The handheld iteration of the classic franchise has arrived, with the shameless cross-promotion being provided by God of War's Kratos.
I got it today and I think it's pretty good, but I'd like to ask the Soul Calibur fans: how does it stack up to the others in the series? Is it worth keeping or am I better off trading it in for SCIV? I suppose the PSP version has a better D-Pad than the 360 in it's favour... :p

Is it the same as the "TV" console version? Man, I should get this game but I've got too much else to buy atm :( Should wait til it gets cheap. What you pay for it Mr M?

It's pretty much SoulCalibur IV handheld, but they've changed a few things for the PSP edition. The Star Wars characters are out and two new characters are in (Kratos and Dampierre). There's no "Arcade" mode as such, though the three new Trials modes loosely equate to Normal, Hard and Survival modes. The Gauntlet mode is like a detailed tutorial mode. It's a pretty amazing effort given the PSP's humble specs. It's very faithful to SCIV in terms of look and feel.

Really? My PSP d-pad is ****ing horrible to use (have the original PSP but I didn't think they changed it later on), it's so hard to hit the diagonal directions on it. So in my case the 360 one is mucccccccch better to use.

Thanks for that consoul. Man, this would be a great game for PSP to have a bash on for a bit.

The only fighter I have on PSP is Tekken Dark Ressurrection, the dpad isn't amazing but it does the job. I think you can get add on dpads which make it better.
I already have SCIV on PS3 so don't feel the need for the PSP version anyway

D-pad add-ons don't do shit from my experience.
Best thing I did was take the exisiting d-pad out (not a hard job, I'm no electronics wizz), and put small balls of blu-tac underneath each of the four points of the d-pad, and then a thin piece of plastic in the shape of the d-pad cut to size, as a sort of spacer on top of the blu-tac. Then put it back together.
This way you increase the depth of the contact point under the d-pad, requiring less effort to register your input. Worked a treat with SFA3.

$70, but I got it from EB so I could return it if I didn't like it.

I have a PSP 2000 and the D-Pad is excellent. Maybe it's just me, but hitting the diagonals is an absolute non-issue. I shudder to imagine how crap it would be with the X360 pad.
And yes, I'm pretty sure the D-Pads on later models are miles better than the original. Better quality buttons and none of that 'el cheapo' bullshit that ruined the original PSP (particularly the face buttons).

Yeah, I like jumping into Endless Trial and seeing how far I can get. The Gauntlet is pretty crap because I already did all the training in SC3. But who knows, maybe there's something in there that I forgot. :p
