Hot new Mario Title's coming to breathe a bit more hardcore gamer life in the Wii.

People's thought's anticipation's worries about these new Mario game's.
I adored Galaxy so a sequel is alright by me.
The other one is a bit of a wait and see prospect. I think the multi is where it'll be at but when I have mates around getting them to play a Mario title instead of Guitar Hero or Halo or Burnout is tough. I might as well put on the Pet Shop Boys, a sequined lyrca bodysuit and dance the can can. Which also sometimes happens. Depends what time of the night it is. :p

I love Mario games (proper ones, not those crazy sports ones), I'm excited about Mario Galaxy 2 because the first one was amazing, I played it from start to end, collected everything and then immediately did it all again with Luigi - that's how much I was into it. I should really give it another play through soon.
As for the New Super Mario Bros Wii game, the DS one was nice so I'll definitely be getting the Wii one. Super Mario World and SMB3 were the peak of the 2D platformers though.

You suck a dick and you die.
That's probably gonna seem more harsh without being censored.
If it was an XBLA title, I'd probably buy NSMB. As for Galaxy, I've already played it.

These two games are pretty much the only reason I haven't sold my Wii yet. Galaxy is still my favourite game of this generation.

@ Blue: But have you played it with Yoshi? :p
I think it's best to wait and see before labelling Galaxy 2 a carbon copy of the first, I'd wager it'll be more different than most sequels we see nowadays, and when the first was so good, well let's just say I think it has potential...
NSMB on the other hand, looks to be the game that gets the game that revives the fun of local multi on the 64, only now I'll be able to do it while drinking. The all red box and promises of some quite punishing difficulty is just the icing on the cake.

Hell yes! I'm loved the jumping on koopas on the big gear things over the lava. He/She just kept going, got about 5 1ups jumping back and forth, and then grabbed a shell and punted it back smacking the respawned koopas!
I know you all saw that...just wanted to say awesome!

i really feel sorry for you wii-only gamers. getting excited about a crappy 2D mario game that was perfected 10 years ago and a cash-in sequel to mario galaxy. why would anyone want to buy these two boring titles when the rest of the gaming world is getting ready to buy Mass Effect 2, borderlands, Dragon Age origins etc..

My, someone's got a case of the grumps this fine morning!
And I do doubt that there is a Wii-only gamer on this forum. They'd be pretty bored...
And yet there are a number of gaming experiences I've had on my Wii that neither of the other two consoles could have offered, so, whatever concrete donkey. I'm lucky enough to have all three consoles, so it's a moot argument for me, but it's a ****ing broken record from you and frankly you're wrong.
Sometimes gaming is about fun, which is what both of these Mario titles will offer in spades. As for Mass Effect 2, colour me a bit meh. Why is it okay in your eyes for some franchises to have sequels but not others?
And I do doubt that there is a Wii-only gamer on this forum. They'd be pretty bored...

A cash in to a game that was in the running for GOTY a couple of years ago? Say it ain't so! Oh wait, other consoles do that to, or shall we just forget about Uncharted 2, Mass Effect 2, GTA4, Forza 3, Guitar Hero 139, etc? Not saying that those games are bad, but by dismissing a game because it's a sequal to another game is pretty pathetic.

Define game. There's no such thing as a fake game. People like different styles of games. Just because you assume one is stupid, does not mean others share your opinion.

One of the best games I played last year was NSMB on the DS, and two of the best games I've played this year are Shadow Complex and Nyx Quest. 2D gaming is actually enjoying something of a mini-renaissance, because, you know, games are sometimes about fun.

No it doesn't, because shaking is essentially just a button press. Once you start using it for movement and precise controls shit hits the fan.
Also, side-scroller is my favourite game genre. I'm glad to see them return in some form.

2D is awesome, I'm glad that we're starting to see it re-emerge. With today's more powerful consoles (yes it's ironic that this is in a Wii thread) we can see some truly lavish 2D worlds and characters.. even though NSMBW is made up of 3D models on a 2D plain.. shutup Braid looked amazing!
Also quite enjoying Trine on the PS3.

I'd actually love to have more games styled like Braid. With it's art-style and being in 2D it gave the illusion you were playing a painting.

I asked at EB to price match that and they said they'd match it to Kmart's $75.
Which was better.

Managed to get a copy today, it turns out that my local Target Country occasionally sells more than PS2 shovelware. $79.95
Me: Hi could I get a copy of the new Mario game for the Wii?
Target lady: * blank stare *
Me: It's in the pile of red boxes right behind you
Only gave the first level a try so far. OMG the princess has been kidnapped! I NEVER SAW IT COMING.
I wish we could use the classic controller though, the bigger dpad suits my ape fingers better

Please. When did online multi take over those countless memorable nights spent with junk food, beer and good mates. As much as Mario Kart online is fun it pales in comparison to actually being with the people your playing.
picked this up this evening (thanks JB 3-1 deal). Guess what? It's mario and tha's Ok with me. Plays great for the 4-5 levels I've finished. New suits seem fun. I probably wont play much if any multiplayer but solid single-player mario is enough for me.

So I got this from eb with a price match to k-marts 75$. I think I would really be enjoying myself now but my wii is at my gf's place. Which is aight. Main reason I bought it was to play co-op with her.
We seem to play smb3 more than anything else together so this does seem like the perfect game for us. I liked what Peer Schniders (sp?) (peer from ign) was saying about how when he plays with his kids, if they get into trouble, they can just use the 'bubble' while he has to play hectically good and keep them all alive. Which is exactly what I can see happening when I'm playing with her.
I think it would be a nice addittion to games if that were possible. Ssb:b is just a little to hectic for her at some times so it would help things out.

I pick this up today and I'm feeling the same. It plays well enough, but it just doesn't get me going. It's got elements of pretty much every side scrolling Mario game ever, and it's fun for a bit, but I just can't get into it. It seems to me that this is more a DS game than a Wii game.
Oh, and lack of online multiplayer is a definate downside for me. I don't have people round very often and when they are here they want to play GH or RB, not Mario.

So this has certainly exceeded my expectations! Having not really enjoyed NSMB on DS, I was merely hopeful that this would be much better (the videos certainly gave me that impressions!) - and it certainly is. I'm having an absolute blast playing through this game, and I'm glad it is with up to three people, because it's really hard at times (I've died sooooooo many times and I'm only just at world 3!). The tributes to previous games in the series are great, too - especially that lovely (though not as charming) Yoshi's Island reference! If you enjoy 2D Mario games - and even if you didn't like the DS version - I can't recommend this enough!

This game gets ****ingly hard very early on. Couple that with the split second pause you get every time one player dies (which has caused the other player to die on a number of occasions :( ) and it makes for some frustrating moments. Yeah it's pretty awesome, especially in multi. :) I'm still wishing I could use a classic controller though.
I mean, they've got more than enough buttons to map everything, so it kinda seems like Ninty wanted to force waggle onto all players.
At least there's the nunchuck scheme, but even then it feels very half arsed so the controls are easily the most disappointing aspect for me.
(ie. When using the nunchuck setup the button cues for the standard scheme come up in-game basically everywhere, and the game manual doesn't tell you how to do even basic actions using the nunchuck - butt stomping for example I had to literally keep pressing buttons until it finally worked... it's A and then D-pad down btw)

Yeah, this bugs me because the slightest movement on the Wiimote will cause Mario to spin jump to his doom. I'm one of those people who tends to be pretty dramatic with controller movements, so it's a bit annoying for me.

In my defence though it's been a while since I played a 2D Mario game and I just kinda expected crouch would be mapped to a button, like C or something, as it is in the 3D ones. Yeah that pisses me off too. Like the tilting platforms, I flipped my remote to the side to tilt like it prompted and it wasn't working, then I realised that I had to hold it forward and twist it.
I guess they expect most people to just use the remote NES style but that damn dpad is too tiny for my fingers, you'd think if they're offering an alternate control scheme they could come up with an alternate set of prompts.
Yeah, the controller prompt thing is a very strange oversight from Nintendo. Whenever you plug in a different scheme in Mario Kart it recognises it instantly so I don't quite get the deal with this.

I take it you missed the co-op campaign mode entirely? Or you somehow didn't realise that having an extra guy with you when you're trying to find secret coins can be a total lifesaver if you f--- up and die.
That said, I sometimes find co-op to be more of a hindrance than a help sometimes. The fact that you can bump in to one another on a horizontal plane can be a total bitch when you're doing more delicate platforming sections, and I can't count the number of times I've been screwed over accidentally by a team-mate because we were in the same area at the same time.
The bubble mode goes some way toward mitigating this, but I ultimately I don't think players should be penalised for wanting to play co-operatively by having to give the game up temporarily just to get through certain sections with confidence.

So I started playing this again now that my Wii's fixed (fried GPU, second time it's happened) and I have to say, co-op just isn't fun. It's a nice thing to dick around with, but if you want to play the game seriously (i.e. get coins, play well) it's just not helpful having a second player. The amount of times you'll die from running in to one another or having the screen pause on death is a pain in the ass and ultimately forced me to stop playing.
I intend to go back by myself, but f---, it's just impossible to get through levels well on a consistent basis if there's another player, even if you're both decent. IMO Nintendo should have cut the "bump into each other on the horizontal plane" thing entirely for co-op mode. I get that co-op requires communication, but godamn, you shouldn't have to discuss strategy every 30 seconds.
Single player and competitive are great, but yeah, if you're looking for a co-op game to play seriously I'd suggest looking elsewhere. Penny Arcade's description as being "Divorce Mode" for married couples is absolutely right on the money.

It's probably the first Mario game that I couldn't be arsed finishing. Nostalgia just doesn't cut it. A few new useless items, frustrating gameplay, the clumsy wii mote gestures (even Nintendo think so given that you are told what to do every god damn time), the unspectacular graphics and ultimately boring co-op. Sad really. Oh well, at least there's SMG2.

Yeah. I mean, when Yoshi's Island DS came out, I finished it and then tried to 100% it. When NSMB came out on the DS, I finished it in a couple of days and then went back and got about half the star coins before I got bored.
But NSMB Wii? I played through the first couple of worlds and I'd had enough. Dull, boring, repetitive and way, way, way too easy. It feels like all the bits where I died were either flat-out cheap, or instances where I'd gotten bored and was trying to half-arse my way through the stage and got caught out.
Obviously, there's more to it than just nostalgia. The game simply isn't any good IMO.
So much for Nintendo using Mario to bring back the hardcore gamers...

I haven't completed it yet, I only seem to be able to play it in small chunks before I either get bored or fed up. I even used that auto-play thing to get through one level because it was so frustrating.
Up to the 5th world now, I did like the nostalgia trip to SMB3 when I was on that airship level.
Too easy? Mr_M, you're tripping if you think this game is ****ing easy.

Most of it is. The boss fights are a breeze. There were only two or so levels out of 2 1/2 worlds where I died repeatedly, and as I said before, it felt like those deaths were caused by cheap and frustrating level design.
Even if the game was challenging, it's masked by the ridiculous number of items and 1 ups you amass throughout. By the time I reached the second world I had 20 1 ups, and if I found a stage challenging I just equipped an item and it became a pushover. At least when you equipped an item in SMB 3, it wasn't a complete game breaker (and that includes the P-Wing), not to mention they were much harder to obtain.
Unless the difficulty takes a massive spike in the second half, I say it's too easy and I'm sticking by that assessment.
Though I guess anything would seem easy after playing Maverick Hunter X... :p

Maybe Nintendo's way of adding difficulty was co-op. :p

It feels like it doesn't it..
While the game feels decently challenging by yourself, co-op is an absolute bitch. World 4's castle is really bloody hard on co-op as well. When those drills are rolling across the floor, it's impossible to to fit two or more people in those recesses down the bottom, and second person just bounces on the first one's head until death greats him.
Has anyone else found it challenging to find the wrap pipes of alternate exits?

I think the difficulty mostly lies in getting the star coins. If you don't actively try to get them all (I've been getting them all before moving on to the next level which doesn't help) I imagine the game would be easier. The first few world is easy, the second is pretty easy, then the frustration begins in the third world backend and things don't improve from there.
The boss fights are a breeze
It's stupid, isn't it? The boss fights should be the hardest part of the game, but they end up being the easiest.

That's really no excuse though, is it? You didn't have to wait until the halfway mark for some challenge in the old Mario games, or any other decent platformer. A game is supposed to grab your attention and get you hooked as early as possible, and I'm bored of this one already. That's not good game design IMO.

I wasn't that much younger last time I played them. Also, those games didn't have any items that were as game-breaking as the propeller hat or the penguin suit (that penguin suit may as well be called 'God Mode').
Besides, I only played Yoshi's Island DS a few years ago and that was way more challenging than this game (though I don't think that was made by Nintendo, so maybe that's it).
Anyway, I thought I'd keep playing just in case Jay was right, and I just finished World 5. So when does the challenge kick in? Soon I hope? :p

World 6 has two levels that require you to tilt the controller to control lights/platforms. And thats when you start cursing.
That, and when you press A when you don't want to in co-op.

Just finished the game. Too easy. I could count the number of challenging levels on one hand.
Admittedly, I could probably pass Super Mario World in a similar amount of time if I stuck to the main path, but you know what? That game had 96 levels, most of which had to be unlocked (and the game didn't have videos showing you how to unlock them!). How many secret levels does this game have? It looked like there were only a couple, plus a ton of useless shortcuts. If NSMB Wii had a total of 100+ levels, and most of the unlockable ones were challenging, then it might be worthwhile. As it stands, it doesn't have the content to justify $80 IMO.
Call me when they release 'New Super Mario Bros. Wii: The Lost Levels'. :p
Also, worst music in a Mario game since Yoshi's Island DS.

Worst music? Jeez, you and I must've been playing a different game, 'cos I thought the music was pretty memorable (stuck-in-the-mind, hum-worthy even hours after play kind've stuff). I'm not as good with Mario games as I used to be, which probably accounts for something, but I found it quite tough in places, especially in co-op when we'd miss-time jumps, bounce off the other's head and send them plummeting to their death.
I had a much easier time playing solo, which makes me think that maybe I should've been playing co-op in a more competitive mind-frame, maybe?

I'm only halfway through the game, and I'd consider it to be quite difficult. Hell, even my brother who has finished The Lost Levels called it hard - you must be super-skilled! I'd also consider the game easier in co-op - my brother and I complement eac other really well, we barely ever both die at the same time - much easier than when playing by yourself.
These differing experiences people are having in terms of difficulty are quite interesting, and you'll notice it also in many of the press reviews around the place, too.
The music isn't too bad, it's not up to the classic level of old, no, but it is certainly better than the DS game's soundtrack.

when i first started playing i was like many of you, underwhelmed.
i persevered however and am truly glad i did, the second half is much better than the first, the final boss fight is awesome and pretty much every stage in world 8 is brilliant, especially the roller coaster level.
i am definitely going to be going to find all the coins.
ive finished it in both single and multi and multi can be very frustrating, but i also find that it can be quite a lot of fun once you get into the mind set that you WILL DIE all the time.
i agree the visuals are a bit boring but once again, the later levels are actually decently impressive.
as for difficulty, i personally liked it and thought it wasnt decently challenging without being overly hard (in single)
multi makes it both harder and easier in a lot of situations, accidental deaths are a pain both from being pushed off and those damn death pauses, but still ive seen a couple very unskilled players work their way through most of the game.
still i really wish nintendo would make a new zelda 4 swords, that was sooo much better as a 4 player co-op

I just didn't like it. It seemed to me that, aside from the classic tracks, there were only two songs and both of them were terrible. I got sick of playing four levels in a row and hearing the same lousy song EVERY GODDAMN TIME.
Here are the two I'm referring to:
DG07LxRJqOA
3yklB7h0LgU
Not only do I not like the songs, but they're basically identical, so even thought they alternate between the two it still sounds like every stage is playing the exact same song. Old Mario games had variety in the music, plus it was actually good.
Also, the new song they used in castles was completely un-memorable and boring. The only decent tracks that I remember from this game were the classic ones. :p

Has anybody used the demo play yet? I've only come across it once (on the last stage against Bowser). I died heaps and a green box with an exclaimation mark came up. After a few more failed attempts I watched it to see how the game did it, then gave it a shot myself.
lol, that happened to me once because I kept dying in the World 5 boss fight (which I had no trouble actually getting to, I might add, so no need for the video). It said 'You've died many times! Would you like Luigi to show you how to play this level?' and I was like "WHAT? HOW DARE YOU COMPARE ME TO SOME CASUAL GAMING N00B! I'VE BEEN DOING THIS SINCE KINDERGARTON, BLAH BLAH BLAH..."
So yeah, I didn't bother checking out the demonstration. ;)
FYI the Koopalings are all named after famous pop-culture icons.
Ludwig Von Koopa - Ludwig Van Beethoven, classical music composer.
Lemmy Koopa - Lemmy Kilmister, lead singer of Motörhead.
Roy Koopa - Roy Orbison, rock singer.
Iggy Koopa - Iggy Pop, punk rock singer.
Wendy O. Koopa - Wendy O. Williams, punk rock singer known from a band called The Plasmatics.
Morton Koopa Jr. - Morton Downey Jr., musician and show host.
Larry Koopa - Larry King, journalist and show host (although this has been debated over the years, I reckon it's more likely to be Larry Emdur)
Cool!
On a related note, the only ones that I could actually match a name to while I was playing were Ludwig and Wendy O. All the others were like "So we finally meet again... you!" :p

Me and my friend are up to the last few stages of world 8. Some of the later levels on world 7 are so easy if you have the propeller mushroom. Does feel a bit cheap to use it.

But you had to do that descend/ascend thing to keep your altitude or you'd crash, plus you had to get a running start. The Propellor hat gives you massive altitude from a standing start. It's a lot different.
Also, Propellor hats are much easier to get in this game than capes were in SMW, and you couldn't equip a cape from the map screen.
The differences are subtle, but they all add up... :p

Not denying that the Propellor hats are easy to get, but the capes were easy to get as well, especially after you open up the secret stage from the first ghost house in Donut Plains where all it is is 5 '?' boxes, one with Yoshi, two with fire flowers and two with feathers.

Played some more of this today...it's sooooooooooooo goooood! I'm up to World...6? I think? The mountainy one? The fact I played 3 player did make things much easier - I can't count the number of times we each died individually!
Question for anyone who is awesome at the game - my brother seems to have completely finished it; having collected what he thinks is all the coins, and finished all the levels, yet some hint movies remain locked, and he only has four stars next to his save file (there's room for a fifth). He can't seem to find anything on how to 100% this - does anyone have any tips?

Well this is what you need to get all five stars
Star 1 - Beat the game (you can use Warp Cannons)
Star 2 - Collect all 24 Star Coins in World 9
Star 3 - Beat every "normal" level in the game,i.e., you don't need to find Secret Goals.
Star 4 - Collect all 207 Star Coins in the first 8 Worlds
Star 5 - Beat every level, find every secret goal and use all of the Warp Cannons.
I'd imagine it'll be the fifth he hasn't done.

I don't remember that bit, and I've played that game to death. :D
Favorite game of all time.
I loved the cape too. :D The levels were so well designed and so much fun to play that sure, you could fly through them with some skill, but you went back to complete them anyway because you didn't want to miss a second of the fun.
Plus you could think of it as an improvement on level skips or hints, because those who couldn't pass a stage normally often had that option.
Anyway... What did everyone think of that weird trip out that occurred when you completed Star World? The first time I saw it I was about 4. At the time my older sisters and uncle were weirded out, and as the years passed I thought I must have dreamt it!
