Tokyo Games Show? Yes, we're there now -- Daniel's probably ogling an Asian Bayonetta as I type this. But this issue's all about GamesCom, and we've got hands-on time with all the biggest titles. Around 28 pages of previews await, including intimate looks at R.U.S.E, Avatar, Alpha Protocol, Mass Effect 2, and Star Trek Online. Meanwhile, I get told to play DJ Hero on Easy. Not bitter.

Our review coverage is equally huge. We deliver the verdicts on Scribblenauts, DiRT 2, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, Punch-Out!! and more. This is probably the only issue where you'll read about how we laughed while a skinhead punk killed an emo.

Features? Well, sure. We don our de-constructing hat and take apart the first-person brawler Zeno Clash, where one of the lead designers discusses what went right and what went wrong. We examine the shady business of MMO gold farming and ponder what the stark silence from the big developers really means. And we look at the current state of game AI, discuss why it works the way it does, and what games of the future will be able to do with their virtual brains.

Oh, that's not all! We thrash four of the best CPUs on the market, get killed by bad FMV vampires, and devote two pages to Hitler. No, we're not joking.

Subscribers are getting theirs now, but for the rest of you mere mortals, look for issue 193 on sale Wednesday 30 September!

Curse you and your swift posting!

Anyway, really nice issue - good feature articles (only skimmed them, but looking forward to reading them) and some more fancy pants good looks for the mag from Malky. (especially the 'clean' sci-fi look to the AI article)

Top stuff!

Can't wait to read about Mass Effect 2 though.

Its a good image for a cover though, plenty of space for headings, boxouts and what not.

Mine isn't here either. I went to a newsagent, picked it up, flicked to my section, nodded sagely and walked out though.

There's an indie rpg recently released by the name of Dawn's Light ( johnwizard.com) that Hyper really needs to review as its easily one of the best rpgs of all time and easily the funniest.
First 40 minutes is fairly conventional stuff but it just gets better and better as you progress. Its even much funnier than Dragon's Quest 8 and I never thought I would see an rpg that could beat it.

I feel like subscribing to this mag again since Edge just isn't cutting it for me & there are far too many non-interesting interviews :( Are the subscription forms in the mag itself at $85 for 12 months like the MyMagazines (https://www.mymagazines.com.au:443/hzsub/submag?spub_id=172&a=1&c=v) website? I've got an old issue from earlier this year and it said ~$69 but I'm guessing because the price has gone up again its been changed

Just read the DiRT 2 review. Its was two pages of waxing lyrical about the Ego Engine and interface. I had to go back to find where you actually talk about how the game played.

Strongly Agreed.

Also, the deconstructing article on Zeno Clash was an interesting read too. In fact, the feature articles were the best part of this issue. Those, and the columns. That's not to say that everything else wasn't though. The previews added a few more games to my 'hoping-it-receives-a-good-review-so-I-buy-it' list, particularly R.U.S.E.

Whilst Invizimals sounds like a pissweak game, the technology behind it could make for a really neat handheld version of Project Zero/Fatal Frame, where the PSP itself becomes the Camera Obscura.

EDIT:

Wait... i just remembered. Isn't there a DSi game coming where you hunt ghosts? Bah, it'd be better on PSP >_>

Oh that must be "Ghosthunters Extreme: Project Boo!-galoo"

*pause for groan*

Okay, I've been too busy reading comics and have not read much of the new issue, and then of course the new Empire arrives..... but I promise to read Hyper real soon and then complain about every little thing that is not quite perfect and demand that the price be increased... or is that decreased? Whatever it is the kids are into these days anyway.

Well, the A.I. article was terribly good. The usual opinion pieces were awfully enjoyable and the layout of the mag was painfully nice to look at.

Overall a cracking good issue, but now I must dash to use my grappling hook to hide behind some gargoyles, before I go after the villians - of course I'm talking about THAT game, you know the one with the Bat? It's called Scribblenauts.

So I'm wondering if you members of the Hyper crew also get a little frustrated when games disappear of the radar for large chunks of time with no clue as to what's happening? Eg. Alan Wake and this darn 3rd chapter of the Golden Sun series.

I was thinking similar thoughts after reading an article in a recent Games TM about "hype" and how it can ruin a game by being announced WAY too early (as in several years before it sees release) or by building up expectations to such a ridiculous level that people expect the game to be blessed by Jesus and inevitably condemn the product when it doesn't live up to their overly inflated expectations.

Then people complain about "what it should / could have been" and meanwhile the developer may have been going in a different direction entirely and will be unfairly criticised because of how the game promoted / hyped / advertised etc.

Anyway, I too would like to hear the thoughts from the busy Hyper worker bees on how/if they get fed up with games that disappear for large chunks of time

Lazlow

Hype's a funny thing. Take The Outsider (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Outsider_(video_game)) for example. A game that I remembered featuring in an issue of Edge 3 years ago, with a release date slated for sometime in 2008.

Now set for an Xmas 09 release, and on paper it sounds like a premier title, but as of now has very little in the way of a bandwagon going for it.

punkgorilla
13-10-2009, 03:27 PM
The lack of hype surrounding The Outsider is probably due to a lack of release date, lack of publisher, lack of gameplay mechanics and just a general lack of information. Hell, it doesn't even have a website.

Just reading the Blizzcon article and apparently Battle.net was introduced back in 2003? I'm being a bit pedantic but I could of sworn it was with Diablo 1 back in 1997. A bit of sloppy research there.
Also the tekken 6 preview is just a waste of space considering you covered it like not long ago.

Had to laugh at the Night Trap feature cause it led me to look it up on Youtube - truly terrible acting!

Don't go there! I remember watching the demo (or was it somebody playing it?) in a game store way back when it was released, and that was MORE THAN ENOUGH OF THAT FOR ONE LIFETIME.

Well, my favourite feature of this months Super-Hyper-Mega-Awesome-Mag by far was the Gold Farming article. As someone who has never played Warcraft it was even more interesting to read about the issues, from well informed sources.

Here's to more articles of this quality (not that I'm saying anything else was of lesser quality, just this one was my personal favourite to read)

*And I've spent far too much time staring at the lovely page of Scribblenauts art opposite the review contents page, then trying all the items in the game.
Now I must dash to stare at the page again, it's almost hypnotic:eek:

Ryan Hayward

I too spun out at the gold farming article. A multi-billion dollar industry and all centered around leveling up for lazy rich bastards.
But hey, I guess it beats hard labour working in the fields....
