I think this is a good idea otherwise games don't get the sales they deserve (eg GTA: Chinatown Wars) and don't get squeals. Or the developers decided it is not worth developing for the DS.

Seeing as there was already a court ruling making the sale and importation of R4s illegal, this further action is only logical. However my understanding was that ruling is based on a Japanese law.
But I disagree with the sentiment behind it. Might as well go after CD/DVD drive manufacturers or any media player that allows the ripping of a music CD seeing as that enable piracy as well.
Fact is the R4 is a product and how it is used it up to the consumer. DS and DS game sales are through the roof, and even EA admitted that a pirated copy does not equal a sale lost (http://news.softpedia.com/news/EA-Admits-Pirated-Copies-Do-Not-Equal-Lost-Sales-94516.shtml)

Actually Chinatown Wars had pretty harsh anti-piracy measures, so not a lot of people could actually use a flash cart to play it. I guess people just didn't want to play it full stop.
Also, just to note, the new Mario & Luigi game did not work on flash carts at all without a whole lengthy process of patching and stuff. I think it'd be more worthwhile to implement those measures of anti-piracy then targeting just a single type of flash cart (in a market that has dozens, even more).

I haven't squealed for a game in years...

No, it is not a good idea. The entire concept of region locking is anti-competition, anti-freemarket and anti-globalism. Governments, retailers, wholesalers, and consumers should fight against this kind of behaviour from corporations, instead of getting in their pockets in the case of the first three, and getting screwed out of the pocket for the last one.

R4's are old and outdated anyway. Silly stores, selling obsolete products.

I was about to say.
I own an R4 and I barely use it nowadays (except for tinkering around with pokemon save files, because it's fun and doesn't touch my actual copy), preferring to just buy the games instead (R4's kill your DS' battery life, too).
But R4's are really obsolete now, the developers haven't put out a new firmware update for it for yonks, either..

I've got one (forget what its called, bought it off Blake, has no option for flash card just a small built in capacity) and I didn't even want it for DS rips. I just want to play SCUMMVM games on the go with an interface that works :D

DS eXtreme or something.

Why fight a convience? and with the global economic crisis, you can never be too sure.

On the one hand I'm against piracy, and putting money into the pockets of pirates and salty sea-dogs.
On the other hand I'm all for file sharing and digital distribution and burning stuff that you are "not supposed" to burn.
I'm well aware that there are people making money off piracy, but I make a distinction between that type of thing and the everyday sharing of things between friends etc.
For example, if I watch a burned movie a friend gives to me (copied from his legally purchased original) and I really like it, I will go out and buy the DVD. *How does anyone lose out / get hurt in this example?*
I do have an R4 card for my DS and mainly use it so "sample" things. In some cases I have imported "things" from USA etc that were not available locally after enjoying them via the R4 card. So in my case I make a point of actually purchasing things that are good enough to enjoy more than one time. Anything (for example a game or movie) that is worth playing only once however, is not worth buying IMO. It's not like you can rent everything you want either, the stores don't always have the movies / games you want.
I also feel that ANYONE who pays for pirated media (not R4 cards, emulators etc) but actual PHYSICAL pirated media is stupid.
At the end of the day I'm willing to pay for legal product, but it's the easy access and better overall system of downloading media that wins out at the end of the day and I personally want to see more companies capitalise on digital distribution rather than fighting it.
I don't see Nintendo ever changing their ways in terms of fighting flash cards, R4 cards etc - seeing as they make more money from product on store shelves for their handhelds and the bigger part of the market is kids and parents who frequent the stores.
As a "gamer's gamer" (or whatever) I would love to see Ninetendo release their own R4 type card for handhelds and then sell games via digital distribution (yes I know there is the DSi store, but I mean REAL games, the ones you see on the shelves) - and at the same time continue their stance on stamping out piracy. But I don't see it happening any time soon. I don't have a PSP but at least SONY is giving the digital distribution model a fair go.
Just imagine you could buy any game, from any region in the world, via the net for your DS, and it was cheaper than the in-store prices due to reduced cost of not making any cartridge etc. Ninty could still sell the games in the stores, because they'd be selling to the market who don't use / never heard of things like R4 cards etc.

I have an R4 but CycloDS is clearly superior. I wouldn't say that I buy every game I would have normally bought without testing, I definitely buy less games now. Any game that I have genuine replay cravings for, I buy.
That said, I have Girl Taste in video games so none of you will be impressed with the companies I encourage. I buy TWEWY and Rune Factory.
