View Full Version : The Horseracing Thread

With the Melbourne Cup tomorrow, what better time to start a horseracing thread? Who's your money going to be on?
I'll be completely original and say I'll be backing Viewed. Bart's been on fire this season and Viewed had a superb run in the Mackinnon even if it ran 3rd. Plus it's drawn barrier 9, that's not a hindrance. Only slight concern is Viewed's carrying 58kg, the most of any horse.
If you put a bet on any of Bart's horses though, I think you're more than assured a place.

I don't know, I'm hearing lots of good things about Alcopop...

By the jump tomorrow there'll be little value in betting on Viewed. Bart's other top runner Roman Emperor might offer you a little more scratch in return, but even now its shortening up, despite never having run 3200m
Warringah is one to watch, young, light, with a decent build up and a Cup winning Jockey (Oliver). Newport's another one to watch.

How about Shocking, Laz? Heard good things and did well in the Lexus Stakes.

It carries the Curse of Corey Brown (two 2nds and a 3rd)

Bah. :( I don't know who to back then. Maybe Allez Wonder, Bart's third horse.

It'll be a herculean effort for it to cover the distance first.
EDIT: FTR, I haven't picked a Melbourne Cup winner in f***ing forever. So what do I know :p
Viewed is the favourite this year, but last year there were 4 or 5 horses ahead of him in the odds, so really unless you live and breath this shit, picking a winner is pure luck.

I've picked a placegetter or winner more often than not (Yippyio, Media Puzzle, Makybe Diva 04, 05, Efficient). Even when I was little and my folks put one on for me. I think either Viewed or Shocking. Normally I try to go for the third or fourth favourite though.

Viewed's run in the Mackinnon was great. Shinn used the whip once and then put it away about one hundred metres from the line and just eased him through.
By the way, it's a pretty crap field imo. You could probably put a line through the second half of the field.

If only there was still pep, we could have had a pep sweeps.

I think we should have one anyway. No prize for the winner, but you can feel special or something.
My sneaky outside bet will be Spin Around who is very long odds, but apparently has good form in the wet.
Trifecta: Daffodil, Alcopop, Spin Around.

Can anyone explain to me why after a year of not caring everyone suddently is an avid fan of horse racing?

Beacuse for one day a year complete strangers can rally around a single highly punlicised event. Stop being a scrooge :p
Plus if you were an avid fan all year round people would probably assume you have a gambling problem :D

Put me on this horse (lol)
I can't tell you every Melbourne Cup winner (outside of Doriemous in 1995; because I picked him during Grade 6 maths) like I can reel off every AFL Premiership team back to the 80s.

Got a 3rd (race 3) and 1st (race 5) so far :D

Chalk up another 3rd.
Corey Brown has lifted his curse, and derailed the Bart-wagon.

Shocking from Crime Scene, followed by Mourilyn.
None of them a Cummings horse.

At least there's a semblance of national history to this race, unlike the way people become experts in soccer or rugby every time a world cup rolls around.

Picked up a 1st in the last race to be $6 up on the day. Better than previous Cup days :D

I won nothing. Nada. Zip. I was thinking of taking Shocking too, till someone steered me away from it and ended up taking it himself. :p See page 1 for more.

In other, yet strikingly similar news, International Velvet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Velvet_(film)) starring a young, tight Tatum O'Neal was on TV last night. I remember having quite the 10-year-old woody for her back in 1978.
Not as bad a film as you would think. Stars Hannibal Lecter too.
Also.... Bart CUMmings.
