Surprised there's no thread for this (there probably is but I couldn't find it with the search button).
What's the deal with these "Cheater's Lament" hats? Will my mate who joins achievement maps not get one or is it just for hacks?

Basically due to the broken TF2 rewards system, someone made a program that simulates you playing TF2 in an server and doing nothing. So people would run this program while they weren't playing TF2 to collect weapons and hats etc. The joke is that plenty of people (myself included) ran this program and still didn't even get any hats, that's how low the drop rate is.
I had it set to auto delete any duplicate items it got (which was everything since I got no hats), so I lost nothing when they rolled out this change to punish people using the idle program. But I didn't get the halo hat either because I used the program.
So in summary your mate should be fine.

The biggest pro for wearing the halo is that it takes off the helmets of the Engy and Soldier, revealing their chrome domes to the world.
According to this tf2 wiki (http://tf2wiki.net/wiki/Hats) - Every 15,430 seconds (4 hours, 17 minutes, and 10 seconds) you have a 3.5714% chance of receiving a hat.
Ah well, it's the randomness of the rewards that's keeping me playing atm along with all the new content since I played last

Update! Important stuff here:
Alt-fire on the Sandvich now drops sandviches
A single sandvich can be dropped at a time. Dropping the sandvich removes it from the Heavy
A Heavy can regain his sandvich by collecting a healthkit while already being at full health
Eating a sandvich using the taunt method now heals a Heavy to full health
Dropped sandviches heal 50% of the collector's health
Medic regen changes
Base regen amount increased from 1/sec to 3/sec
Regen amount increase since time of last damage decreased from 3x to 2x
End result of above: Old healing scaled from 1/sec to 3/sec based on time since being damaged (maxed out at 10 seconds). New healing scales from 3/sec to 6/sec
Blutsauger
Replaced "No critical hits" negative attribute with "-2 health drained per second on wearer"
Health drain stacks on top of the above Medic regen changes, lowering the base regen by 2h/sec
Time to drop me some sandviches.
Interesting Medic edit, despite Medic being one of the easiest classes to kill already...

I think it's just to make the original syringe gun a viable choice now. I tried it out today and the reduced regen is always present when you have the blutsauger in your current loadout, not just when it is being actively used. So it means you need to be a bit more aggressive to top up your health if you have it on you. If you are primarily healing then the original gun is better now.

Kind of a pointless tactics shakeup for me, as I would never swap out the shotgun for the sandvich, the shotgun just offers more killing power and an increase in the heavies combat mobility which is too important to put aside for healing.
Probably more viable for Arena mode but I play that rarely and usually play scout when I do :P

So what do you do when you have sfa medics on your team? Or they ignore you? The sandvich has gotten me out of a few tough moments and it's also quite good at annoying watchers and slippery.
I really like that the alternate weapons are randomly rewarded now.
I've been having a blast playing as Spy with the Cloak & Dagger. It's great for learning how to find positions (and gain confidence on appropriate times to strike), and observe enemy movements while reporting what they're up to.

Generally I either accept I'm not going be able to be the best heavy I can be and instead focus on locking down territory by staying near important corridors/medpacks (eg. one of the shacks around the central point in Badlands) or I switch classes (either to a medic or something that doesn't need a medic quite so much.)
I just find if I can keep moving and shotgun an enemy down, I've got a far better chance of surviving than if I just have a sandvich.

Oh I agree about the Cloak and Dagger, it's made me enjoy spy much more. That and my hat haha.
I still think the random items need to be given out more frequently. I unlocked all the spy/sniper stuff so much faster when they made them also achievement based.
I've been a bit more spontaneous recently with my classes, too, but I've only really discovered that I'm a much better support guy (Medic, Engie) than anything else. All I really do with the other classes is harrass the other team. I think I like Spy so much for that exact reason, actually...

I bumped into some chaps I knew in a few random games this morning before getting my arse handed to me by some pro Soldier **** (seriously, he had twice as many points as anyone else on his own team which means he wasn't teamed with a Medic or anything :/) and then Steam crashed. The End.

I like Harvest and have been spending the majority of time on it since it was released.
I feel a lot more confident playing as a Spy when the level is symmetrical.

New Demo & Soldier update coming this week. Both classes with get three weapons etc but there is one seventh exclusive weapon which only one of the classes can have. To decide which class gets this weapon the class which gets the most kills against the other class wins.
Interesting but it'll mean we'll see a whole lot more sollys and demos filling up the servers.

the extra weapon valve will give the class that wins wont be something that changes the game, its too important to leave in the hands of the community. my guess is that it will fire rabbits or clowns that dance or something stupid like that.

Well it's just relentless, stickies and grenades everywhere constantly. I'm only human :p Even more painful since I haven't played in a while and my soldier skills have greatly diminished.
I still like the concept, could have worked better with different classes though.

I don't really play TF2 so I'm kind of speaking out of turn, but I was under the impression that Demos were the stronger class.
No, Demos are the cheaper class.
Damage from rocket jumping is just something you expect as a Soldier, but removing that damage is unbalancing the class even more.
Soldiers deal a ridiculous amount of crits due to the small clip size of the rocket launcher, and splash damage nature of the rockets themselves

Update is interesting.
Crafting system isn't bad, it provides more options to get the stuff you want since the crafting reagents can drop as well and you can use duplicate items to build stuff. But I haven't gotten anything since the patch from the random drop system.
Oh got the new rocket launcher, soooo good. You can aim at people rather than aiming at where they might be.

Last week, the Rocket Launcher dished approx. 21% of all damage dealt, and the Soldier was played approx. 13% of the time.
Going by class/primary weapon (%):
Soldier: 13 / 21
Pyro: 11 / 13
Heavy: 7 / 11
Demo: 12.5 / 22.5 (10.5 pipebomb + 12 for stickies)
Scout: 9 / 7.5
Sniper: 12.5 / 9
Spy: 10 / 5
Medic: 10.5 / 1.5
Engie: 14 / 2
The bottom 5 aren't as significant as the rest, as they're all niche classes.
For the most part, the numbers of the 4 main attacking classes are pretty even. They should be earning more damage, as the more damage you inflict the more crits you get (damage + DAMAGE = DAMAGE).
You can see quite clearly that the 2 biggest gaps between class & primary weapon damage are the Soldier & Demo, at 8 and 10 % points respectively. The Heavy only has a gap of 4% points, so is the Heavy underpowered?
I concede your earlier point, Bean, that there are good Soldiers just as there are good players of every class, but:
- those players are few and far between, and
- the skill level of players is always changing as existing players get better, and beginning players choose their classes which means the skill pool has a constant variety to it.

The primary damage dealing class deals the most damage? No wai!?
Of course they have dealt more damage, they are THE direct combat class for the game. Most competitive teams have a few soldiers in there as well, which will skew those numbers. The soldier is the most VERSATILE class in the game, which is why most competitive teams have them, but versatile isn't the same as overpowered.
So basically you are drawing the most simplistic possible conclusion from those stats. Look at actual class breakdowns, in a one-to-one situation there are plenty of classes that can deal with soldiers and shut them down. For all their POTENTIAL to be terrifying beasts of destruction, in the hands of an unskilled player they are terrible, and in the hands of a skilled player they are not unstoppable. Overpowered suggests to me that either any noob can pick up and play them and do really well, which is more true of demos and pyros than sollies, or that when they are being used to their full potential, no other classes can counter them which just isn't true. They were not overpowered.
I came back into this thread however to say that I am pretty sure the direct hit will get nerfed, totally OP >.>

It definitely does, I killed a guy with it last night :D
I came back because I was just playing and I have more points to make against TAT:
The soldier is also the ideal medic-buddy, even better than the heavy because he's more mobile, he can take down guns quicker and he deals good damage, so the stats you're quoting are even more skewed because its not actually that the soldier is OP, its just often more successful because they get focused on for healing, and thus do better.

They're a good medic buddy, and possibly the most efficient use of an uber, but in terms of their ability to keep their medic alive, deal damge consistently at close/long range etc, soldiers are better.
If I ever want to **** shit up as a Medic I'll actively seek out a Pyro.
Duko got me into TF2 by being the Heavy to my Medic, and I picked up a lot of good skills while doing so.
Due to the Soldier's increased vertical mobility, I just find them more prone to leaving me hanging as a Medic.
It's more beneficial to have a class to hide behind.

Then you want a Heavy. 300 HP when fully overhealed and a huge hitbox to hide behind, not to mention the highest dps of any class in close range.

not most but all. The two sollys + medic in a 6 man team are the core. Any team worth its salt will have two sollys in it at most times in a match and will only ever drop one to counter some other random class that the other team brings in eg: sniper, spy.

9 times out of 10 there'll be quite a build up of opposition, buildings, etc.
When it works, it's amazing fun.

not most but all. The two sollys + medic in a 6 man team are the core. Any team worth its salt will have two sollys in it at most times in a match and will only ever drop one to counter some other random class that the other team brings in eg: sniper, spy.

I know pendulum is overused but Granite hasn't been used in any I've seen (that weren't crap), and I've wanted to use it for a vid since I first heard it. The other four songs haven't been used in any videos I know of.

The footage in Arson is infinitely more interesting than the single clip of Pyro footage in your video. I realised while watching (yours) that W+M1 is derided because it's the most effective tactic a Pyro has, which is why no-one really makes Pyro frag vids.

Sorry TAT, I didn't make the movie to appeal to Pyro fans, because Pyros are of very limited usefulness in 6v6 comp games against good teams (limited meaning only sometimes on granary, which you saw).

Let's ignore the fact that most (some... not many?...) new people learn the layout of maps by starting off as Medic, but I think I can hold my own pretty well.
As an Engie I've learned sentry/tele/dispenser placements via trial & error, and it's a rare game when a Spy gets the better of me.
I've learned ambush skills from playing Spy that I found I could apply to Pyro... and vice-versa, and there are still Spy skills that I have yet to get any good at despite recently spending the majority of my time as one (indication of a steep learning curve).

Actually, my complaint was that your choice of music was unoriginal. Believe it or not I actually know a bit about video editing and how much work goes into it, which is why I never criticised the footage or the compilation itself.

Well, idiotic whinging aside, the sheer explosion in numbers of Soldiers and Demos has made it next-to-impossible to play for fun and the newest unlocks have unbalanced the game completely.
Let’s go back to previous updates:
Medic: most in need of balancing, awarded with a gun that heals (but lacks crits), the Kritzkrieg, and a melee saw that fills the uber meter.
Verdict: all address valid weaknesses in the Medic, and add dimension to strategy (uber or kritz)
Pyro: gets anti-Sniper weapon, a secondary function that rebounds certain projectiles, a flamer that gets crits from behind (incentive to ambush) and an axe that crits a flaming target.
Verdict: all address weaknesses in the Pyro, and add dimension to strategy
Sniper/Spy: an anti-Spy device, an anti-Pyro device (which also introduced minicrits to the game) and a different primary weapon; a crit headshot pistol and 2 new cloak watches.
Verdict: with the exception of the Ambassador (which was nerfed drastically), all the other unlocks address character weaknesses and add strategy to the classes.
Those are all niche classes, but even after the updates they remained just that. The Ambassador was nerfed so the Spy couldn’t be used contrary to it’s original role of infiltration and espionage. The Pyro has the airblast, but the jump capability was removed because it was altering the character a little too much.
Soldier/Demo: low-health kill pick (unable to be healed while equipped), rally banner, The Direct Shot; an instakill sword, a shield, and a sticky launcher that can detonate mines in groups.
The sword/shield combo are ridiculous, but I guess not any more or less insane than a baseball & bat, sandwich or jar of urine.
Before the Direct Shot, an Engie could heal a sentry faster than it could be rocketed to death – just. Now that’s not the case and the projectiles are even faster and deal more damage for that direct hit. It’s not addressing a weakness or flaw in the Soldier, and while it’s adding an extra dimension of strategy, it’s moving the class too far from its intended use. The Soldier now has a railgun and there are just not enough defences against it.
It’s bad enough that a Demo can destroy a sentry without detonating all of his stickies, too…

1) You don't need to be good to be in a clan, a clan is just a group of players
2) Being in a clan and being completely clueless/bad aren't mutually exclusive
3) I'm pretty sure you're talking about Duko's induction for panic, which was meant to be a funny challenge. Mine was to walk through Granary as a heavy with a team of spies after me, with an ever-increasing list of things to do after every kill (taunt, turn left, shout medic, etc etc etc)

I think you're exaggerating how much the new unlocks have changed the game, but to be fair to Valve, the Soldier and Demoman are by FAR the most powerful classes in the game already, especially on the choked, spammy maps the vast majority of pubbers play. Making balanced unlocks can not have been easy, and they did very well in my opinion.
The direct hit encourages proper aim rather than spamming at the floor, and rewards midair hits. At the moment it's ridiculously overpowered though, because it can one-hit 125hp classes, and one-hit 175hp classes who happen to have their feet a millimetre off the ground. It needs to have the minicrits removed (or at least the definition of 'midair' fixed) and the damage reduced to less than 125 point blank.
The sword and targe is good for a laugh, but it only really works in pub games because people have low awareness and are currently all playing explosive classes. A targe demo is meat to a heavy, trust me I've tried sword and board on payload pubs a lot in the last week. Otherwise, losing the sticky launcher (the best damage weapon in the game) is a huge tradeoff.
The blooper clip in the video where pick gets a 5-down on fray at mid with the sword and targe is misleading, we lost that game because we couldn't sticky up any chokepoints and scouts could just flank us constantly.

Yeah that's wrong.
Before an engie could fix his sentry faster than a single soldier could damage it, now an engie can fix his sentry exactly as fast as a single soldier can damage it.
If you were struggling to keep your sentry repaired to a single soldier with the regular rl, you're just not very good at engy. Sorry.
Although I do agree that the Direct Hit should deal regular damage to buildings, and the mini-crit on midair hits needs to be fixed, as at the momeny mid-air is defined as not on the ground this means if a class is just jumping a foot into the air by pressing space, or floating/swimming in water, then it counts as a midair shot.
Also, anything with bullets stops a targe+eyelander demo dead in his tracks, as does an airblast.
The chargin' targe is nowhere near op, as while it has all these nifty things it does (explosion resistance, fire resistance (which should be taken down a little) and a speedboost ending in a small critboost) the loss of the sticky launcher is a massive loss to the demoman.
edit: Hmm, haven't been on the Hyper forums since the link to them from pcpp was taken down.
We should do a pcpp vs hyper highlander sometime, hopefully you guys can get enough players this time :(

You guys are pretty good. It might be arrogance in my part but I am pretty sure I am on level terms with your scouts, when I'm at my best. Though I often have absolutely catastrophic sessions, but then everyone does. I've only picked up solly recently, but I'm improving pretty steadily, I don't get a lot of opportunity to practice my airshots and you guys are right on the money with that.
The lack of heavy in comp play is a big disappointment to me, if I could be called a career anything it would be heavy, though I can play scout, heavy, soldier and pyro at what I'd call a competitive level and sniper and spy at least well enough to not embarress myself, even against good players (though I largely waste my time with them).
I understand what TAT is getting at with the music. It gets tiresome when every frag video, be it good or bad always has the same sort of generic music. Throbbing beat, enough slow bits that you can time the wanky slowmos to go along with it :P Honestly though, I can't think of anything better either. I guess I'd throw some upbeat pop or something in there, just to separate it from the herd a bit but whatever.
Oh and TAT, and it won't be that long before people realise the targe and direct hit aren't as good as the originals and stuff goes back to normal. You babby :P The DHs extra damage is good, don't get me wrong, but the original rocket launcher is almost as good for dealing direct damage and the splash damage makes it more useful in more situations.

One choice tactic amongst the Pubs is for a Solly to run around corners and make reflex shots (as Snipers do to Scouts) and come off with next-to-no splash damage.

haha awww. TAT its not a players skill that allows him/her to play in a clan or competitively. Its a players awareness, attitude and willingness to learn that are most important. Back in the day when you used to be my Heal-Bot and we would rip up goldrush it was your awareness and willingness to listen that allowed us to be so successful so don't go around saying your a bad player or what not cause your better then 90% of the pubbers out there.

To be fair DP, it was the first induction into panic and i was kinda freaking out a bit and i kinda thought that if i did really badly at the challenge(which i did...) that they might not let me in so TAT's idea about it being a key part of my introduction can be excused imo.

The problem is we can find 9 people but getting them all organised for one place/time is annoying, and most people on this forum are quite casual players, meaning a lot are limited to experience with only one or two classes. That means they want to play those classes and someone like me (who'd pref play scout/heavy) or Surgeon or something has to volunteer to play spy or something because no one else will, which means our experienced players aren't playing at their best.
Basically, organising hyperians into a cogent team is difficult, afaict :P

No offence intended here Almighty, but it's impossible to say you're on level terms with our scouts if you've never played 6v6 in an organised team. 90% of a scout's work is awareness, teamwork, knowing when to push, when to mop, and when to bait enemies into your demo's traps.
Sure your aim might be up there with the best scouts on the planet, but if you don't have smarts that doesn't mean much. That's something you just can't learn in a pub server. But hey, you should join some pugs sometime, they're good fun.

Me too. The european teams use heavies a lot, and when the gloves of running urgently (comp beta unlock) are finally released, heavies will be a lot more viable in competitve play. They're still used frequently on Attack/Defence maps, but Australian teams tend to prefer 5cp push maps, on which speed is key and Heavies are just too slow.
In that case, we could always just do a regular pcpp vs hyper game, one that's not highlander.

Favourite thing to do against a stacked pub server: use the same inane tactic repeatedly to see if the opposition are smart enough to counter it.

Dustbowl Stage 3, Defense: go kamikaze Pyro and use the tunnel repeatedly.
They only had the one Engie. With another they could have guarded the front and rear, and I wouldn't have been able to keep coming up from behind them.
I've been having a lot of fun with this recently, developing my Sniper and Demo skills.
I've never really used either but a bit of persistence and earning a few milestones in each class has increased my liking of both.

I never really played demo after the update, so I've had some fun playing demo while everyone else is engy. The 'destroy 50 buildings' achievement went by really fast with everyone throwing down those mini sentries :p
That said a lot of matches are just stalemates with people building crap everywhere on both sides. Haven't found any open servers running the new maps yet.
Same, Ash, but it's the Spy achievements that I need: 1000 saps & 1000 backstabs
I got Engie Milestone 3 this morning, along with the last of the new weapons, The Wrangler. It enables you to point and shoot the sentry, regardless of distance. Cool, but you really need to be buddied with another Engie who can keep your ammo stocks full.
The new shotty, Frontier Justice, is absolutely boss. It gives you a crit for every kill a destroyed sentry gets, up to 35, I think.
I'm not really a fan of the Gunslinger/Mini-sentry combo just yet. Maybe on Offense?

Yeah the Gunslinger is fantastic for Battle-Engying. I had a go of it on one of the new payload maps and being able to bust out a sentry in ~2secs on the front line is rather amazing. Your sentry is highly disposable with this playstyle (I put down 3 or 4 at times within seconds before it stayed there) and even if it only scores 1 or 2 kills per life that adds to your Frontier Justice revenge counter. Coupled with being able to move your buildings Engy is 10x more fun to play on offence now.

They ran a contest for people to design weapons/hats for each class which should have a 'theme of some sort and Valve picked the winners. More classes to come after the initial winners

Major updates are all listed on the right.
I think Heavies have:
- Natasha (Primary): slows enemies, does half damage
- Sandvich (Secondary): eat it or drop it for health
- KGB (Melee): boxing gloves which give you a few seconds of crits on hit
- Dalokah Bar (Sec): increase maximum health temporarily
Engies got:
- Frontier Justice (Pri): reduced to 3 shells, but when your sentry is destroyed, it gives you crits for the sentry kills
- Wrangler (Sec): control your sentry by remote (shoot at things out of its range)
- Gunslinger (Melee): robot hand; also replaces sentry with fast-building mini-sentry -- great offensive option
And all buildings can be moved

Sorry lads, wont be able to play tonight most likely. I left my PC on to continue the download this morning, but it seems that it stops the download when it goes into sleep mode, which it does prett quickly. Still have around 5 gigs to go.

You need to get yourself into payload maps which involve pushing a bomb through maps. Much fun to be had. Instant respawn 2fort maps are also good to stuff around and get some practice on.

First big update since the Engie Update (over a month ago), and it's a big one!
Summary:
- in-game economy realised (trading, using irl money to purchase items)
- in the case of items made by community members, they will receive a small percentage of profits from their items
- current weapon & hat drop rate UNCHANGED
- Valve plan to continue to release FREE item/map packs to retain the unity of the playing community (sucks to play CoD)
- existing wearable drop items will be labelled as VINTAGE to discern from purchased items (preserve the rarity of competition items, etc)
- POLYCOUNT PACK released (new item/hat sets for Scout, Soldier, Spy, Pyro & Sniper); equipping all items from a set will grant a special class bonus - e.g., in the case of the Sniper, cannot be head-shot or perform head-shots. INTERESTING

Either that or use them as trade bait. This morning I found a guy who was willing to buy black paint, colour a post-Vintage Texas Ten Gallon, throw in a Reclaimed Metal and trade me for my Vintage TTG. Turns out you can't buy Black Paint, so the deal fell through.
Amusingly, I started off with the Stout Stako (Soldier) and a crate the other day. Bought a key for the crate and got the Pyro Sombrero. Traded both of those for the Texas Ten Gallon and a Demo Fro. Then traded Gemerald his Pyro Rubber Glove hat for my Demo Fro. Then traded another guy the Rubber Glove for another Demo Fro.

I dunno, man, I paid $2.49 and got the Pyro Sombrero. You can't buy that hat (though the cheapest hat goes for $4.99) so I'm pretty sure I came out on top.

Sidenote: AMD drivers can be updated through Steam.
Version 10.9 is out currently. I updated this morning, reset, and everything is fine. Crossfire was detected automatically and I've basically never had less trouble with the drivers. I definitely recommend giving it a go.

I've been playing some TF2 lately.
Seems like everyone (except Watchers and I) have hats. Also, the whole Mann Co Supply Crate system is really lame. I really want to open the 2 that I have, but $2.50 each is kinda shitty for what might be another weapon.
That being said, 99c is a small price to pay to beat Watchers in a duel.
Edit - Completely forgot, some dude did that 'buy everyone a free gift' thing in the server I was in last night. I assumed it might give away a hat or two . . . nope. Think I got another dalokohs bar or something. What a waste of $20.

I had 2 fancy fedoras and after a long time of them mocking me (I don't play spy that much and usually invis / disguised) I crafted them both to get something different, which ended up being the sniper fishing hat. Not a bad result, but had I held onto them woulda gotten some sweet trades at the moment. Recently got the Chieftain's hat for soldier which isn't bad.
Also got the cheater's lament (halo) after the new update went live which was funny since I used the idler back in the day.
So in summary I have in my possession 2 hats (not counting event/game freebies) and only 1 refined metal so gonna be a while before I get more. Have a crate but am not spending a cent on virtual goods. I was in a server where someone deployed a gift box or whatever though, I got another battleaxe.
I've deployed the 'gift the server' gift twice now, both times on my favourite server. Both of those times I also purchased keys for crates, both of which ended up being Pyro hats (new sombrero) which I traded on for better stuff. Good will = Good luck?

There are several dedicated threads for common trades (hat for hat, metal, crates, etc), though none are stickied. Hilariously, due to the absolute wealth of trade threads there is a limit on the amount of threads users can create every 48 hours: 1.
If all else fails, a TF2 trade thread will appear on /v/ every couple of hours.
