Quite old news now but no one else has started a thread about it so I will. The Pumpkins have taken the path of Radiohead and a few other bands and decieded to release their new album as a download rather than on CD, however unlike Radiohead's "pay what you think its worth" The Pumpkins new album will be "free."
I'm afraid I'm a bit of a Corgan apologist so you'll have to forgive me when I say I was a fan of Zeitgeist largely because it was the first album of theirs I listened to and really got in into. But I've also been a fan of the EP and couple of tracks they've released after Zeitgeist, American Gothic and G.L.O.W.
So needless to say I am quite excited by this news.
That said the website they've set up is a bit of a joke, the new member Kerry Brown seems like a bit of a tosser and the "teaser" videos are fairly bland, they even had a feature the other week how thier video blog is "the most viewed video of twitter!" ....pretty lame.
But that won't detract from the 44 tracks that will start being available on October 31 Halloween (lol) and will be slowly released into early 2010, the songs will also be released as a series of singles for those that want a hard copy.
Most exciting of all though is the announcement of a World Tour after the completion of the new songs. I missed them last time they were out and the thought of seeing them live makes me all wet in my nether regions!
Let the good times roll.
Zeitgeist was the first pumpkins album you heard? Wow, where were you?
The Smashing Pumpkins haven't existed since Iha and D'arcy left. Even when they were involved the albums became mediocre after Siamese Dream. This should
just be known as a Billy Corgan project...I wish he wasn't such a dickhead because he's definitely talented.
I'll check out the new stuff but for fans of the older SP material, I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Mellon Collie came after Siamese Dream. >_>
Besides Adore is a fine album, really different to thier early stuff and it's good to hear the band evolve rather than become stail. Sure the lack of a drummer means they overuse drum effects machines a little but Ava Adore is still one of my fav Pumpkins songs.
As for it only being a Billy Corgan project, in all fairness he did write most of the songs, music and lyrics as well as playing most of the guitar work and singing the vocals. Then of course there is the bizzare case where supposadly he went back into the studio after the others left and re-recorded the others parts because he thought he could do a better job. That was meant to be on Siamese Dream too. In one interview he goes to far as to say 97 percent of what you hear on the albums is Billy and Jimmey.
Not to mention there have been some great bands that have existed through numerous changing members, Queens of the Stone Age, Fleetwood Mac and I don't know how many members the Brian Jones Town Massacre have been through.
Mellon Collie could have been special if it wasn't a double album...there were some great tracks split up by B-Side quality stuff. Siamese Dream was a far more complete record in my opinion.
As for QOTSA, Homme released all of that great music because, not only is he legend, but he was always surrounded by greatness i.e, Goss, Oliveri, Grohl, Johannes and Lanegan. The change in members for SP resulted in far less impressive artists. It's all personal opinion really but for the record, I'd choose Josh Homme over Billy Corgan any day.

I agree, but the only album I discount is Zeitgeist, that can rot in hell.
Yeah not a fan of Zeitgeist, so I don't really have high hopes for this one either even if it is free.

I saw Smashing Pumpkins at V festival a couple of years ago. One of the most disappointing shows I have seen, mainly because Billy is a dick. I don't want to hear you muck around with distortion for ten minutes, I want to hear your songs.

Wait, the Smashing Pumpkins made records after Mellon Collie?
I thought they broke up, and each released a number of decent, successful solo records that are well worth checking out.
Well, at least that James Iha solo record was pretty good.

On the subject of changing lineups, Jethro Tull would have to be the ultimate example.

That sounds like it was around the time he pulled that shit in another performance and the crowd started heckling. He chucked a tantrum and walked off the stage.
Given how bad most of their recent work has been, Corgan should be paying people to listen to this. :p

Pumpkins live kicked arse years ago. Lets hope they make BDO 2010.

I'll assume you meant that in a positive way since you're going to see him in London.
I'll assume you meant that in a positive way since you're going to see him in London.Nah, I really don't think much of him. Except for the fact that he's a very talented musician who performs in some excellent groups. Didn't end up bothering with Vultures, though. They were asking far too much for a ticket. Sorry JPJ, but you're not Jimmy.

Scalpers = The Devil
I'm not sure if the Melbourne gig is sold out, you might be able to get a ticket.

EXACTLY!
Also, Machina 2 has some great songs on it. Far better than majority of Machina 1.
Zeitgeist was terrible. Ugh.

the greatest irony about the smashing pumpkins releasing an album titled 'zeitgeist' was when it was released it was an album so dated and out of touch with what was going on it was promptly completely forgotten about.

Yeah I wasn't very impressed with the $109 it cost for my Festival Hall ticket, more expensive than Nine Inch Nails. I figured it's a once off though.

New song is up for download if anyone cares to swing by their website.
I'm reserving my judgement for now, it's not great, but I enjoyed listening to it, the trippy kinda carnival music is nice.
A good start.
