Due to my cat chewing threw my PSP headphones I require another set of headphones for my IPOD. Im a fan of and have been using the bud type however am open to look at other types. I mainly use it when im walking the dog so Im on the move most times. The price range can be upto $200 but prefer to spend up to $150 depending on any benefits the dearer offers. I have looked on the net but actual user opinions mean more to me, any assistance would be appreciated.

I'm in a similar situation but am not willing to spend anywhere near $150, so advice on lower-range iPod headphones in this thread would be great also.

I'm also looking for some decent headphones. Question though... Some days I can find myself using a lawn mower or other machinery, what would be the best type to go for if I wanted to drown out the noise?

^Yes, this could've gone in Audiophiles Unite; and it's also popped up in here (http://www.hyper.com.au/forums/showthread.php?p=1145013) again. A lot of these have asked about iPods specifically, but as far as I'm aware they're not a special case.

Also, don't capitalize "iPod". Apple don't, and it really doesn't need the emphasis.

IEMs with good quality foam seals (and no "tuned" open bass ports), or full sized closed cans.

Is this necessary?

I own a pair of Audio Technica ATH-AD900, great headphones. For what you are after I would go for a pair of closed headphones like the Audio Technica ATH-A900 http://headphones.com.au/psingle?productID=143, or if you wanted to really cut out sound, maybe not recommended if working with machinery, you could go for some active noise cancelling headphones like Audio Technica ATH-ANC7b http://headphones.com.au/psingle?productID=435. hope that helps

I'm in the market for new headphones again, too. I got the Sennheiser HD228s, and as great as they are, they keep falling off my head, and I find you need to position them just right to get the best sound out of them.

Headphonics reckon that the Audio Technica ATH-ES7 (http://headphones.com.au/psingle?productID=226) is the best portable headphone you can get (they're around $155). Is that the case?

As I said the last time this came up, I can't stand ear/canalphones, and nothing you do or say will change that.

Best portable closed can? I think the ATH-EW9 or ATH-ESW9 takes that title.

Are they in that price bracket, though? I'm not looking to spend more than $200 here.

You didn't specify a price bracket! :p

The EW9 would be the closest at $224 unless you can find it cheaper than headphonic. There's also ways of making clip-ons act like normal headphones without braking them by using hairbands and other creative solutions.

You need to try some of the more expensive headphones to really understand.

In other news I need to save up so I can buy some one micron mylar and conductive coating to repair my Stax. They may be past the law of diminishing returns, but they deserve better treatment than I've been giving them letting them collect dust . . .

Ah, I was just assuming that people would know I was talking about the "general decent portable headphone price range" which is $100-$200, from what I can tell.

The EW9 would be the closest at $224 unless you can find it cheaper than headphonic.

My glasses tend to interact with clip-ons in unintended ways, so I'm a bit wary of those. I've also found clip-ons to be generally uncomfortable to wear, but I'm guessing that's not an issue when you're looking at $200+ clip-ons. I could certainly afford them.

Headphonics also mention that the ESW9s don't have the best isolation, and probably aren't good for portable use. If I'm spending $400 on headphones for portable use, that's not really good. ;)

I must admit, the woodgrain look of the ESW9s is pretty classy. I like that a lot.

There is no such thing as cheap headphones that do this. :p

I'm doing fine with a pair of these while I'm poor:

When I get a better income will upgrade, but they've already topped any Sony pair I've had. (Which isn't hard).

I've had some of those for a few months now, not really a fan.

I personally can't understand how people can spend that much just to use with their mp3 players. In the studio/home though it is totally justifiable.

I think I forgot to mention this when I got them, but I ended up grabbing the Audio Technica ATH-ES7s. They're really great, especially now they've worn in a bit and don't try to crush my skull when I wear them.

As Kas said when she compared them to her $60 Headcandies, "You can really hear the price difference!".

The best part is that they don't fall off my head!

I actually just ordered a pair of the ATH-ES7s as well. My current headphones band is cracked and falling to pieces (not to mention they're shit Philips headphones), and managed to get the ES7's for $99 delivered. Probably won't get them until after Christmas though. :(

I've never really delved into the world of not-crap headphones, so I'm pretty keen to give them a try.

A MP3 player isn't necessarily a bad source -- the problem is when people use headphones that require amps with their MP3 players. For example, a UE Triple.Fi makes sense for use with an MP3 player . . . a Sennheiser HD650 does not.

I have seen people use Sennheiser 650s with their iPods.

I mean, I know my Audio Technicas make me look like a total audiophile, but at least they're designed to work with the iPod!

Actually I kind of like the look of the ES7s, with the flat black metal shell. The way the headband kind of comes out is a bit daft, but I'm willing to put up with that because they sound. so. damn. good. Not to mention that at least I'm not one of the fifty people on the train wearing Sennheisers.
