Are we getting Monster Hunter G as well?
This is actually one really nice looking Wii game but that could just be because all the screens I have seen of it are tiny :/
If I still had my Wii and I didn't already know Monster Hunter is ****ing boring I would be so hard for this.

Apparently it's very much a My-first-Monster-Hunter game.
I might give it a miss as it would probably be too easy (still harder than 99% of games out there though)
Then again, it IS Monster Hunter
Wow fro mthat video the game seems to look really pretty. Im sold on it based on the fact it wont be as hard as the others. I know its unhardcore but I enjoy my games to be a little easier than most it seems.

There's nothing boring about taking down a monster who's ten times your size and capable of killing you in two hits! :p

There's my biggest worry about this game. If it's inferior to MHFU, there'll be no incentive to play it. I'll give it a go regardless because it looks really good so far.

I'll keep an eye on this one. I'll definitely be looking for something to play online after I buy my Wireless router in four or five weeks time.
Edit: BTW the closing date for the comp WhyMe mentioned was September 27th so those who got excited about that will have to go without. Darn!

Apparently, there's a new weapon class in this game (Slash Axe) and a full story mode which sees you rebuilding the town after it was destroyed by a monster. That's right, you have to use materials to build stuff like the weapon forge and the shop and such.
Also, no-one here has mentioned underwater fighting, which is new.
I'm very interested now. Even if it is inferior to MHFU, if it can differentiate itself enough from that game then that will make it worth playing. :p

A good write-up on last week's MH3 preview event by multiple Lizzie winner James Cottee, via Games.on.net (http://games.on.net/article/8386/Hands-on_Monster_Hunter_Tri).
A not-so-good write-up on last week's MH3 preview event by former forumer, Clockelf/Artemis/etc, via Gamepro AU (http://www.gamepro.com.au/article/339376/monster_hunter_tri_hands-on_report_too_hardcore_wii_gamers_/). Come on, Clocky - you kicked off my misspelling the location and it was pretty much downhill from there. The comments are pretty lol though.
There seems to be all but a hard confirmation that the western version includes Wii Speak support - I've picked one up on the cheap in preparation and I'm keeping an eye on local games sites to lock in a preorder. Definitely looking to grab the Classic Controller Pro bundle.
While I'll be grabbing MH3 with no major expectations, I think the Internode article frames some of the weapon changes pretty well, so I'm looking forward to getting to grips with it.
ahahahahahahahaaaa I choked on my milk. I don't think there is a person alive who knows less about videogames and writes about them.

He's right in the sense that the game will really only appeal to niche. It rewards effort and patience, two things modern gamers lack. Hell if it weren't for Quatters help and some youtube vids, I would have given up on MHFU pretty early on.
His comments regarding heavy weapons make it pretty apparent that its not an immediately accessible title; it's not something that's going to click when playing at a booth at a press event.
You also have to remember that Nintendo's core demographic has dramatically shifted with the Wii. I doubt the people who get Wiis for sports and party games, and Wii fit, will even know of Monster Hunter's existence.

I definitely wouldn't have used Great Swords if not for a YouTube vid (provided by Maxi) explaining how to use them. I used to think they were frustrating to use, now they're my weapon of choice!
I think I still would have done fairly well on my own, but I also benefited greatly from Quatters' help. I think the real problem with this game is it doesn't do a good enough job explaining itself and preparing you for what lies ahead, and the only way to get good at the game is to either put in heaps of time and learn the stuff yourself, or learn it off a more experienced player. Actually, with free online and voice chat, that may not be such a ridiculous idea...

Holy shit, April 29th? I better have finished Infinite Space/Half Minute Hero by then... ;)

LOL I just read that Gamepro article, what the heck? That's professional journalism? That dude must have sucked at the game. The game would be terrible if you just ran up to monsters and slashed randomly, you've got to THINK. I was there at the event, it was shitloads of fun, I cleared two 20 minute quests and it was epic. Everyone there I played with got the hang of it pretty easily, the key was COMMUNICATION. I think the game will be quite huge myself. Was impressed how the wifi connection did not drop out once during the 3-4 hours it was set up, especially considering we were in the middle of nowhere.
Here's my own crappy little writeup (http://www.pietriots.com/post/Monster-Hunter-Tri-Event-Impressions.aspx) of the event.

Considering Portable 3rd contains monsters from Tri, I'd say you'd really only need to play one of them. For me, that's Classic Controller Pro >>>>>> PSP controls & it's shitty battery life.
Still, these expanded online options intrigue me, and I can't seem to find any information whatsoever pertaining to better online for Portable 3rd. What have you read? If there actually is online play, I might buy it along with Tri (and a new PSP battery...).
I'll be getting the Xbox 360 version.
As in the port of the four year old Monster Hunter Frontier? If it actually comes out here, and loses the monthly subscription fee that MH3 also dropped in its Western transition, I'll be nabbing that as well :D
The more Monster Hunter, the better!

Don't get too excited. As WhyMe pointed out, it's a port of a four year old PC game that only has a release date for Japan so far. So it's more of a 'wait and see' sort of thing, but it's certainly got promise...
What have you read?
Whatever Quatters tells me. I just automatically believe anything he says re: Monster Hunter, so for all I know it could be rumours or utter bullcrap. ;)
Also, 'improved online' doesn't automatically mean 'infrastructure mode', but I'm praying that it does. :p
The PSP one also won't have underwater fighting.
Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing remains to be seen. ;)
I wonder if Freedom 3 is also gonna include Tri's "story" mode.

Totally played this at the Brisbane Supanova today. The Classic Controller Pro is fantastic, the game is awesome, etc.
I almost beat this dude (http://monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Qurupeco) with my Sword & Shield skills - got him down to limping - but the 20 minute time limit ran out. I didn't beat him fast enough because (1) I should have picked the Great Sword instead, would have done waaay more damage, although (2) I might have died with my less-than-swift attack skills as he summoned one of these ****ing things (http://monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Rathian) which I had to dodge the whole time. If it were a multiplayer demo I could have baited it and had the other guy kill the boss, but it was single player so evading wasted a lot of my time.
Still, it was completely awesome! I can't wait to buy it!

I'm really unsure as to whether to pick this up or not, I've never played Monster Hunter before. The Classic Controller Pro is really tempting, though (still haven't got a classic controller).

I'm semi-interested in getting this game but the thing turning me off is that I don't want to sink 300+ hours into it.
Is there any point buying Monster Hunter Tri if you're only prepared to put 20-30 hours into a game?
I find your logic strange.
Why wouldn't you want a game that lasts 300+ hours? You're not forced to sit there and play it for hours on end in one sitting, and if those 300 hours end up being a fun 300 hours over a long period of time, what's the problem?

Not everyone can dedicate that much time to a single game.

I make the same argument when people complain about a game only lasting 8 hours.
300hrs would be a chore if it was to encompass the full scope of a storyline.
But Monster Hunter has no plot (well afaik Tri has no plot), you're basically a dude who hunts monsters and the ultimate goal is simply to aqiure better gear so you can vanquish epic monsters. People rack up immense play time purely due to the large scope of the game world and the difficulty of the game (though apparently Tri is a little easier).
If you're looking for a game to just plough through in 20 hours, this ain't it. Monster Hunter is one of those games you'll play constantly between other games; similar to Forza or Street Fighter.

Yes. I've only put ~30 hours into the PSP version (for one main reason: PSP is a shithouse with a shitty battery that I keep having to ****ing recharge every single ****ing time I turn the piece of shit on **** you Sony) and I have loved every hour of the game - it's incredibly rewarding!

This game is fantastic!
My only complaints so far are related to the music: it totally isn't as atmospheric in that sea town as it was in the mountain village on MHF2, and the pig snuggle song isn't as good as the MHF2 version either!
I had a really tough time with the first main monster fight. I had to try the quest about 3 times before I beat it, but that just makes the game so much more rewarding. I have a feeling this is one of those games I'm gonna but 100+ hours into >_>

No you don't. Just had a flip through the manual and there are two control modes per controller (or maybe one wiimote, two classic) for each of the combat styles. Of course the wiimote setups involve waggle, so that shit can go and die in the arse.

I've completed three quests now - the mushroom one, the guts one, and the Jaggi/a one (twice), and I've got a sweet Hunter's Dagger. I really must use the Great Sword sometime though, as my time in the MHF2 arena showed me how awesome they are!

Nope. The Classic Controller Pro is fantastic, however. The evenly spaced face buttons make the game control basically the same to the PSP version.
The only advantage the GCN controller might offer over the pro that I can think of is that I have trouble reliably hitting X + A together for the SnS jump attack, whereas it would probably be easier to on the GCN controller (then again, that would mean my main means of attacking would involve pressing the X button all the time, which wouldn't be very good considering A is twice its size) :/

Almost at the 10 hour mark, I've just finished that first set of 1-star and 2-star quests available to you.
Totally started my hot set of Jaggi Armour thanks to taking down the Great Jaggi - I just need to do the quest again to get the belt and the greaves to finish off my set. I've also pimped it out with Attack decorations so I can end up with that Attack (M) skill. Next time I do the quest I'm going to give my upgraded Great Sword a go, see if it can be done any quicker than I did it with the SnS.

I've noticed the front box says "Online Play Supported" rather than the Wi-Fi logo, and I couldn't see anything relating to Friend Codes in the game or the manual...
...how does one play with Friends? Is just says you "Register" them to enable Wii Speak chat, but how does one organise and set up MH questing? Do you just ensure the same gate and city is picked?

Setting up your friends list is a little awkward to start - you need to know their 6 digit alphanumeric code or you can search for their (exact) character name. Certainly an improvement on the 10 jillion digit friend codes of old, but still a little fiddly.
Once they're friended, you can send messages, warp to their city and chat via Wii Speak.
I'd also advise to go into online options and enable the ability to receive messages while on a quest - this also makes it a bit easier to hook up with friends.

I tell you what, I used to have $2000 worth of Woolies shares. That only ever earnt me $30 a year. Even though there's very lil profit margin in selling videogames stuff, it still beats the hell out of owning shares. People have this false idea that just because they buy shares that they will get rich.

My mate defeated the Lagiacrus, what a crusty turd. I'm up to the 4 star missions in single player but I still need to finish the HR 8 urgent quest before I can get any new online quests, which sucks because I've attemped it about 5 times and either lost or got disconnected each time, despite already finishing said quest in sp.

If you have a usb keyboard, just use that. A $5 usb extension cable helps.
You can only wii speak with your Hunter friends and the sound quality is pretty poor.
I'm up to the Lagiacrus (or whatever it is called) but gonna make a new armour set before I take it on. Probably the Ludroth set.
I'm finding the underwater combat is fine for the easy slow enemies, but pretty annoying for most of the bosses.

I bought the $89 bundle before from JB, came with a free Wii Speak. I don't really plan on using it, but it's free hey, so you might aswell grab it from there if you think you might use it.
Picked up this game yesterday and have put in a couple of hours so far. Still trying to get the hang of everything but I can see myself losing a few hours into it once I figure everything out. One thing im wondering though is are the online quests different to offline ones?

I found a solution to this problem if anyone else is having the same issue.
It seems that the game defaults to widescreen view so in options at the main menu you need to set the screen size to 4:3.
THis solved the issue, though it does appear you need to do it each time you start the game.

Always gonna be slow with a giant sword. Hammers don't restrict your movement as much, but have slow normal attacks and can't block. Shouldn't have too much trouble with the G. Sword, remember to doge all the time, and if ya need to heal, sheath and run off.

Switch Axe is awesome. I use the Qurupeco Hammer (fire damage!) for any water based biggies (Royal Ludroth etc) the extra speed under water plus the charge attack means I take 'em out in a few mins.

Hey guys, picked this up on the australian release day and I'm up to 111 hours played so far. If anyone wants to play online my name in the game is also Raelz and ID is UD8XFJ , though I'll be playing with my local friends alot of the time in the high rank servers, I'm up for powering through some of the other stuff for kicks :D .
Also Ashmaran, Sidochrome, long time since I've seen those names (alias of Razer_ice reporting in from good ol' MH1!)
Ashmaran
13-05-2010, 06:59 PM
Oh yeah I remember, good times.
I haven't played much online, the small room sizes has been a bit of a deterrent (the 8 in the original game was heaps better) since it's harder to get a decent group going.
Thinking about my next armour set, probably either Rathian, Gobul or Lagiacrus depending on how easy it is to accumulate materials. I've got a fairly decent array of weapons going:
Peco Hammer
Spiral Lance
Gobul LS
Barroth SA
Buster Blade
Really enjoying the LS in this, pity they got rid of the generic starter ones and you get it so late. I do miss the Bow though, the bowguns seem even more complicated in this one.
Edit: Oh god jumped online tonight so much fail, people kept dying on Royal Ludroth and Qurupeco. The only hunting quests I managed to complete successfully were the Great Jaggi Hunt/Capture. I swear it would be easier soloing them online. People would get owned and not bring pots, so they would fight on with no health until they died...I can't imagine how quick people will die on Barroth...

Ouch man, sounds painful :S . If you're online when my high rank friends aren't on I'll help you through some of the lower stuff since I'm kinda over-geared for it now :D (and I'm a bit tired of farming Rathian for Rathian Rubies... damn 3% drop rate...)

Anyone got a team of four going? I think Nintendo AU has sort of competition to tie in with MH3T. Don't know the specifics, but I think (the general idea was that the) best team score gets you and your three friends two years of free games from Nintendo AU.

Sweet killed Lagiacrus, and busted him up hardcore. Cut his tail, broke his horns and wounded his chest. Lance is definitely the weapon of choice for him, the guard advance is so useful as well.

Getting close to Hunter Rank 50 online, not long until I can have a go at Alatreon! I also picked up an Ancient Shard that turned into the Worn spear, which will turn into an excellent anti-dragon lance once I get my hands on a Lagia Sapphire (3% drop-rate, turbulence ahead, considering for all my weapon upgrades I now need 4 of those!)
Ashmaran

Yeah the rare drops suck, I want a rathian plate to finish off the set I'm building. Had a go at Barioth with my fire hammer, was pretty painful so just ended after doing both subquests. Gonna take a lance in next time.
Made an Eternal Strife, pretty cool will try that on Rathian next time I don't get any plates.
Had some issues trying to play with sidochrome online on the weekend. Worked fine for me in random games, he had no issue but we couldn't join each other. Totally whacked. Set up my wii to be in the DMZ zone, see how we go.

ok so im completely new to this franchise. is anyone willing to answer my noob questions or can anyone point me in the direction of a good guide to get you started?
so far im having issues with:
1. do i need to read a combination book to get my combo skill up? if so how? i bought one but i cant seem to 'use' it
2. how do i fish? ive combined some goldfish bait (the future alpha male told me on two separate days which things to combine) but i am worried that if i go on this quest ill simply just waste the bait not knowing what to do or not use it in the right area.
3. how do i feed monsters? the first quest i got required 2 ripe mushrooms for side part b, i read that i had to feed unique mushrooms to the ant monsters and then kill them to harvest ripe mushrooms but i could not figure out how to do this.
any help on these dumb questions would be greatly appreciated.
im liking the game so far but i can see how it would be daunting to a new comer who had no expectations of the learning curve.
Raelz
25-05-2010, 06:33 PM
Yay question time!
1. Nah you don't need to "read" it as such, just having it in your inventory while combining things will boost your combination %. Note that this also works when you combine items within your item box with the combination books inside the item box as well. With all 5 books in my item box I have a 0% chance of failed combos now :D.
2. Fishing.. You can only actually always have fish so you won't waste bait (and when you use goldenfish bait you are guaranteed to only have goldenfish biting the bait). You basically go to fishing spot, hit the gather button, you'll throw out the bait, then when the bait drops sharply below the water hit the gather button again. Be sure to take extra bait as the fish can get away with it if you mess up the timing, but you'll get used to the timing after a few goes.
Also the fishing spot on the island is in area 10 I believe, basically go to the edge of the water, follow it all the way right (when you're looking out at the water) and you should run along a school of fish just at the waters edge at some point. There's your fishing spot, enjoy!
3. You can't actually feed them yourself, but if you leave the ant monsters be for a minute or two, they usually go off to a mushroom or honey point and eat from them. You'll know they've eaten because their stomach (I'm assuming) balloons up, then you kill them and you can gather the sparkly that drops on the floor for honey/mushrooms/assorted goodies.
Hope this cleared up a few things Duko!
Had a go at Barioth with my fire hammer, was pretty painful so just ended after doing both subquests. Gonna take a lance in next time.
Reminds me of when I tried to kill him with my dragon hammer... so painful... never again will I fight Barioth with a weapon that can't guard (weapon of choice for me fighting Barioth is SnS)

As you progress in the offline quests, you get 'farm quests' for areas you have unlocked and can just go gather and hand in an item when you want to return.
Otherwise just line up easy quests, do all your gathering then finish the quest.

Got horribly bored at the beginning, but now that more of the game has opened up and i've been messing with the great sword, things got more interesting. Then I did the quest Big Game Hunting, tasking me with killing the great jaggi.
Having almost died a few times and run out of potions, and only 10 minutes to spare, I ran around scavenging for herbs and blue mushrooms. I killed him within the last 5 minutes of the timer, adrenaline pumping. I'm now in love.

I got lost in grinding.
What weapon did everyone go from the default one?
I think I was given a great sword but it's just too slow for me, so I made a bone lance. Been using it since.
I made a great sword simply because the aesthetic idea sounded more awesome than the shitty sword/shield you start with. Sorta learned and gotten used to it, can't seem to find anything else I like now. Don't mind the speed, I find thinking ahead, high damage and the range evens it out personally.
I'm a king with the lance. By which I mean, I'm decent with it and shit with everything else. Except the great sword, I can use that pretty well.
