Also need a distortion pedal. Any other types of pedals worth getting? I'm starting to think of finally amassing a bunch of them.

Any other effects. Thinking some reverb or delay first and an expression pedal thingo, maybe a rotary speaker thingo down the track. Any others worth getting?

See when it ended all I thought was 'so where's the point?' =P Doesn't matter!
ps; guyz, need a cheap distort pedal, I can't believe I haven't picked up one yet. Any reliable ideas? Thanks!

Depends what you want. I'd check out the Boss DS-1 as they're pretty popular and can be modded down the track. The big muff will give a load of fuzz and you can pick them up for just over 100 dollars if you look.

Also depends on what kind of amp you're running it in to.

I'd probably say for value your best bet is a Boss ds-1 cos I believe you can get them for less than $100 and Kurt Cobain used one:D.

Other cool effects are chorus and reverb. I don't particularly like delay. Wah is sweet and so is pitch shifting, but I think pitch shifters can be really expensive.

For anyone interested I've found a site with every Pavement song on tab and from what I've played of them they seem to be good quality http://sites.google.com/site/pavetabs/

Really digging the CGDGBE used on most of their songs. Also used on some Sonic Youth and Thurston Moore songs I think.

Wow thank you.

Listening now. I don't really like the hard right acoustic guitar, unbalances my ears. :(

Might be alright for just a short time but it goes for a while.

It's all a bit too Country Music Channel for me though. :/

big_b
24-05-2010, 07:18 PM
It's single tracked steel slide guitar until the second verse which is when the string section and double tracked guitars come in. It's more delta blues in the led zeppelin 'in my time of dying' than country music. It's about killing and burying you woman for cheating. ;)

JimmyKane

The Morning After was a stand out tune. The rest sound a bit... like sheeps said, stale, tbh.

Very well produced at any rate :p

I'm gonna try to do some aleatoric songwriting tonight. For those who don't know, this is when an aspect of the music is left to chance. In this case I'm gonna be rolling a die and filling out a grid to determine where the accents will be. Should be interesting.

Forgot to mention, big b, one of your songs sounded like an Alice Donut song that I can't remember. This is a good thing.

Also, my aleatoric song was an absolute mind****. Will try again.

Hey, theory dudes, I just wrote a song in a dorian scale. I don't know whether the name of the scale is D or E dorian. The tonic is the E and it's the notes from D major. To clarify:

E-F#-G-A-B-C#-D-E

So it's a D major scale played from the major second (E). For some reason D dorian has always seemed like the right thing to call it, I'm no longer so sure. This has always really confused me.

Music theory pisses me off. I am moving out of the music subject at school, a fact in which I get no small amount of amusement from. I will continue to play outside of school, but I don't need to know what a cadence is.

The way I remember it is that it dorian is the aeolian mode (aka the natural minor scale; eg. all white notes in A) but with a sharpened sixth (in this case the C is sharpened to C#).

Mixolydian is also easy to remember as it's just the major scale with a dominant seventh.

Lydian is the major scale but with a sharpened fourth (eg. F# in C) and phrygian is the natural minor but with a flattened second (eg. Bb in A).

Locrian is just ****ed up so I don't bother remembering it. ;)

I will continue to play outside of school, but I don't need to know what a cadence is.Personally I love knowing what cadences are because it means I can avoid them at all costs! :p Both the perfect and imperfect cadences sound ridiculously cheesy / cliched to me...

Still probably the best way to modulate to a foreign key by going I (old) -> II(minor7, new key) -> V(dom7, new key) -> I (new key)

(eg. Dmajor -> Fmajor, I'd go D -> Gmin -> C7 -> F)

The last chord change is a perfect cadence into the new key, so it really sets up the new key for your ear and lets it sound like a more natural modulation.

As an interesting aside, this technique provides the backbone of most jazz progressions.

.StaticA.
02-06-2010, 12:40 PM
Unfortunately that also sounds quite cheesy. :p
Changing keys can be a bitch sometimes though, so it's good to know different ways to get around it. Usually if it doesn't sound right for me to change key, I just don't do it. That's a pretty basic songwriting lesson right there haha.

I've got literally nearly 150 of them. I used to tab shit out in PowerTab a lot. Most of it is pretty average, but there are quite a few good complete or near-complete songs, and even just awesome riffs that I didn't realise I was capable of.
Hopefully I'll get a chance to use some of it one day.

BB2K

Sibelius shits me, we have to use it at school. I did compose a fairly awesome cover of Mary Had a Little Lamb with it, but that's all I could do. I think we were supposed to do another short song, but I never finished it.

Cobla
03-06-2010, 07:26 PM
I still write a lot, but I haven't counted my catalogue in about 10 years! (iirc it was ~a hundred finished songs circa 2000)

Since then I've realised that the number is irrelevant, for obvious reasons. I also made a conscious effort to convince myself that if in fact one has "it" they don't ever lose "it".

Maybe the problem which is obvious in a lot of older songwriters (ie. they start releasing utter shite) is that they become complacent. I understand of course, if everyone tells you you're an amazing songwriter one day you will start to believe that you actually do shit pure gold (eg. Roger Waters, who these days has no problem claiming "I'm one of the top 5 songwriters EVER" haha!)

Anyway my point is that I liberated myself from that too, and now if I don't write a song for a month or two I don't start stressing about it, in fact I barely notice! ;) I think my songs are better too, simply because I don't second guess myself all the time. If a song turns out shit I just scrap it and forget it ever existed. :D

Yeah, I've actually got one. :D

They are brilliant toys but not very practical except for special effects, so I rarely use mine. Also it's more of an overdub thing for me seeing as how I don't have it tethered to anything. (some people hang a cradle for it off their guitar body / headstock / mic stand) So without something like that I can't really switch to it mid-song.

If you're thinking about getting one, I would recommend you first start with a volume pedal. Similar 'slow attack' effects are possible, plus you also have a way to instantly turn yourself up or down without stopping playing.

And as a bonus volume pedals are a lot cheaper!

So the Advanced Diploma in Music Performance class want me as their bass player for a gig at a pub in 9 days and I need to learn 20 songs. It's not like it's hard being bass guitar and all, but still, that's on top of me playing 12-14 songs on drums for my current class in another performance in 4 days.

Spudzilla

Just about, but I ended up forgetting about it because I spent most of my time learning all the songs in our class on both bass and drums because our line up for each song was still up in the air until a month ago.

I should go back and finish learning it once I'm done with these performances.

Just dropping an application I found today, not sure if this has been posted before:
http://www.tuxguitar.com.ar/

Pretty sweet (free, open-source) Guitar Pro alternative. Supports practically all the .gp* files, and seems pretty darn robust and feature-packed. I gave it a test-ride with a 7-instrument tab for Blind Guardian's "Fly" (http://www.911tabs.com/link/?3384706), which it cruised through - with MIDI-based audio, granted, but getting Guitar Pro to perform well was always a pain in the arse for me.

On a technical note, if you're planning on installing TuxGuitar on Windows, take the Java Runtime-dependent installation.

There're other open-source scorewriters available that've sprung up recently, too, so I'll probably give them a look and report back at some point. Definitely a better situation than 2 years ago.

JimmyKane

Goddamn I just spent a couple of days capped downloading GP. Will check this out though.

JimmyKane
03-07-2010, 10:42 PM
Thoughts on GP (as opposed to Sibelius, which I normally use)

First, things that piss me off (how do I stop these?):

-Bars aren't locked: they can have as many friggin notes each as you like, regardless of time signature. All it does is have the little thing saying "Incomplete bar" or "bar exceeded". What's worse is when you copy shit into a bar it doesn't remove the appropriate notes to make the space, you have to do it yourself.
-Apparent lack of ornaments. I'm guessing there are a few more in there somewhere, but I found I wanted a tenuto at one point and couldn't easily find one. I've never used a mordent or any of that shit anyway, it's probably easier to write out how it would actually be played.
-Copy/paste copying/pasting too much, including time signatures and repeats. Most often annoying.

Things I like:

-Copy/paste copying/pasting too much. Occasionally useful.
-Preventing shit overlapping on the screen. THE most annoying thing with Sibelius is having a dynamic thingo, crescendo, palm-muting line etc all sitting on top of each other, with a sixteenth note beam jutting out into the mess. Guitar Pro keeps everything very clean and visible.
-(obvious) Better guitar-related features i.e. bends, hammers ons, effects which are clunky or missing from Sibelius.

BB2K
03-07-2010, 11:12 PM
I prefer GP to Sibelius. They both run like ass on my computer, but GP less than Sibelius.

JimmyKane
03-07-2010, 11:17 PM
It's a sexy bit of software, more appealing to me than Powertab, Sibelius or Finale. Will have to try Tuxguitar though.

Also, I wrote the lyrics of what was supposed to be a melodic death metal song on the last day of school. I got home and wrote some music... and it's the best thing I've ever done. Turned out more jazz metal, the extended chords were flowing freely.

I never even look in here but I may as well ask, I'm learning some tapping at the moment (playing Clamato Fever, the menu music from SSF2THD, and it has tapping around 1:20 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRL_3zVmV0I) in). Anyone know any good tapping exercises?

I've got the hang of it but now I just need to do the hours of practice part.

I think the tapping in that is hitting the F on the e string with your right hand and hammering A#,C,C#, and then moving your right hand up to F#, but I'm probably wrong, my music theory/ear is awful.

(And **** if I know what the bit after the tapping is)

I've recently found a love for playing surf guitar. For me it's the perfect style to play because it's easy as hell (I'm generally a pretty poor lead player), and more importantly it sounds pretty cool too. I love surf tone, and the fact that most surf songs are instrumentals means that they are guitar-focused so it's a great way for me to improve my lead playing.

Well I have recently acquired a bass from my brother's friend who's lending it to us. I don't have a bass amp so I'm just gonna use it through my old guitar amp (don't want to risk damaging my new one's speaker). Does anyone know any exercises, particularly for my right hand (I want to learn how to play fingerstyle well). Also any songs I should learn as a beginner (bear in mind I'm not a total beginner because I would have spent a couple of hours playing on my friend's bass, that and my skills from guitar have translated over reasonably well).

Some classic bass lines to learn..

Billie jean - mj
Another one bites the dust - queen
Money - pink floyd
Suck my kiss - chilli peppers.

In terms of right hand exercises just try to always alternate your plucking between your two fingers. Run through some scales etc.

I'd assume that it'd simply be a matter of replacing the power cable at the back of the amp with an Australian one (one from any kind of amp should work). I'm just guessing though so I may be wrong.

Edit: also why are you importing? I'd imagine shipping charges for something with speakers would be quite large.

Kool. Have you checked out the Fender Champion 600? It seems quite similar and it's also very popular. Also I have a Fender Super Champ which was around 550. Because it kind of seems gimmicky.Yeah, it's pretty gimmicky... It makes an amazing array of sounds (and the feature where you can plug an external sound source through its filter is AWESOME) but it's hard to get the tone generator / oscillator to play in concert pitch I've found. Not impossible, but nor is it super easy.

I REALLY would have liked it if they put some 'notches' in the pitch knob because as it stands you have to:

1) play a note on the keyboard and then turn the knob until that note is exactly in pitch
2) play a different note and check that it's also in tune. If not then you have to adjust the thing on the back with a screwdriver
3) be super steady with your keyboard finger because the keyboard is actually a pitch slider too, meaning if your finger is right in the middle of a key the pitch will be slightly different than if you move it 1mm off the centre. This also means you have to be super accurate when playing melodies on the keys as just one bad placement can ruin the whole phrase!

Still I so far haven't needed to adjust the screw in the back, so it's more just steps 1 and 3 that I worry about.

Anybody else played around with weird guitar tunings? I'm going through a bit of a phase at the moment, mainly inspired by this song's tuning:
QYSKc0NOMXI
I'm finding these pretty fun to make up and play around with. I've already written (and kinda recorded) a song in open D (DADF#AD if I remember right). Right now my guitar's in open Emaj7 (EG#BG#BD#) and I'm working on a little something. My songwriting's been feeling a bit stagnant in E standard since I'm getting to know all my scales, modes, chord extensions etc and thinking too much about how it's theoretically "supposed" to sound. It all seems a bit easier in different tunings.

Anybody know of some cool strange tunings?

Allick
02-10-2010, 11:26 PM
Not too weird, but I spent a while messing around with open C6 (ECGCAC). It's the same tuning John Butler, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Jose Gonzalez (I think) use pretty often.

Just tried New Standard Tuning, which Robert Fripp uses.

CGDAEG

Didn't want to risk tuning up a major fourth to that E so just took it down to the A.

The G at the top broke the string though. ****. Not trying that again for a while.

I've got the place to myself today, so after a period of inactivity, the Maton Messiah has been unleashed. I bought it a decade or so ago after a big tax return windfall; its quality exceeds my ability, but damn it's got a great sound, and it's only getting better.

The day I bought it, I went into Allans just planning to browse and have a bit of a play around, but the Messiah caught my eye, and after playing it for about 20 minutes I was sucker-punched into buying it. I was hurting financially for a little while afterwards, but no regrets whatsoever.

I'm playing it semi-scoustically through my Korg Pandora effects box atm; gee it's gonna be hard to put down.

You can probably help me with something I've always been curious about. Inside the guitar, there's a sticker with the product details, and it says 'The Messiah' Selected Series No: 804 (of 1299).

Does this mean that there were only 1299 Messiahs made? Or is that only for that particular year, or production run?

sheeps
19-11-2010, 01:40 PM
Not sure. I'd dare say there's more than 1299 Messiahs though, pretty sure they were the go to guitar for Maton endorsees for a while.

Ordered an MXR '74 Phase 90 reissue from the US a few days ago and it should be here this week some time. After playing with my friend's EHX Small Stone I've really been craving a phaser. It was only $150 including shipping from the US which is pretty good considering they go for around $250 here in Australia. Hopefully it'll put an end to my effects pedal craving for a while.

I'm thinking of buying a semi-acoustic bass, but don't know too much about them, in terms of brands, etc. I also play bass like I play the guitar, so I don't want to drop too much on one while I'm still learning the ropes. My limit would be $500, but I'd only want to spend that much if I was getting a good deal.

Any advice?

Oh yeah, I'm after a 4-string ideally, but a good 5-string cheap would be okay too.

My friend has an Ibanez Artcore bass which he seems to like. I've played around on it once for a little while and it had a nice unplugged sound, didn't get to try it plugged in unfortunately. I think these go for around 500 to 700. Other than that there aren't many options in terms of hollow body basses in that price range that I know of.

I ended up buying one not too dissimilar; it's an Ibanez AEB10E, picked it up second hand. It has a really nice, warm tone and it's projected pretty well acoustically in the couple of jams I've had. Having a ball with it, and my fingers are callousing up a treat.

Vocals aren't half bad. Started out giving me the image of four hippie teenagers, so stoned off their faces that they couldn't play their instruments in time (or couldn't care less).

The intro is kind of ridiculous in the scale of the song. I love how the lead guitarist plays the solo like this -

5rkoatnn9kM

The song gets much better after that initial intro. I was waiting for another crazy genre change into classical or something though with a bad solo to seal the deal.

Not a bad effort!

I don't really know much about non-'metal' guitars, but since no-one else is around - what kind of stuff do you intend on playing?

Allans Music have a decent variety of guitars on their site to browse.

I'm looking at buying a realsies guitar, but not sure what I'm going to grab. I liked the idea of a Gibson Les Paul, but it just doesn't feel as good as playing a strat. I'm not that interested in sound, since I spend 99% of my time playing unplugged, so feel is pretty important to me. Might head into Allans/Cranbourne Music and make a day of it tomorrow arvo.

I wouldn't be much help to you SOX, other than saying that don't get anything fancy like a floating tremolo or locks if its the only electric you're going to have, better off getting something more standard. Maybe try one of those epiphone les pauls?

After a bit of research the Pacifica seems like the one best suited to my needs but I got distracted by the basses (that's what I actually play atm) and now I'm trying to justify dropping $1100 on a Fender Deluxe Active Jazz...

EDIT: it's $750 from the US but Fender doesn't let you import internationally :'(

Rambo
29-06-2011, 10:14 PM
