I remember one of my friends who was working as a pathologist received the samples of the Brisbane Lions from their team doctor. They were taken right after a game and she was completely shocked about the levels of different things going on in bloodwork, she compared it to people who are dying. So yes, it's a cliche, but in a lot of cases they really do give it 110%

It depends on what baseline is being used to describe 100% - it is not necessarilly an absolute measure.

Well one would assume when athletes say that they mean "110% of what my body can do", not "110% compared to what some blob dying in a ward somewhere can do".

If a sportsperson is still alive after giving 110%, as far as I'm concerned they should be giving 120%.
Edit: Or more.

This isnt really cliche but my mates coach said this at their footy practise.
"Think of the ball as your girlfriends virginity, you gotta pass it around the team"

Your mate's coach is a dreadful fool.
Unless it is over 40s social cricket; then it is entirely appropriate.

Well, full credit to the boys, they gave it 110 percent and um took it one week at time and we stuck to our structures and won the contested ball and ah um us forwards got good delivery from the midfield and we were up and running early, running on top of the ground and ah um they're a quality opposition, we knew they were going to give a real hot go but full credit to the boy obviously. They gave it 110 percent. We'll have a good week on the track during week and back up for next week and see how we go.
