View Full Version : Fifa '10
Geez, I'm a bit confused, because from my fifteen or hours playtime it is quite a superior product to '09 in almost all respects (I logged around 40 hours on '09). And if it were anyone other than Gunner suggesting that it had lost ground I'd probably be inclined to write it off as the ravings of a mad Arsenal supporter, but the man has logged some time with both, and knows his bloody Fifa. Hmmm. Perhaos, as you seem to be suggesting Cian, the inadequacies reveal themselves over time. Problem for me is I need to finish the bloody review I'm writing of it, so luxury of time is not something I necessarily have. :(
And the lag is ridiculous.
I was watching my brother play some online last night and it seemend fine to me.

That's exactly what I'm suggesting. The more you play, the more faults you find. But by far the biggest problem is the goalkeepers. At least last year they could make basic saves and hold onto the ****ing ball. They've improved the offensive side of things, no doubt about that...but defensive howlers are far too common. It seems as though I'm the only one complaining here...has anyone else experienced problems?

The patch released last night seems to have improved online team play, but 1 v 1 ranked games still aren't as good as they can be. I kept getting disconnected from those wonderful EA servers.

My question remains Cian, do you guys have a problem with the football or just the managerial/achievement aspect of the game? I'm interested to know what your beef is aside from not getting achievements.
Both, but mainly the football. The goalkeepers have gone back four years in terms of AI. All the random goalkeepers in Clubs are no more than 5'5. Goalkeepers can't make regulation catches. They rush off their line too much. Passing is inconsistent. Fouls (especially with the A button) are given away too easily. Hitting the post is still far too common, happens twice in every game.
And the lag is ridiculous.

Thanks for the reply and explanation Cian. Like I've posted before, I haven't really gotten into this game as much as I would have liked atm so perhaps my opinion is not as informed as yours. You say the faults take time to recongnise.
Here's my take on your issues:
Goalkeepers make a few errors, I have noticed this also. The main issue I have with them is, as you say, they don't catch the ball nearly enough. Thraxas and I noticed this particularly in online play. I could imagine how annoying that would be when you have something riding on the game, like a managerial mode. Or if this flaw could be exploited, I haven't been able to yet.
My defense doesn't make howlers in the world class exhibition games I play so far, what howlers are you referring to? Sometimes they have difficulty recognising and protecting against a run for a throughball however.
Passing seems fine to me aside from through balls do not always go where you want/expect them to go if passing centrally. PES was/is much better than this. Can't say how it compares to Fifa 09. I can string a great deal of passes together with Barca with patience.
Goal keepers rushing off the line, do you know there is a button to make them stay on the line?
I'm not trying to make myself out to be an amazing player, I'm sure you're better at this game than me, but I hardly ever foul when tackling. Thraxas can hopefully back me up on this, I very rarely gave away a free kick and didn't receive any cards (although I did give away that kick for the stupid Ronaldo goal). I tackle like I do in real football, mainly use run and jostle to get my body in position before I tackle. I really like what jostling has done for the tackling aspect of the game. Slide tackling I can't comment on, I don't do that much.
Hitting the post may happen a lot. If it does I would attribute this to the fact shots are less powerful than I would expect, even at very close distances, you really need to get that ball in the corner to score, hence post-hitting?
If what you say about 5'5 goalkeepers are true and not an exaggeration then that is a silly mistake to be left (funny though).
Lag is unplayable online (for me), but it was in PES too, dunno about Fifa 09. Against Thraxas though it was great.
So that's my initial impressions. Look forward to any response from Cian or anyone else. PES10 will still be an amazing game if this game is as flawed as Cian claims.
Defensive Howlers: Mainly in relation to Online Club games. The opposition will have their own virtual pros playing as attackers....against a defence rating of 70, it's very unbalanced. Fifa 10 works well when you can use your strength to muscle players off the ball, but it doesn't work like that when a defender who's rating is 70 is trying to deal with a striker who's rating is 90.
The custom tactics option is also being abused at corner kicks. You can put almost your entire team on the goal line causing heaps of confusion and deflections and inevitably, lots of goals.
Goal Keepers: Apparently double tapping Y stops them from coming off the line. It rarely works for me because I'm concentrating on positioning my defenders and by the time I check the radar and see the keeper running out like a fool, it's usually too late (especially against experienced players).

Okay that makes sense. Haven't played online much.

Weird. Will try to do this and see how it works. Must be a counter for this surely.

Fair enough. I would imagine it would be hard to make your keeper stay on the line like that. It seems like your issues are a few niggly flaws that can be exploited and therefore gamebreaking? Particularly online. Anyway, I'll play this a bit more and let you know what I think.
BTW anyone have any advice on crosses? Mine are really shit and normally too close to the keeper. Yes I know double tap (weird, exactly the same as PES! Ha ha)

What's not exactly the same as PES is you can't place a perfect cross at full speed with defenders on your arse. There's one PES habit I had to shake off for this game. ;)
Here are three steps I follow for the best possible cross:
1. Get clear of defenders
2. Slow down as much as possible before kicking
3. Make sure you're kicking off the strong foot
Accomplishing just one of these steps will improve the cross. All three should make it go exactly where you want.
Also, I don't bother double-tapping anymore. I just press the button once and hold it down to control the distance. I do cross along the ground occasionally if it's appropriate (triple-tap, just like PES! :p).

Passing is inconsistent? You'll probably have to go into more detail with that one.
Fouls are more realistic, and punish charging in from the back and sides. The ref plays advantage most of the time, which is pleasant. Hitting the post does not happen in every game, let alone twice.
Maybe, just MAYBE, you need to pass, tackle and shoot better. Maybe.

If I can figure it out (and get around to it), maybe I'll start a comp like UC1 did with top five goals from Hyper members or something.
And I'll play both of you too! I'm kinda keen to see how other forum members play the game. First up though, a rematch with Thraxas...

I've only just started playing live, but would a "Fifa evening" be a good idea, whereby we're all on at the same time and everyone plays each other? Do they do that for Forza here or something? That would be sweet.

The hyper/fifa community is burgeoning! Hooray!
With good reason too. This is a game you can keep improving with time, possibly indefinitely. You can use many of the same principles of real football as you do in the game. For example, patience, waiting for overcommital then taking advantage. I was using this a lot with good success against online players, exactly what I do in real soccer (when my bloody teammates can be patient enough :P )
Alright, so which tricks have people incorporated into their game successfully on a regular basis? Atm all I have managed is the fake shot, which I am learning to use pretty well nowadays after my transition to PES (although they did rip it straight from there :P ).
I've been really trying to implement the long first touch using the right stick but still finding it difficult to use consistently after my limited playing time.
And if you brag about tearing it up with a move, then you need to use it online!
If anyone wants a game tonight, send me a message. I'll probably be playing SFIV or Forza 3, but hit me up and wait for two minutes while I change discs, and we'll get a game or three going.
My tag is 'Blue AUS'.
EDIT: Proof, I found the first touch to be much more exploitative in the last game. You could easily use it to tear away from a defender and leave them wrong-footed, whereas in this game, it can leave the ball in no-man's land if you're not more careful. I'm still trying to get used to it, as I was able to dribble around my mates last year, but need more practice this time around.

In the last 20 minutes of the second game, it lagged every single time you entered my defensive half. It's hard enough trying to defend a 1-0 lead without having to fight the lag as well!
Third game, there was an early incident where Sikora broke away and was through on goal, and only had to pass the ball to Sterjovski for an easy tap-in. He got run down because the game started lagging. Actually, for the first 20 minutes of that game, it lagged every time I entered your defensive half!
Fourth game, I was 2-1 up and you entered my defensive half and the game literally FROZE. Seriously, I was trying to defend and it stopped dead. When it started again, you got through, crossed the ball, and it froze again! When it started again you headed the ball in for a goal.
And don't even get me started on that game where, within one minute, two players had shots at a wide open goal from 2m out and they both hit the post!

I can see what Cian was complaining about re: guys hitting the post, but honestly I think that's the kind of glitch that only happens with slightly dodgy connections. I certainly had no problems with shots hitting the post when the game ran smoothly. Bad connections may also result in passes not going where they're supposed to, but when the connection's good there's no problems at all. I've also never had a problem with goalies running off their line when I didn't command them to, lag or no lag.

Still can't dominate in world class mode like I could in PES, but maybe that's a good thing.
Jostling and 360 degree dribbling are 2 of the greatest implementations in a football game, or sporting game, possibly ever.

Trust me, it's a really good thing. You have to be on the ball in every game, and if you start slacking off or getting lazy, any team can step up and surprise you. You may be cruising along as a rich juggernaut, and all of a sudden a minnow steps up to beat you because you showed them no respect.
It's just like real life and it's more challenging and fun as a result. Pro Evo is boring because you can go through and flog every team in every comp 6-0. No real life team has ever been that good, and no virtual team should be that good either.
Don't expect to ever dominate world class mode like you did in Pro Evo. Oh sure, you can win most of your games, win trebles and quadruples and such, but you're certainly gonna have to fight for it. :p

fearofthesky- What was the story with that own goal in the last game? That must have been heartbreaking!
On another note, I had lots of fun playing as Tottenham. Did you notice how hard I was trying to score a goal with Peter Crouch at the end? I think he's useless and as such a goal from him would have been the ultimate humiliation IMO. :p

haha yeah I'm not sure about that one, I was just trying to clear and kept hitting X. Somehow kicked it into my own damn net. Bah! I'm getting a lil better, still need to vary the pace a bit more. Going flat out too often dauses me lots of turnovers it seems.

Yeah, when I first converted from Pro Evo to FIFA I just went flat out all the time. After a while I realised that you had to slow it down a bit to get the best results.
For example, in Pro Evo, I never used to pass it among my defenders! Never ever! I'd just grab the ball and pound it up the middle and it worked. In FIFA, I pass it among my defenders a lot more in order to slow down the game, set up play from the backline, pick real gaps in the formation and all that. You may have noticed a particularly epic bit of backline passing in one of our games... I wish I'd plugged in the headset so you could hear me saying "half-back, passes to center, back to wing, back to center... center holds it... holds it... holds it..." :p

Yeah we'll get the headsets out next time for sure. Good games. The instinct to slide tackle hard is the main thing I've bought over from playing Pro Evo 2008. Its not quite as effective in FIFA, and leaves the defender a much longer way out of position.
Also in PES08, you could just throw the ball straight in with the keeper and your players would always jog over and get it. You can't do that in this! I ****ed that up a few times in our games...it was what led to my own goal. :(

Yeah, you scared me with some of those slide tackles! It was like 'lalalalalaaaa, march to the goal... OH SHIT didn't see that coming!' :p
Also, you reminded me of one bit where your keeper threw it straight to my guy. I eased up because I thought you were gonna take a second and pass it to someone, and when my guy got it I was literally fumbling for the controller! Then it was too late for a tap-in so I tried running around him and screwed it up.

Yeah, keeper throwouts don't baby you as much as PES. I think this is a good thing personally as it allows more freedom once you get used to it but does contribute to a lot of mistakes during the transition phase. Allows for some nice outlet passes.

Being able to charge the throw is fantastic. I hated how Pro Evo only let you roll it out to the nearest guy. I remember watching Real one day and seeing Casillas throwing it over-arm to the side backs and thinking 'that should be in the game!' :p

I tried it in a couple of random games and won them both. The first was an epic comeback in overtime against Liverpool (2 all at the end of the game, he scored in overtime to make it 3-2, but I scored two goals before the break for a 4-3 win!). The second was a 1-0 win in a Real Madrid vs Real Madrid match, and it was interesting to see how we could get two totally different lineups from the same team. He/she probably laughed when they saw Gago starting on the right wing, but I showed him/her! :p

And in case Cian is interested...
Shots hitting the post- Nope. All the shots that hit the post look like they should have.
Passes not going where they're supposed to- Nope, nothing worse than what you get in an offline game anyway.
Defensive miscommunications- Nope, not on my end anyway.
Clearly, all the problems you were having with the game are caused purely by bad connections (because I've also experienced them in games with massive lag). Too bad you can't search for opponents according to latency, or EA didn't make the servers better, then there'd be no problems.

I found a small flaw with FIFA's online play.
You can't play unless you sign in to EA's server. However, even though the Internet is working and Live is working perfectly, grimace and I were unable to sign in to it. So just because EA's server is down, it means that we can't play each other.
Couldn't they have put in an option to play against people on your friends list without having to sign in, just for situations like this? I know that would mean no roster updates, but surely you could trust a friend to not bring in a created superman or a custom superteam?

Pathetic, eh? When I was really concentrating on my rank, nothing was more frustrating than getting disconnected. I was beating a guy 6-0 in Fifa 09 only to be disconnected in stoppage time. He got a win and I got a loss. Bullshit.

Some Fifa-related achievement confusion.
Today in Manager Mode I finished a season after playing every game and winning three trophies. Yet I got neither achievement.
I don't know why - but I think it might be because I left the game on for a while a few times and my controller went flat, giving me the "don't change teams or you wont get an achievement" message - but the thing is I didn't change teams.
autologic
23-12-2009, 12:07 AM
but when the controller goes flat doesn't it go back to the middle bit where you aren't on either team? Maybe if you select the same team again it still processes that as changing teams.

Turns out "The Treble" achievement has to be won in a top tier league.

I wish you could choose to search opponents by latency. I'm sick of having matches which disconnect in the first half due to a bad connection, or matches where the lag between pressing the pass button and actually passing results in turning the ball over, or passing out to the middle of nowhere because you were hammering the button.
Seriously, every match I get is one bar. Where are all the two and three bar connections? Maybe I should try playing during the day and hope for some Aussie connections...

If you make the refs perfect you kinda take away the realism. ;)

New World Cup game announced. Obviously will use the FIFA 11 engine with some tweaks and gameplay enhancements.
Taken from http://kotaku.com/5457775/ea-sports-confirms-fifa-world-cup-2010
• A gorgeous new pitch: Our pitch simply wasn't good enough, so we've made it look superb.
• Lighting of the players and environment: Clever changes to the lighting makes everything look more realistic.
• Camera flashes: You'll see all the fans in the crowd using their cameras.
• Seat cards: Fans hold up cards to form national flags and emblems in a show of patriotism.
• Fans: Close-up shots on supporters cheering on their team or despairing in anguish.
• Confetti rains down from the sky in the team colors and stays on the pitch all game.
• Streamers create a carnival atmosphere as they glide to the ground.
• Populated benches: Characters sit on the benches rather than being empty.
• Broadcast graphics: The same captions you've seen in FIFA tournament broadcasts.
• Close-up celebration camera: To really feel the goal-scoring moment, the camera zooms in close to the player as he responds to your celebration commands.
• New players and managers: More content for star heads and many of the team managers.[England national team manager Fabio] Capello looks brilliant, and [notoriously tall English footballer] Peter Crouch no longer looks like a naughty elf.
