In this thread discussion of Google Wave.

My invitation arrived today, so I've had a bit of a look. It seems okay except the only contact I have is my brother and I don't know how to delete him.

I don't have any invites yet but I figure if I give a couple to hyper people we can get a pretty good community vibe thing happening. It took about four days from when I was nominated to when the invite came.

I love that the etymology of the name is Firefly. I miss Firefly. :(

How is it Texta?

I am curious to try it out ever since I saw it at the keynote.

It's hard to get a good picture of it when I don't have any friends but it seems as though it has a lot of potential.

This isn't bad so far, had a bit of chat with Texta. Unfortunately neither of us seem to be able to find good apps to share with one another, so its just a chat system atm.

Just signed up for an invitation thing.

Sounds interesting, like a useful version of Facebook.

Yeah, I think that's eventually what it'll be. But it's still a long way off. I'm not sure if signing up for an invitation is very useful. Getting someone to invite you works much quicker. Unfortunately I don't have any invites yet.

It's not social networking, not really, though that is a use for it. Its kind of like gmail, only they've properly integrated chat and file sharing all in the one interface. So far friends and I have shared photos, played some apps stuff, done some chat, we're doing collaborative story writing in a separate wave. It basically is facebook at the moment, but I could see it taking my regular social networking sites (no more facebook or twitter except THROUGH google wave), my IM client (adium), obviously email and maybe some other stuff and integrating it all into the one place. I'm not sure if its really possible to check forums through this though, the whole concept is one of collaboration, and forums won't work in that sense.

How is the collaborative storywriting part? That's what I'm mainly interested in. Does it provide anything more than Google Docs?

Well it's interesting, because its taking place live. I am currently watching my friend type a paragraph in the wave, when she's done I can go back and edit her work, if I wanted I can insert a paragraph before hers or just keep going with the story. This isn't a story-writing app we've loaded up or anything, its just going on in a normal "wave" (which is like a chat/email with as many participants as you want). Because I can see everything she types, if she types something out and deletes it, I can see what she typed and comment on it, which is useful for story writing.

This means as a chat its pretty weird, as if you wanted you could go back through a chat history and edit what the person talking to you said. Not to mention if you were having a reasonably serious conversation with someone and typed something you didn't mean you could get owned for it, even if you deleted it.

So far its interesting because its new, I dunno that it's reaaally going to replace anything for me, at least not until its been developed a lot more.

This is going to be a **** for me. I write a lot of things that get immediately deleted.

Yeah, I backspace-out shit in MSN windows a lot, too. Having people see the half-formed sentence I'm scrawling out before I decide to delete it probably won't work so well for me.

Otherwise, it sounds pretty much like any Wiki, which have been around for a while (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki#History). Most of them are just relatively-unstructured document revision systems where people can (and to whatever extent they deem civil, do) edit whatever the hell they want.
Further explained in WikiWikiWeb (apparently the first Wiki, ever) (http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?WelcomeVisitors), Meatball (http://www.usemod.com/cgi-bin/mb.pl?WhyWikiWorks), et al.

There appears to be a lot more to Google Wave, though.

Hmm, me and a friend are considering bringing back an old community we used to be a part of. The original cell was a community on Avid Gamers (http://web.archive.org/web/20050223084158/http://www.avidgamers.com/), which died off because the owner slacked off; and the splinter we formed went on to become an actual website outside of AG, but interest waned, the community underwent a sort of Ship of Theseus transmogrification (except not really looking the same anymore after), and eventually it was subsumed into Aussie-Nntendo (http://www.aussie-nintendo.com/).

Now some of the original people want to become a new ship. >_>

Anyway, the people probably aren't interested in rigid administration models and professional ambitions, or making any dedicated commitment at all really - so I'm thinking the site content itself needs to be handled something Wiki-like. That way if the admins or contributors **** off, people can maintain the content instead of having to complain on the forums to get anything done. On that note, conventional forums are fine, but requiring separate user accounts would be a pain in the arse.

So is Google Wave the sort of system that could suit this community? I don't particularly want to spend ages looking for combined Wiki/Forum software, or making the system myself, if there's a suitable, hosted, free service already out there.

Also, I linked to an archive.org store of Avid Gamers because that whole site is dead, too - it was a sweet place to build communities, but it was also a burden for the owner, so it looks like he closed up when AG2's paid scheme didn't work.

So far google wave is basically an interactive email. So probably not.

Track down the Hyper wave. You can search for public waves by putting "with:public" at the end of your search.

(So to find the hyper wave type "Hyper forums with:public".

Anyway, I've now got 17 invites, so if anyone wants one just pass me your email.
