Ok people I don't want this to turn into a shitfight but it probably will so I'm hoping the information I need will come quickly before the tacks start spitting.

Long story short, I want to burst forth and get a Xbox 360 or PS3 and I need to know which one will best suit my needs.

The one thing the PS3 has over the 360 is wireless out of the box. But the 360 is definitely cheaper with the latest bundles attesting to that.

Does the Xbox need to be hooked up to the internetweb? I have a wireless router at home so gettin the 360 hooked up to ethernet cable will just be a hassle.

I'm torn between the both of them but the PS3 is marginally ahead on points due to wireless and of course blu-ray.

Help me decide!!

What type of games do you want to play?

RPGs mainly and triple AAA titles such as Far Cry 2, Bioshock etc.

Batman AA will probably be one.

Should also say I have a Xbox and some excellent titles and am currently awaiting Morrowind GOTY in the post. The 360s BC is a good feature as well.

Shit what do I do?

Plus Unchartered 2 is apparently Jesus incarnate as well (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps3/uncharted2amongthieves)

Well what type of RPGs then, Western or JRPG ones? Or is either fine?

Also some multiplatform AAA titles do perform better on 360 than PS3, and some vice verse, so you might want to check out exactly what titles you want to buy and see which console they do better on. That said, either way you'll still get some great games.

Lost Odyssey and Mass Effect are worth getting a 360 for alone, IMO anyway.

Oh and XBLA is pretty much unrivalled.

Dude, play FPS on PC.

If you want a BluRay player and have a TV capable of playing back at 1080p, then definitely go for a PS3. You really should have your 360 connected online for the best experience, and you can buy a ridiculously expensive wifi adaptor, but you don't need it to be. Personally I'd probably still go for a 360 based on the volume of games and better exclusives.

Oh, and if this thread turns into a fanboy shitstorm, it will be locked. Also, probably didn't need a whole thread.

They're both good, I think potentially PS3 is better value for you because of the inbuilt wireless (saving you $100+ or a cable) and blu-ray (assuming you'll use it). Having said that if you have friends with 360's then get that so you can online with them. I don't think either console has a huge advantage in titles, although most rpg's are on the 360 (PS3 is getting Tales of Vesperia soonish but both will have FFXIII).

Oh and XBLA is pretty much unrivalled.

Also worth noting that this costs money, which is worth noting if you only use it for occasional demos/updates.

Another plus is PS3 is (game) region free if you're looking for reasonably obscure games.

It all comes down to what games you want to play though. We can't do your research for you there.

Western RPGs but I do like the stuff coming out of the former Eastern Bloc (STALKER w/Oblivion Lost, Witcher) as well.

Japanese not so enamoured.

I clicked PS3 without even thinking, do you mean RPG's or JRPG's?

*edit*
Just read your above post ...... PS3 is starting to get a lot more JRPG support.
If you want western RPG's I guess both consoles are still worth looking at. I mean PS3 still has Alpha Protocol, DC Universe Online, Demon's Souls, Dragonage, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Sacred 2 going for it. Your only really missing out on Mass Effect I guess.

Tried it on PC and HATED it.

PS3 is slowly gathering momentum with me at the moment.

If this is the case, then buy a PS3.

I voted for Xbox 360 though. Firefights this Friday and Saturday night.

Personally, I would recommend PS3 as most 360 'exclusives' come out (and play better IMO) on PC eventually.

The 360 is a fantastic machine but it will probably die and break your heart.

The PS3 is really coming along now, developers are getting the hang of the hardware, the blu ray player is a nice bonus if you have the TV to support it, even dvds will upscale to look better.

Plus some of the extra crap you might need (bigger hard drive, headset, hdmi cable etc) you won't need to buy overpriced proprietry versions. With built in wireless and free online (yet slightly clumsier than the 360) gaming plus being region free for games it's a great console with an interesting future.

This post was brought to you by Sony... wait no, it might sound like a commercial but I genuinely believe the PS3 is a great buy.

While the 360 has a fantastic selection of games at retail, the marketplace/xbox live really open up the experience.

The PS3 has some brilliant exclusives, and while multiplatform titles generally wind up worse off than their 360 counter-parts the gap doesn't seem to be as large as it was a year or two ago. There are also some awesome games on the PSN. It's also worth mentioning that Sony definitely have the strongest exclusive offering this year with Uncharted 2.

I'd recommend the PS3 due to its built in wireless if you're not willing to shell out for a wireless adapter or wireless bridge of some sort for the 360. If, however, you'd be willing to pick up a wireless adapter even a month or two down the line, I'd say go with the 360, it's definitely brought me the most joy this gen.

Pretty much what this guy says, especially since you have a PC capable of playing games (or so I have gathered).

Also so you can get The Last Guardian when it is released, I've already named it the game of this gen because I'm an idiot fanboy.

But maybe you should wait a few days and see if anything catches your eye at TGS, might help you decide.

Unless there's an exclusive on XBOX you really want Id go for the PS3 this late in the game. For the Blu-ray. This assumes you have a nice 1080 TV to play on.

Either way though you're going to have fun. We all know the strengths and weaknesses of both systems. Weigh em up, decide what's most important for you and go buy.

I dont know any unhappy xbox360 or PS3 owners. Just unhappy wii owners (btw buy Punch-out its great!!!!).

You should be able to find a 360 wireless thingit online for $100 or less (I managed $80) and I predict a price cut for it before Christmas anyway, hopefully asap. (from it's insulting rrp of au$150)

Big W has an 120g Elite + Halo ODST + Call of Duty 5 deal for under $400 coming this week apparently. If you got this, plus the wireless, you are getting a better deal than the $500 PS3 slim unless you want in on that money-pit white-elephant of Blu Ray. Want to buy all your DVDs again for $25-$40 for an imperceptible resolution increase?

Want to buy all your DVDs again for $25-$40 for an imperceptible resolution increase? On a 46 inch Bravia XBR8 I have no trouble telling the difference.

I wouldnt suggest people rebuy stuff they already own. Especially with upscaling. But if there's something coming out worth buying then Id say only get it on Blu-Ray. Dark Knight was $31 at Big W week one. The DVD was around $26. YOu better believe the Blu-ray was worth the extra bucks.

Bought Coraline from Amazon. The blu-ray set included the DVD version on a separate disc. nothing beats a direct comparison. Id think most people upon viewing both would have a clear preference.

Sure some people swear they cant tell the difference. My mum for example.

Laughed the other day when I noticed my brother has all his stuff hooked up via composite. The HD experience has arrived

Those people need to understand what FULL HD means. Enjoy no difference on your old LCD/Plasma.

Blu-Ray is fine and dandy, but VHS just has more warmth, character and liveliness to it.

Does anyone here actually use the 100hz/ 200hz 'motion flow' settings on their LCD tvs when watching movies? Does some weird shit. Makes everything look like a HD home video.

SONY pushes MOTIONFLOW yet you pretty much cant have it switched on when playing games. Unless large input lag is something you desire. Ah marketing .....

"For the ultimate gaming experience turn off the 200Hz motionflow and hook your PS3 up via the supplied composite cables"

If he gets a PS3 then play-asia is also a good place to buy an extra DualShock3. Cheaper and more colours (Black, white, red, blue)

Unless you are just getting a console for the sake of it, figure out what you want to play. List some games, and then find the system that applies.

My friend has a similar thing activated on his massive Sony LCD and I actually find it quite distracting. The smoothness of the movement feels really unnatural when watching movies. I don't really understand why people have it on.

Indeed, but I can't deny the usefulness of a Blu-Ray as a peep hole in a fort door.

Plus there's the upcoming motion control stuff like the Sony wand/dildos and Microsoft's Project Natal.

Now the Wii has shown us that it's mostly gimmicky crap but motion control can sometimes be done right.

Sony's looks promising but I'd like to see something beyond tech demos, I'm not quite convinced on Natal, the imaginary peripherals just doesn't sit right with me.

like others have said, make a shortlist of current and future titles you want to buy. that will help you decide. also i believe xbox live accounts for half the xbox experience, so if you're too cheap to buy the wireless adapter then you won't get as much out of your box. i would recommend getting one even if you had to wait a couple months.

for me the decision to buy a 360 was easy but the ps3 is still an impressive system and with the price cuts well worth it imo.

I went with 360 because in my house it gets used a LOT more. Like 10:1 more.

Of course I don't have that many PS3 games, mostly just the exclusives, so I tend to play the PS3 for a while whenever a good exclusive comes out and then it sits unused for 2-3 months.

I would say 360 by default (although my new shiny PS3 is pretty nice) but considering you have been playing a bit of the monolith Xbox then I would definetly say go with the 360 as the BC makes the original Xbox games look really nice.

Hmm, very good point; I didn't know BC actually improved the graphics of old games.

Definitely a plus.

Yeah it's software emulated so they can make them run at a higher res, but there is a compatibility list you should check to see if what you want to play actually works.
