The inventors of the original Diablo have a new small company and made a smaller, cartoonier Diablo clone called Torchlight, available on Steam for $20.
It is awesome and cheap and will tide you over until Diablo 3.
Here's a look:

Basically, I'm interested in the opinions of those that have had it for almost a month now. Experiences you have had. Levels you have achieved. Classes you have tried. etc. I'm only really starting out myself, and would like to hear your thoughts on it so far.

I would probably have picked it up if it had multiplayer.

How many times have we seen this, with the result just sucking?

I haven't heard anything bad at all about Torchlight though. Same as watchers, I would have bought it in an instant if it had multiplayer, but im still tempted to get it.

I know that Hellgate London game wasn't terribly good, but there have been a few that have been decent. Like the translation of DOTA to HoN was pretty well done.
Even though I have yet to play this through, and yes, I was a little bit skeptical in purchasing this without a multiplayer component, it has been pretty impressive so far.
You can really tell these were the guys that made Diablo. Everything about it is diablo-esque. All the mechanics from Diablo are here. Town Portal, Scroll of Identify, Gems, Sockets, Rare Item system, Isometric view, Left/Right click abilities, Randomly generated dungeons, even the ambient sounds and music are reminiscent of Diablo.
The dungeon I am going through at the moment looks almost identical to the one shown in the Diablo 3 Barbarian gameplay preview.
I'm sure it wont have anything on Diablo 3, but then again it is an AU$23 game. For the amount of content in it so far, it really is a bargain.

Failed to mention here is that Torchlight is effectively a paid-for testing of the waters containing just the town in the title, with the full game (a F2P MMO + microtransactions) to come later.
If there is a way to get this without Steam, I'd buy it.

I think you can get it from their website without using Steam.

Bought and downloading. :D
For non-Steamers, go to http://www.torchlightgame.com/ then choose the Paypal option and you can use your CC without needing a Paypal account. Also, it seems that it works like an XBLA trial and the demo just unlocks when you buy, no further download required.

On the front page I am seeing "Torchlight" followed by the most recent post being by "fleshtea" and my mind automatically merges it into "fleshlight"

Yeah, you'd be able to. It's a 420MB installer and when you fire up the game after install it asks for your code to register.
Little ways in so far, playing on hard. I'm playing the Alchemist (mage class) first. I put initial talent points into the summoning of these little imp guys that basically just go nuts on anything in your general vicinity, and I'm dual-wielding wands (fire & ice). Also, my dog shoots fireballs.

It's better to buy the game from their website, the developers would get more money from there compared to steam.
The most annoying effect would be the one that make enemies fight for you for a minute or two. Always happens to the big ones that give out a heap of exp and when their almost dead, then I've got to wait around.
My hardcore Alchemist :P

Wouldn't mine trying out a few mods later.

The imps are terrible.

I played this for about 10 hours on very hard and loved it to begin with. But it does get very boring if you find really good loot and just find yourself spamming the same attacks over and over again as the enemies don't pose much of a challenge. Also there is far too many loot drops, it gets really annoying having to identify almost all of it and cash it in all the time.
its a good game for the price but just don't go expecting anything with a good storyline or varied gameplay. The game rewards you for powering up just a few skills. For example if you choose the woman, all you need to do is put your skillpoints into her armour defence, her ricochet attack and critical attacks. Do this and you'll kill the game in no time on very hard, especially when you come across very rare drops.
My advice is to try it on hardcore very hard as then you don't get so bored knowing you can't be too relaxed. If you die once, you're screwed.
Oh my god I just realised who started the thread. HI!

I completely agree with this, it feels like the loot droprate has been tuned for 3-4 players, not one.

I finished the game on Hard just then, weighing at a total of 11.5 hours play time. Not too bad for a $20 game. As for replay value. I don't think I will be going back to it anytime soon, and if I do, it will just be to test out the other classes briefly. Or to do something masochistic like playing Very Hard + Hardcore

Been playing on normal, which has been a walk in the park . . . until you get to the final boss. I hit him at lvl 26 and it's practically impossible to damage him.
I threw everything I had at him for about 10 minutes and managed to scratch off about 10% of his health. I really can't be bothered grinding for another 4 hours before I get to an acceptable level so that I can actually fight him.
A shitty end to an otherwise awesome game.

Torchlight (so far, I'm up to the three portal grassy part) is even pretty easy on Hard.

^ same boat. Never died once, breezing through the levels thanks to some lucky enchantments on my bow.

Yeah, I had to switch it up to v.hard to have it provide a modicum of challenge.

This game kinda makes me feel strange. at times its easy as hell and im bored but there is just something about it (i dunno maybe i miss a good grind from my wow days) that juuust keeps me interested.
what are the other classes like? i started a hunter chick but i think i want to try a caster guy, is he harder to play or the trees more interesting? atm with hunter chick i have two spells (aside from town portal and heal) and i don't need anything else.
also how do i turn my pet off, he is so amazingly OP that he just tanks and all i have to do is sit back and hold down my mouse button which is uninteresting.
Seems to me like a very obvious and rushed effort to capitalise on the excitement for Diablo 3, and rope in players who need something to fill the void.

Hunter chick has underboob in certain outfits. That is all you need.

pls look at the title under my avatar...
Why do you say that?Well, they pumped it out in under a year. Seems as if they rushed it to capitalise on the Diablo 3 anticipation.
It still looks fine, just under-done. I imagine they want to hook people with the low price now, and gradually build the game up, rather than releasing it as a more complete package at a later date, and risk competing directly with Diablo 3.

I think it's more to secure some cashflow so they can push out their online/ mmo version, but yeah really Torchlight is just something to tide people over. Considering that Diablo 3 is not even out this year I think they'll be fine.
Anyway I play Torchlight by firing it up every now and then and clearing a dungeon level or two, it's good times.

Note that this is not a wild stab in the dark, it is straight from the developer's mouth.

Installed a diablo 3 HUD for the game, pretty cool. Guy is working on an inventory conversion as well.
