Ugh... I feel dirty starting a thread about Fifa.

But I've been playing the demo of this latest version a great deal and I feel it's improved a lot. The 360 degree dribbling feels like a massive improvement, the jostling and the AI have all improved. I'm not quite sure how 360 degree dribbling works at the moment, but having had a bash on '09, '09 felt really stilted in comparison only having 8 directions of initial movement. Defensive AI is great, the defenders position them for double team opportunities when they arise without providing openings. Defenders get into annoying positions blocking runs but also having a foot in passing lanes.

I never got into '09 despite playing the demo a lot (at the suggestion of other posters). One of the issues I had with it (of many) is the defenders would continually back up against an onrushing ball carrier to ridiculous postions. This has been rectified.

The whole game feels vastly improved. One AI issue I have is defenders don't seem to account for throughballs. Also, presently I'm not always able to judge how far an opposing player can reach to tackle for the ball, so I get the ball taken off me on runs more than I would like. But this could just be because I'm unused to the control scheme.

But overall, it feels pretty sweet. At the moment, I will probably buy this over Pro Evo, the first time I have ever bought a Fifa game. As posted in the Pro Evo thread, I will be greatly saddened if it comes to that, but also excited to try a new football game.

Anyway, has anyone else played the demo? I thought with all you Fifa lovers out there, somebody would be raving about the improvements by now. You need Xbox Live Gold to download it.

Do many people play Fifa online? How does it fare? I'm interested in getting into it if it's better than Pro Evo's "nightcrawler" version.

Success!

And to answer your later question, Fifa is HUGE online....always lots of people playing it. Pre-ordered my copy today.

Yeah, FIFA has a really well-designed online infrastructure, and you'll always get good games. Very helpful, as I rarely play anything but online multi in many of my games nowadays.

I loved 08 at the time, but found 09 to be a solid improvement. I haven't played the 10 demo yet, but previews have filled me in on all the details. 360º movement is a drastic improvement.

You should give 10 ago. I even redownloaded '09 again to see if I'd got it wrong but I still didn't like it. 10 feels much better IMO. I still don't think I could play '09.

Have you downloaded the demo yet Cian? I know you haven't downloaded PES. Did you get a good deal on the Fifa pre-order or just the standard?

Me and my mate are talking about getting the PSP version also. Anyone play that? How's it rate comparatively?

I'm pretty keen to play online football now if the game runs well, I haven't played online games aside from a MMO game I gave up on. I'm very tempted to buy it on the PSP, the 360, then try to master it to (hopefully) dominate online.

One thing that turned me off online football is I played one guy on PES once who did this massive cheat formation where his whole side were defenders except Henry, then my team pushed up for offside, then he kept lobbing longballs for Henry to chase. He thrashed me lol, obviously a well practiced cheap ploy. I think I could have figured out a way to beat it if I messed around with formations and shit, but I couldn't be bothered. Hopefully there's nothing like that with Fifa online.

At least changes are being made in the most important area- gameplay. With EA Sports games, it used to be the other way around (massive interface updates but nothing on the gameplay front). :p

I wish I'd got to spend more time with 09. I tried a Manager Mode with Perth Glory, which sucked, and I didn't play it after that because there were too many other games to play at the time. I'm almost tempted to try Glory again now that the team is competitive, but I honestly cbf. I'm absolutely dying to have another epic Manager Mode as Real, and the wait between games has been unbearable (is is just me or is this game coming out 3 months later than last year?).

I haven't downloaded the demo yet due to my annoying download limit, but I had heaps of fun with 09 and with the new stuff they've put in and positive reactions to the demo I will certainly be picking this up come Oct 1. I had so much fun online with 09, definitely looking forward to this.

I only ever encountered something like that once, and I played 09 constantly online for a good 6 months. In my case some dude had managed to get Ronaldo, Ribery, Kaka and a bunch of other stars into his Barcelona side and you can't normally edit the teams like that online. It wasn't so bad though, I managed to get a goal up with only a minute or so to go and he rage quit. In fact that's probably the only real downside I found with playing online; if I went up 2 or more goals in the first half I'd get quite a few rage-quits. Although there are so many people who play online that it's no problem finding another game. I'm really not looking forward to every second ****er playing as Real Madrid this season though. It was bad enough with people constantly being Man U/Barca last year.

Personally, while that looks great, I'm always very skeptical about the effectiveness of tricks in soccer/basketball games. But hopefully I'm wrong, and some of these would be effective. The "bridge" move would be awesome if it works well, I use that move in real football all the time, it's invaluable. I'll try it on the demo.

Well, I've ordered Fifa 10 from EB because they give out a $25 discount off the second EA '10 game, and I intend to buy it on PSP also. It's out "officially" next Thursday.

It's a sad, sad day for me, purchasing Fifa over my beloved PES, probably my favourite videogaming series of all time (I love football), possibly tied with the Elder Scrolls series, but I said I'd play both demos with an open mind and IMO Fifa played the better football.

On the plus side, at least now I'll be able to join in communities, play football games with friends, etc, etc. Being a devout PES fan in a world full of Fifa is a lonely existence. None of my friends wanted to play PES with me, and when they did, they said it was shit lol, and I didn't like playing Fifa.

Sorry PES, I feel like a traitor, especially since Fifa ripped half their game from you, your programmers, your control system, etc, but I'll always have good memories of the countless, countless hours we've spent together. Maybe I'll buy both :/

But I am pretty damn excited about this Thursday :D

Can't wait for this. Comes out on the day my assignment is due so all is good :). Fifa Street 3 currently rotting on the shelf with the wrap still on!

I've had a look at achievments for FIFA 10 and a lot of them are very similar to FIFA 09. Also if you're an achievment whore, it looks like a good way of racking up a fair few is to start off with a 1 star team in division three or lower. Playing a game as a team from every leadgue may take a while as well o_o.

Some secret ones..

Time For a Testimonial - Play 500 matches with your virtual pro - 50g

I played FIFA 09 a lot but not this much o_o. I probably played 1 game in the Be-A-Pro mode!

I learned today that Huntelaar has already been traded away by RM, but Arbeloa has been signed!

Here's what I'm thinking re: starting lineup, with a 4-3-3.

GK: Casillas
RB: Sergio Ramos
CB: Metzelder
CB: Pepe
LB: Marcelo
DMF: M. Diarra
CMF: Xabi Alonso
AMF: Van Der Vaart
RW: C. Ronaldo
LW: Raul
CF: Van Nistelrooy

To think Benzema and Kaka are on the bench... also if it's a big cup game, I may go with a midfield of Alonso, Van Der Vaart and Kaka to blast the opposition with pure offensive talent.

Bad Loser - Select to quit and forfeit 5 xbox live matches when losing - 0g

I love it! If you see anyone with that achievement, refuse to play them!

TBH, there's a lot of players on the list (incl. Benzema) who I'm not too familiar with, so I'll probably book a full pre-season of games and try a bunch of different lineups just to see who goes where. In other words, everyone will get a chance to win starting spots. ;)

Also, Van Nistelrooy seems to get tired pretty easily, so if Benzema is his backup he'll still get heaps of game time. :p

On another note, damn you EA for making everyone stick to the street date!

I'd start definitely Benzema over Van Nistelrooy, I used to play Lyon a fair bit on 09 and he's awesome. Also, when I'd play as Real on 09 I always preferred Huntelaar, Higuain and Raul over Van Nistelrooy. He was great if you could get a bit of space in the box, but overall he got tired quick and is generally pretty slow.

Had a choice between review copies of this and Ultimate Alliance 2 today, decided to go with Fifa 10 despite being shit at '09.

Have to say, for a person who doesn't know much about soccer, this is a huge improvement over what was already a very good game. Not only because the disc is packed with tutorial videos, but because everything just feels....right. It's like watching an actual game of soccer, and the new 360-degree controls are fantastic.

I'm probably the least knowledgeable person in the thread about the actual sport (I enjoy watching it but know bugger all about tactics/teams/players), but I'm very impressed with Fifa 10 thus far.

Jickle, stop trying to steal Mr M's mantle... HA HA HA HA HA!!!

Er, sorry I'm joking, just excited about Fifa coming out. EB wouldn't let me get a copy today, but it's okay coz me and a mate are going to go in and get it tomorrow on 360, PSP, and also possibly GT on PSP because he's getting a PSP go also. Seems like it's all coming out at once!

Van Nistelroy used to be awesome but I haven't heard from him for a while. If I were going as Real I'd probably start him and Benzema. VN would be a great player to bring in as a goal scoring supersub however like a Solskaer type player or Inzahgi.

For those that don't know Benzema, here's the scoop - he's going to be an absolute superstar. I dunno what his stats are on '10 but if autologic's correct then this year he should be much better than 09. So two footed with a zidane-esque touch. I think he scored a brace the other week in La Ligue.

And don't worry Jickle! You gotta start somewhere. You could probably learn the game through videogames to be honest. The physics in football games are so good nowadays you use many of the same principles in RL. Soccer's based on physics just like everything else, so it's not hard to pick up. Good that you can appreciate the game without knowing a lot about football!

Hooray! Only one more day to wait, because I'm getting bloody sick of Barca vs Chelsea and having to restart the game every 5 mins or so (on the demo).

I hope the PSP version is decent.

He was really good in FIFA 08, but maybe that was more due to my playing style. I prefer having at least one striker on the field who can genuinely contest the ball in the air and score headers off crosses. That's why I was planning to have either Van Nistelrooy or Benzema at CF at any one time (the Pro Evo demo suggests that Benzema is good through the air).

You could probably learn the game through videogames to be honest.

I gave it a crack tonight, and spent all my time playing with my 'pro' (who is a pale dude with shaggy white hair, piercing blue eyes and a constant angry look... his name is Buffalo Bill), which was an interesting way to play the game. While annoying that, as a striker, I had no control over my defence, the satisfaction you get from being in the right position and taking advantage of a good play to score a goal is much higher than in your 'standard' game.

I also tried mucking around with the skills, but they're a little tough to pull off, especially during a match. Do top players of fifa actually use these skills?

Manny M, I very rarely used tricks in Pro Evo. HOWEVER, some were invaluable. The fake shot for instance was a must have, and it feels the same way in Fifa. I'll let you know how much I use these on Fifa when I actually get the game, I have a feeling I'll be posting in this thread a lot. In saying this, I hope to master this game, and any trick that improves my game I will try to incorporate.

Also, it's not really a "trick" but learn to stop the ball dead. In the Fifa demo, it feels situational as to which button you need to press which I do not like. NBA Live does the same thing. In sport, it doesn't matter which way you're facing, a move is a move.

That gives me an idea. I feel like having a bunch of Live games, but just to make things interesting (and remove all the 'wah everyone plays as Barca/Man U/Real' complaints) we should make it 'A-League teams only'.

If you feel you've got what it takes to face the might of Perth Glory, PM me your username and I'll add you.

EDIT: I also hope everyone ponied up 80pts for the Spanish Mexican commentary track. What my friends and I do, to avoid repetitive team selection, is pick a star rating at the team select screen, and then we each keep pressing random, selecting whichever teams of that rating appear first. That way, we'll be playing with two, say, four-star squads that we have no idea about, or having an even 2 1/2 star tussle. It not only keeps things fairly even, but also more interesting.

I already sent you a request (my username is Kalmageddon2007). I'm relying on you to pass on the names of the other FIFA players if they don't PM me themselves/put it in their sig. ;)

Probably a 'duh!' question, but would it be possible/easier to start up our own league for this?

Should be. I was wondering who the hell Kalmageddon2007 was! :p Thought it was another hopeless random from Halo :P.

I wasn't sure if you wanted me to set up a league Mr_M so I did it, hope that's alright.

Yeah, I was holding Y to make him dive on the ball but it cued up a throughball. That's what caused that match losing error. :(

But I agree, they were both great games and I'm just glad to know that I can go blow-for-blow with Hyper's best. It gives me a nice confidence boost heading into our A-League league... ;)

I'm greatly enjoying this game also. So pretty to play. 360 degrees and the jostling system have taken the game to the next step. Just wish I had more time to play it! But have some time off soon.

For anyone looking to buy, as I've posted previously, EB offers pricematch and $25 off the next EA 10 game. Can give to a friend to get into Fifa also!

Edit: As another poster posted, best price I could find was Kmart for $86 but they also had it for PSP for $40. With EBs pricematch I got both for $101.

Tried a couple of games of this on live last night. First game was sweet, I won 5-1 even though I was pretty terrible, the other guy was worse (maybe suffering from lag). Second game really shitted me off though, I lost 2-0 and everytime I tried to dodge out the way when he went into a tackle, the lag meant I was too slow and lost the ball in dangerous areas.

I'm only on live for a 1 month trial, but is it always like this? Can you choose lagfree games? And if you play people in Australia, will that mean the game is lag-free?

Also just curious, where were you playing Kaka and Ronaldo? I noticed Kaka pretty far back most of the time. He was awesome as an insanely fast striker in 09. Now give him back!

In the first game I played Ronaldo as a striker and Kaka as a Right Midfielder. In the second game I tried Ronaldo at Attacking Midfielder and Kaka was in the same spot IIRC. Real Madrid's lineup is extremely flexible though, so sometimes I have Ronaldo on the wing and Kaka at AMF, or if I play my 4-3-3 (which I might try next time just for something different) Kaka can play as a Wing Forward, and so on.

You want Kaka back? How about Kaka for Huntelaar? Nah screw that, Kaka's too important to my team! :p

I rarely found lag to be a major problem with 09. I would get the odd game where it was bad but for the most part things were fine, and I don't have a great connection either.

Anyway, I played a couple of online games today. Won them both by comfortable margins, although my opponent wasn't too flash.

I'm starting to get frustrated by this game, the flaws and bugs are getting to me >_<. Playing in the third division of a league on World Class is very bloody difficult, not helped by the fact your players can barely play one and a half games in a row without being absolutely stuffed, making you rely on players with ratings no higher than 40! I know it is supposed to be difficult but what hope do you have when you're playing hacks on the field every third week combined with the fact it is impossible to sign players until you get a decent reputation!

They have a pretty good team though. I think all the A-League teams are better in this game than the previous ones (mainly because they don't seem to be scaling down the stats anymore, ie. playing in a lower standard league means your physical stats and finishing are automatically a lower standard too), so there's no better time to play as them!

I understand that, but it was also cutting out and going static which didn't help. :p

On another note, one of my online games was against a guy who was playing as Leeds United. I won 2-0 as Real Madrid, but he played well and had some good shots on goal. I have to admit, I have a certain respect for people who play as their favourite team no matter how shit they are.

But in the next game, the opponent's fave team came up as Everton and he played as Chelsea instead! And to make matters worse, he had the nerve to call himself 'toffeeman'! Toffeeman my arse! I decided that I had to beat this guy for all those true fans who stick by their favourite team, and fortunately I won 2-0. :)

Also, I dunno if it was the same game, but one of them was raining so heavily that my opponent had a shot on goal, it was on target and a guaranteed goal, but the ball slowed down and stopped before going in! Played Cian 4 times, got 2 points of a possible 12 and I was lucky to get those two. I have brought shame to my city. :(

I haven't grabbed it yet, but is it easier to score from set pieces such as corners and free kicks? In our year with 09, none of us has ever scored from a free kick, and very rarely scored from a corner. It's also quite hard to score with a header off a lofted cross. It's better than having a set piece mean a guaranteed goal like it used to be back in 03, but it would be nice if occasionally you could actually score from one. So, how is it in 10, anyway?

I think that set pieces are hard to score from in 09 due to the lack of any meters, as opposed to FIFA 03, which had very specific on-screen indicators that pretty much gave you too much information.

Corners are very hard to score from, especially on World Class and Legendary. Had to actually drop the difficulty to get a couple of accomplishments for my virtual pro.

Free kicks on the other hand are very easy once you get used to them. I either hit the post or get them in 90% of the time at realistic distances.

Believe me though, if every set piece was a guaranteed goal in this game every game would end at least 5-3 because the refs are nazis!

Hm, I guess it's good that free kicks are easier to score from, because it gives a harsher penalty for fouling just outside the box. As it stands now, we'll happily mow our opponents down, because we know the free kick really means a goal kick.

This is very true. I used to always hack people in 09 knowing that 90% of the time you could get away with just a red card, though in this game it is very dangerous. But remember all those times in FIFA 09 where you could use the jostle tackle on someone as you were running to them and bowl them over? That's a free kick, as well as pretty much any other tackle which brings your opponent to the ground ><.

Tackling from the side is hard :(.

Jickle and I played a couple of games last night, and our second game was a classic. Parma versus Bari in the Italian League (why not?), 0 - 0 at half time, uninspiring would be a kind way to describe the first half. Enter the Jickle, who promptly smashes two quick goals early after the restart, the second of which was a sublime chip over the onrushing keeper whilst being jostled by two defenders. Things looked grim, but I haven't had a bad parma yet, and I wasn't about to go chicken (was that gag hammy or cheesy? I'll let you decide). Got one back quickly, then at the 73rd minute levelled things up and sent it to extra time. Jickle hit the upright in the 90th minute, but no dice.

Extra time saw multiple substitutions but no goals until - sweet, sweet timing - a low drive to the keeper's left made it 3 - 2 to Parma in the 120th minute. Ha ha! Sweet! :)

The more I play, the more flaws I see. Unlike Fifa 09 where it looks months to fully appreciate just how good it was.

What exactly hve EA been doing for the past year? Hitting the post is still far too common. Slide tackling decisions by the referee seem to be made at random. The menus are very unresponsive. Online modes are unplayable most of the time. Corner kicks are a waste if time. Direct free kicks are way too easy. One on one shooting is far too inconsistent.

And worst of all; the goalkeepers. Hold onto the ball you useless ****!!! Most of the goals I concede are directly because of shitty goalkeeper AI. Not holding onto the ball, punching straight to an opposing striker, rushing off the line...so frustrating.

I'm hoping for a more polished Fifa next year.

I've found it to be an improvement. 360-degree control is a revelation, and has made attacking play much more fluid. I also scored a headed goal from a corner, which I didn't do at all in 09. Admittedly, the AI was on intermediate, but it was good to get a header on target at least.

I'm not so sure about a backlash. I don't really know how much I can expect from a soccer game. The AI will never be perfect. I'm very happy with the demo, and will be trading Fallout 3 in tomorrow for the full game.

To be honest, the only part of the game I give a shit about is exhibition. And online to a much lesser extent. I don't touch manager mode, as I find the whole thing tedious, and pretty much pointless. I always end up simming all of the matches, and if I'm not going to play, I won't enjoy it. I play the game against friends about 95% of the time, with the odd online match here and there. The only thing that determines the strength of the game, for me, is the on-field action. The rest is just extraneous.

I'm the same tbh. 1v1 online matches make up 90% of my time spent on FIFA. With 09 I only spent one or two seasons on Manager Mode, and had a run through a couple of seasons of Be A Pro but that's it. If I'm looking for a deep and detailed managing experience I just play Football Manager, which makes Manager Mode look pretty elementary. That being said, I do remember in the lead up to FIFA 10's release some of the EA guys saying that they saw Manager Mode as something of a work in progress, and will be looking to gradually build it up over a few years. So hopefully in a few years it will be a really worthwhile part of the game.

Yeah, I'm not excusing bugs or half-hearted modes or anything like that, but those downfalls really don't affect me much at all, so I'm not fussed. I played a couple of seasons as Cardiff back in 07 on the PS2 …

(Now THAT was a great game, at the time. All this talk of 10 being the fulfilment of the series' potential, but 07 on PS2 was a last-gen highlight. Although 08 and 09 on PS2 are probably just as good, I don't know, I made the jump to 08 on 360. Anyway, I digress …)

… But the only benefit of playing that mode was that I learnt all of the players, even the reserve squad, and can now point out former Cardiff players if I see them playing for another squad.

I'm sure they will work on it extensively over the next year, because I can't really see much else that they can improve on until we see some next-gen 3D grass in a few years.

Blue
19-10-2009, 01:09 AM
Hey, don't doubt it. Not in FIFA '11, I wouldn't think, but next gen, they'll be emphasising the surface and weather that much more. The grass won't just be a flat texture, it'll have some whatever mapping on it to give it that slightly fuzzy 3D look that you see sometimes. There's just far too much of it for this gen to handle something like that. Water will pool, snow will pile up. It's one of the few improvements they can make that require more processing power. That, and better crowds. But sports games ALWAYS need better crowds.

Bokracroc
19-10-2009, 02:08 AM
I still haven't noticed if Sport game crowds have advanced past Cardboard cut-out stage yet :S I tuned out a few years back when I spotted quite a few games still using them :S

Blue
19-10-2009, 02:34 AM
They have, slightly. I'm pretty sure they're low-poly, poorly textured, models now. From the usual distance though, they look fine physically, but the animation is still rubbish. They all move at once, pretty much, and don't react to what's happening well at all. It's only really noticeable during PKs, though.

I remember FIFA World Cup 06 took the camera into the crowd, sometimes. It showed you the view of the pitch from the stands, with about four crowd members standing in front of you, cheering, in silhouette. It was a simple but effective way of upping the atmosphere. It's sort of annoying how EA hold off on those cool sort of atmosphere-building effects with the normal games, and only use the extra atmosphere as the main selling point for the otherwise-slim World Cup and Champion's League titles. It makes the regular games seem dull in comparison. It would be nice if you could turn some of those stadium effects, like the streamers and confetti, on in the menu just like weather and stadium selection. It's nice to have the chants, horns, and stamping of feet as well.

EDIT: I just purchased it. It's very good. I just wish there was an option to set automatic substitutions in advance. You could pick who you wanted to swap, and at what times, just like you set custom tactics and formations. Then, once 67 minutes have ticked over, Babel will take over from Riera at the next stoppage, without any direction on your part. As it stands now, I simply never bother with substitutions, except in the case of an injury. It just seems like a feature that would make sense, considering they're doing crap like custom set-pieces now.

Well, finally played someone on this on Live thanks to Thraxas kindly donated 1 month membership. The connection was very good and virtually lag free and has now convinced me to buy 12 months of Live just for local games.

We played Bayern vs Arsenal, Liverpool vs Arsenal, a Spanish derby Barca vs Real and an international to finish things off, France vs England.

The games were close and filled with many comical moments such as a massive superman dive from Victor Valdes that missed the ball completely as his own defender tapped it out of bounds, a hugely deflected goal off a defender that completely bamboozled my helpless and incompetent keeper and a screaming Ronaldo free kick from Thraxas that went into the top corner. Not to mention a really dirty slide by his last man when I was clean on goal with only one minute left ha ha but I appreciate the tactic. Luckily the game went into extra time and he forgot he was one man down and to replace the missing central defender. I reminded him but he couldn't pause because I had possession then, after saying he bet I would score on that play, a flying Ibrahimovic scissor kick from a Henry cross completed the prediction ha ha. Sweet justice for my poor striker's injured calf ha ha.

As a couple of PES fans trying Fifa for the first time, I really need to figure a few things out, particularly how to shoot and convert more 1 on 1's with the keeper, particularly fake shots, and also stronger passes. I'm not that good. But on the whole, my first Fifa Live experience without lag was very enjoyable and Thraxas was a very sporting competitor. Pip pip.

Thus concludes my school report.

Yeah, 1 on 1s are hard. If anyone has a sure-fire way to slot them in, let us know. Also, someone said that they could score from free kicks consistently. Tips, please.

Regarding Auto-Subs: I believe if you have Assistant Manager turned on then it'll do the subs for you whenever it sees fit.

One-on-ones: Finesse button is your friend here. The goalkeeper is godly one-on-one so you need to put it out of his reach. Either use the finesse button and curve it round him, or practice your chipped lobs. Lobs are obviously most efficient but they're difficult to get the hang of.

Yeah I had a great time playing proofreader. There were definitely some memorable moments the Ibrahimovic scissor kick was a great goal. I wish we could have saved the superman dive, that was awesome.

I'll definitely be up for some more games in the future. Thanks for the games :)

A good, simple lob shot well over the keeper's head seems to get past him most of the time in a 1 on 1, and isn't too hard to pull off. It's also the most humiliating shot possible in multiplayer, because it takes ages to go in and your opponent just has to watch it, completely powerless.

Coo-ool.

Yeah, I was impressed with the Ibrahimovic scissor kick animation, I hadn't seen that one before but it fit really well contextually. I was less impressed with Valdes' massive superman dive... the ball was going 2kmph and he still missed it ha ha.

Er... you guys must be better at this game than me. I missed about 10 lobs against Thraxas. I think Thraxas scored from one or came really close... I need more practice!

Also, do people know that holding the right stick results in a longer first touch to get the player away quicker? I'm unable to use this effectively yet, but I could definitely see its value if it is able to be perfected.

Oh yeah, Thraxas I almost forgot with "memorable moments"... Your England keeper rollout straight into the striker's path ha ha ha. I thought for sure I was going to be the one to do that. Think there will be a subsequent matchfixing investigation for that keeper...

Since FIFA 10 likes to assume you've been playing the game for years, what are some handy tips and tricks for attacking and scoring.
I generally don't have too much of a problem getting it up there but getting the goal can be annoying. How do I do certain helpful tricks?

Using LB to initiate off-the-ball runs is important for creating space.

I converted from Pro Evo to FIFA this time round and I have to say I'm very impressed.

One problem I've had a couple of times is my keeper coming out to sweep, but rather than hoof it it just switches to player control. I get it taken off me and the ball goes into an empty net. That it happened when the defender was well positioned to get to the ball in the first place was rather annoying.

That aside it's definitely the best football game I have played. Personal highlight so far was getting the ball up and over the wall on the edge of the eighteen yard box. I've been pretty consistent with free kicks. And as for one on ones, finesse or lob all the way. Using a trick to round the keeper works nicely.

Shame I don't have Live to play you chumps online. Undefeated in local multiplayer though!

Some good games Mr_M. Why didn't you pick extra time on the last one? :(

I'm so used to the league format that I got up to leave and started turning the volume down, forgetting we had the option of extra time. Then I saw it and went to sit back down and turn the volume back up, but I accidentally switched the TV off (universal remote which maps the buttons to a touch screen). When I switched it back on, the option was gone. But believe me, I was going to pick extra time with penalties. :p

If you hear on the news tomorrow night that goal posts all over Australia have been raped and murdered you will know why >_>.

Remember in our last league game, when I crossed it in and someone had an open shot on goal and volleyed it straight into the post? And if it went in I would have snatched a last-gasp win?

What I'm saying is, don't be surprised if I beat you to it! :D

Oh btw, that karate kick clearance where the guy went fully horizontal was a classic!

Imagine the amount of broken controllers when they introduce beach balls. :D

If you hold the finesse button (RB on X360) when doing a free kick, it's a 'driven' shot, which means it's low and fast but doesn't curl as much.

Thanks for the info Mr M/Newton. Where is everyone else's great Fifa tips? Are people worried about giving away their secrets? Ha ha. Lol, they took stopping quickly facing the goal directly from Pro Evo, only annoyingly they don't have "stopping quickly facing the same direction", only "protect the ball". Really annoying. Here's a really dumb question though: For top spin do you hold "up" as the power bar charges on the free kick? I assume up as you hit the "top" of the ball. Never seems to work for me, I'm crap at free kicks.

Yeah, I don't get that. Barca are still the best club in the game IMO, and Real aren't any better than them, Inter, Chelsea and the like. The reason being, I think, is that EA have done really well this time around in reducing the dominance of induviduals such as Ronaldo, Messi etc. While you still get moments of brilliance from players of that calibre (as you should) I've been conceding a lot less bullshit goals from those kinds of players, which is something that was pretty rampant at times in 09.

So which teams do you want people to play with? EPL teams that you like personally? Barca, as well as having the European player of the year and a footballing genius in Iniesta, not to mention Xavi and Ibrahimovic, play the most attractive brand of football of any professional team, football at its purist.

To be honest, anyone who says they despise all European teams cannot appreciate their quality. There's not much point arguing with someone that can't appreciate the skill and talent of other European teams outside their bias fanaticism.

And to those who hate on 10, are your issues the football or the "management" side? Because IMO, jostling and 360 degree dribbling are 2 incredibly brave features that add so much to the game and should be applauded after so many companies release so many shit, barely improved rehashes of the same game. They have helped revolutionise sporting games.

Jostling feels like real soccer, hold them off with your body enough while keeping control, it has to be a perfectly balanced. And 360 dribbling... you know you can't only run 8 ways in real football right? The fact they tried to "break through" this barrier into new territory should be congratulated. Although after my limited playing time I will admit it isn't perfect. I remember a lengthy post I once wrote about encouraging game developers to go analogue instead of digital. This is exactly what EA have attempted. However, with such freedom it does make it a little hard to be precise. I think a controller with a slight "click" on the 45's would be a great idea.

I just can't believe after EA introduced such revolutionary ideas into the world of football gaming people would bag them for changing the game too much.

Having said all this, I should add the disclaimer I have no idea what you guys are complaining about aside from bugs in gaining achievements and the management side of things, I refer only to the actual football gameplay itself. Also, I haven't played the game a great deal like I'm sure some of you have so I reserve the right to go back on this and join the haters. Ha ha.

Edit: and thanks for the info Newton and Mr M lol. Will have to play around with it sometime.

Yep but if there's a player in the vicinity you will still turn your body to shield the ball. In real football and in PES I like to stop the ball in front when under some pressure facing the opposition player, not always turn my back unneccessarily. In basketball I believe they call it "you reach, I teach". Thanks for the reply anyway though.

Edit: I hate contextually sensitive moves in games, I despise the fact in NBA live you always face the basket. Sport is not context sensitive.

You're missing the point. They rushed the game out to beat Pro Evo, if they had that extra month they could iron out all of the issues. It may have taken longer, I don't know where you're getting that info from, but the fact remains that Fifa 10 was rushed out and now lies as an unfinished mess.

I assume Mr M means it took an extra month because it was released a month later this year than last.

My question remains Cian, do you guys have a problem with the football or just the managerial/achievement aspect of the game? I'm interested to know what your beef is aside from not getting achievements.

PES09 was an amazing game and easily my most played last year, and I'm tossing up whether to purchase 10. Would be funny if we both swapped allegiances.

I'm sticking with Fifa atm. As previously posted, I don't see any of the flaws you guys mention (or don't mention) in the footballing side of the game and the new implementations are fantastic.

Both, but mainly the football. The goalkeepers have gone back four years in terms of AI. All the random goalkeepers in Clubs are no more than 5'5. Goalkeepers can't make regulation catches. They rush off their line too much. Passing is inconsistent. Fouls (especially with the A button) are given away too easily. Hitting the post is still far too common, happens twice in every game.

And the lag is ridiculous.

What I'm saying is it's pretty amazing that the game could have a longer dev cycle (AFAI can tell) and the final product still appears to be rushed (IYO). It's not the first time something like this has happened.
