This has taken over from DotA on Tuesday nights, and I doubt we will be going back. Newerth does look better (graphically) but I think the fact this is free (well microtransactions are there soon but you can play it without dropping any cash) and it has a pretty good visual style anyway.

I like the addition of ability power - makes the int characters more interesting (for me at least).
Enjoying playing as Morgana atm. Her first ability (snare + dot) is pretty rad.

Not sure how many are still playing this, but does anyone want to help out a complete noob figure out why everyone else is 4-5 levels above me all the time.. what am I doing wrong?

But no I don't intend to gain a few losses by playing with you to see what you do wrong :p

Just make sure you are in the lane as much as possible killing creeps, its important to get gold from getting killing blows. Kills and towers also give exp and gold to everyone on the team, just like Dragon and Baron, you only need to be close for kills.

Usually the way people get underlevelled is dying too much, having to go back to base a lot or running between lanes attempting ganks without actually getting kills (not the killing blow, just being near a kill) on enemy heroes. Watch what your team mates do if nothing else.

Yup. Also, if you're new, you should probably stick to Summoner's Rift, since it's easier to get a proper handle on things imo.

Dude, try 5v5. 4v5 is still kinda winnable (depending on how good your team is versus how bad the other team is), and I rarely see more than 1 guy leave a match (and leavers aren't that common). Unless you are just being put with tards because you are new...

What level are you? There is a period where all the newbs are grouped together (not sure what level range...might be to level 5?), so you'd be more likely to see dumbarses and smurfs for that period. After that period, the game matches you with people of the same ELO (based off of amounts of wins/losses), so level doesn't matter quite so much anymore.

Has Garrus been released yet? I haven't played for a while :(

It's auto matchmaking and the longest you wait is usually 1min 30secs. US is the default client.

The collectors pack allows you to choose from a wide range of characters whenever you want from the get-go. otherwise, you're limited to the dozen or so characters it opens for all to use, of which the roster cycles weekly. I think you may also get some skins and a small xp boost, but neither of those things matter, really.

There are two forms of currency to buy other characters and (incredibly small) upgrades. One of them you get by playing, the other you can buy straight out.

So you could just play for free and unlock new characters etc in due time without much detriment, really.

Ashe is good to learn with, but gets kinda boring. Annie is a good mage to learn on, Tristana is pretty easy to pick up as well. Alistar is a good tank to learn, and the support champs Janna and Soraka are quite easy to be useful with too.

Yup, she's pretty useful. Easy to farm and black shield saves people countless times. I build her as more of a tanky-support-mage.

Don't. Tryn is kinda useless early game and mid game. The game has to go on for quite a while for him to turn into a critting beast, assuming he hasn't been constantly feeding until then, and it just generally isn't worth it.

I have been playing him a lot and find I'm being effective starting from about level 10, which is midgame. I basically play him as a ganking hero with more HP than your average ganking hero. It has frustrated a lot of Yi and Katarina players. He's definitely more effective than Olaf who needs even longer and even more food to become good, but these're just the kind of characters I like.

Can't win at all lately. Past 20 games I reckon 2 have been victories. The only other one to come close ended in a loss when one guy went afk for 15mins just as we were about to win, then came back just as we were about to lose, underlevelled. And the more I lose, the more idiots I get on my team, and the more I lose. Pretty close to uninstalling atm.

I may actually stop playing this until Xin Zhao gets a nerf. Him being on the opposing team just ruins games, and someone always picks him because it's just free wins. But no one on my team ever seems to. I was killed by a Xin Zhao today, as Malphite. Both of us were level 9 and I was standing within my own tower range on full health. He hadn't really been fed, he had 3 kills on the board so it wasn't a huge advantage over my 1. But he jumped in and killed me, then ran out before the tower could kill him. Malphite is meant to be a tank character so basically; **** that. It's stupid that that's even POSSIBLE at level 9.

Also, last night in a 3v3 we lost because some dicksmash went and bded us. Just because he couldn't hack lossing to us. *****in hate some players. Then all he would say afterwards and while we were telling him to ***** off was 'lol'.

Also in that game me an my friends coukd swear he was hacking. He was just always able to walk through the walls in our base, and he could always know where we were if we were chilling in the middle. Nfi how but we swear he was.

Another game, me and the guy I play with are dominating, get their inhib down, easily. Game is in control. Then Blitz DCs for 10mins, and we lose. Great. Remarkable that I have not once seen this happen to the other team.

Enjoying playing as Nidalee. Nothing beats baiting an enemy Yi into taking me on 1v1 then laying the smackdown on them. Just about mastered switching to and from forms during a fight to heal+buff when I need to.

NiB just follow the suggested items for each character. Generally they are pretty good (not 100% ideal) and give you a good idea of a build for that particular character.

Personally I look up character specific builds and try different ones until I find one that fits my playstyle or the characters I am matched up against.

Playstyle: Amumu is mostly about passive damage. In team fights try position yourself to get at least 4 heroes in range of your ulti before firing it off. Also with the blue mana buff you don't have to switch off the W skill as it regens faster than it drains.

Playstyle: Harass with spear as much as possible, don't stress about mana - just try to annoy one hero (without regen/life steal preferably). Use ulti to either a) get around the map OR b) use just behind a enemy heroes pushing a tower.
Only put one point in the W leap skill as the additional levels only increase the damage which isn't as good as the others.

Oh, SOX. Please tell me your Amumu build is more situational than that, because that build is silly unless you're against an entire physical team. And who the hell buys a philo stone? Also, zerks greaves on Panth? Why? The majority of his damage comes from ult->stun->heartseeker, so how does attack speed benefit? Better of with a ninja tabi or merc treads, imo. Hell, mobility boots would be more useful since you can catch up to stun quicker.



With regard to choosing builds, read up on some guides and see what the majority of people are recommending and why. Then make your own decisions about what to include and what not to include. Magic heavy team? Don't stack sunfires and grab some MR instead. Stun heavy team and you're getting focussed? Grab a Banshees to negate one stun every 30secs. Enemy team buying too much MR and you're a mage? Get some magic pen and grab a Void Staff.

Generally I don't get past two sunfire capes. I might pick up magic resist or a banshee's veil depending on the other team.
Philosopher's stone pays itself off during the game with some mana regen for earlier on - don't see the big deal about that.

Also, zerks greaves on Panth? Why? The majority of his damage comes from ult->stun->heartseeker, so how does attack speed benefit? Better of with a ninja tabi or merc treads, imo. Hell, mobility boots would be more useful since you can catch up to stun quicker.

More attack speed = more blocks + heartseeker strikes. Personal opinion I guess but I'm not about to shift those off my build.
Also I'll add that I usually switch the Sword of the Occult for a Madred's if there are more high health chars than usual.

Someone who dies a lot and contributes nothing to the team. They 'feed' the other team gold by giving them kills, while giving nothing beneficial to their team. See the other team's Taric wasn't too much of a feeder, since he was trying to tank, and our Yi wasn't too bad after early game, since he at least contributed turret kills.

Pretty much what Watchers said. Having a build for your preferred heroes is important, but you should never just mindlessly progress through your build without paying attention to what you need. Your amazing dps build won't mean much if Ryze can nuke you down in a second because you have no magic resist.

Generally though, focus on what your character is designed to do and what they get that naturally let's them do it. Some tanks are armour tanks, they get a high armour progression as they level and I (generally) go for + armour items to boost that from good armour to crazy, but make sure at least a few of my + armour items give me +health and +magic resist too, just to cover a few bases. Other tanks work off health, some even work off dodge I think? But those might just be durable fighter types, not actual tanks. Damage isn't important for most tanks, so don't worry about it. You have teammates to do that. Attack damage is worthless on casters. Some casters need mana more and some need ability power more, but usually all casters benefit from both. Fragile physical DPS heroes need attack speed, and mixing either crits or life steal or both in means they can either kill faster or survive a little longer, but if you're being slammed a lot then spend on armour or health or whatever you need in specific instances. Some heroes are naturally good at dealing damage and surviving but can't chase, so you might want a Frozen Mallet or something to give you a slow.

That's just very general. As you start to understand the game more you'll start to understand the mechanics of each hero better and be able to tailor your build for each hero. Or ask about specific heroes here/on other forums, most people will share their builds.

Master Yi (maybe just against low lv players) is the shit.

Read up on him a bit (as I had the IP to get him) and with the right gear he's a tower/squishy killing machine. Loaded up with crit/att spd/life steal and I was free to just roam the map soloing neutral creeps, smashing towers and with exaust get in close to heroes using alpha strike. Pop wuju style and highlander and exaust if they try to flee. And when they counter with their stuns/slow a cleanse gets me out of trouble.

Only trouble is beating everyone to him during character select

I lost a game a few days ago because of a Master Yi.
Prick would not listen to us and kept getting ganked. We had a massive team fight in mid and won.
Killed Baron, without Yi as he was in bottom killing minions, which made him a target and got ganked.
We then pushed mid took out the last tower but we lost the team fight (4v5). They then pushed, Yi resed up and died again, then we lost.

It's pretty conterintuitive that Meditate actually increases your armour by heaps. Whenever I first saw a Yi do that I assumed he was vulnerable and went straight for him then wonderd how he was able to heal faster than I could damage him.

Best tanks in the game atm are Taric, Amumu and Shen. I'd suggest looking into those if you wanna tank (which is an incredibly frustrating thing to do in solo queue, but someone has to!). I generally pick Taric or Amumu, since I find Shen incredibly boring to play.

Malphite can work, and I find him fun to play if we need a tank that does a decent chunk of damage too or are against a physical damage team. Good chasing, good initiation and a fairly damaging skill that scales of his armour. Though, as I said, there are better tanks.

I tend to play whatever the team needs, or counter-pick the other team. No-one ever picks tanks or support, so that ends up being me more often than not. Though lately Kassadin has been a good choice for me, and I end up carrying pretty well. I've been playing a lot of Janna lately, since she's a pretty good counter for Amumu and he's free this week, so he's been picked a lot lately.

About to ding Lv 13, been putting some solid hours in and have unlocked a couple of Heroes with all the IP I've gained.

Splitting my games between Ashe and Tyndamere (sp?)

Nothing satisfies like firing ashe's ult halfway across the map to pin a fleeing enemy leading to death.

Thinking Pantheon will be my next unlock, I prefer the fighter/types to the mage/tank. I've got builds worked out for attk spd/dmg but ap and mana have me stuffed for the moment

I've been playing Tryndamere, Cho'Gath and Ryze pretty heavily. Bit over Ryze. Level 22 or something now, and the higher ELO players can deal with Ryze quite well. I love both Trynd and Cho and I'm getting good at picking up 2-3 kills before level 6. I always get shut down by really good tanks though, because we never have a Mordekaiser or Shen or anything. Damn pugs :(

Won an amazing match last night. It was basically 4v5 because our Olaf was jungling and he was god awful at it, he even died right at the start. We all laughed at him.

Just pulled off one of my favourite Amumu grabs.

Warwick is trying to fight Xin in the jungle, then Galio comes down from top to gank him. I see him go, and follow, unseen, through the jungle. Galio ults on Ww, and I think he's dead, but I toss through the jungle wall onto Galio, stun him out of his ult, Ww ults Xin, getting all his health back, then I ult and trap them both, Xin dies, Galio escapes with no health and Ww chases him down.

If you do it right, you level and gain gold and exp just as fast, if not faster, than laning. Plus, you have the element of surprise when going for ganks if they don't ward.

Yup, provided they have a character that can handle a dual lane.

Just did some all-random games with clanmates. Was pretty awesome. First one was all random, all mid, I got Soraka. She is ridiculously op for that ruleset... Got 20 stacks on soulstealer and kept everyone in lane.

Second one was all random, normal laning and I got Blitzcrank. Never been really good with him, but I managed to do really well with trying an AP build, went 12/4/22. Funny thing was, we were completely out classed in team comp, and getting smashed all game, with me being the only one getting kills. We had an Eve, they had a Sivir and a Heim... But they were a mostly physical team, so our team switched to defending and farming around the time all our inner turrets were down until we bought 2 sunfire capes each. Then we kept pushing them back til we got an ace and wiped their base. Very fun.

AP Yi can be effective if played properly - Alpha Strike turns into a great nuke and Meditate allows you to regain crazy health, and even tank sometimes. And those are Doran's rings. It was just a very poor champ choice with the team he was up against - we had way too many stuns.

On another note, does anyone ever have periods where the game crashes after character selection and you can never join ? I know its not my end that's the problem because ill play a heap of games in the arvo and then jump on at night and it won't let me connect to a match.

It's more turning him into a hybrid caster/dps with great chasing/escaping. The meditate tanking thing is just a bonus that shouldn't be relied on. Other champs do it better, but AP Yi has a few unique benefits.

I just remembered a match a few weeks ago I was in top playing as Ashe against another Ashe. It was 4v4 at the time

I typed "Hello other Ashe :)", then she backed off a bit and stopped attacking the minions. Which is when I ran up to her and starting attacking her, two seconds past before she starting to run away. Almost killed her and she had to recall. After I said "Oh sorry were you typing when I attacked you?"

Tried out Galio for the first time in a Normal match. Went 8/3/28 and was an absolute beast - he farms super well, and I got to build up really quick. Could walk into the entire team and ult and survive by the end.

Yeah, learn the basics and above all else don't go chasing people for a kill only to be killed over and over.

As a newbie player myself I'd say stick with ashe while you learn the ropes and find characters you like. I never really played dota b4 jumping into LoL so I had to learn the hard way.
