex-users of version 3.5, and subsequent updates?

I don't see why folks are hating on FF 3.5, I haven't had any issues with it.
Tried Chrome but it's too minimalistic for me, I've got a ton of FF extensions that I like using.
For someone not looking to customise their browser I'd probably recommend Chrome or Opera though.

If Firefox was only taking 200mb of RAM for me I'd probably still be using it. I leave it open a lot though and watch HD flash movies. I always close my tabs out and just leave it open on usual tabs. After about a week I caught it using 1GB of memory. That number is correct, a total of 1GB or 1/4 my system memory.
That's when I said screw it.

Does Opera have a widget similar to BYM (Blank Your Monitor) which inverts black & white and makes it nicer on the eyes when it's close to bed time.

There used to be a lot of wacky style overides there, but they must have been removed at some point. One made everything look like you were using a C64! :D

Nope. I've updated my home & work versions to 3.5.2, and I'm not having issues with any of them.

. . . I always close my tabs out and just leave it open on usual tabs. . . .
In other words the flash tabs would be closed and forums would be left open. In every other browser this seems to, I don't know, reduce the size of the browser after viewing a video. Not so in Firefox!

Bump. Extensions are now supported for Google Chrome. (https://chrome.google.com/extensions)
I stopped using Firefox 3.5 a month or so ago because the video and Flash performance had progressively become woeful. I missed Adblock lots, but now I'm using the superfast and super stylish Chrome with Adblock plus Cricinfo, Google newsreaders and ebay and Facebook update apps.
Despite my concerns for Google's use of my personal data...I love it!

The only reason why I don't like Chrome is because all the options I want are hidden away, I prefer direct links. Aside from that its pretty good & gives you more of a fullscreen

I've just also discovered Google Sidewiki (previously discussed in another thread) and Smooth gestures. Now back or forward is just a flick of the wrist away! Useful when the back/forward buttons on my mouse don't work with Chrome for some reason. ANd Sidewiki seems useful too.

I'm a Firefox user, former Opera user. I actually prefer Opera for most things, but it just wasn't as solid as FF; I'd get a crash or two per week and it performed poorly with Flash content. I've since customised FF to my liking, and plan on sticking with it for the time being.
I almost switched to Chrome, but I just didn't like the way the UI handled bookmarks. Which sucks, because it's quite a speedy browser. In any case, I'm excited for upcoming releases of FF, we should be looking at multicore support and possibly a 64 bit version by the end of the year when 4.0 is out.

As for crashes, the only Opera I've used that was even remotely unstable was the original Mobile 10 beta. Version 2 is great.
