I've missed a decade of PC gaming, tell me what I should go buy (off steam).
Is Civ IV better to play than id looks in videos?

Borderlands, i greatly underestimated just how great this game would be. I still may hate the weapon sounds, but the rest of the game is fine.

The Witcher, Morrowind and/or Oblivion if you're a fan of RPGs
Sins of a Solar Empire for your RTS fix

rFactor if you're a car racing nut
Only if you intend to join online leagues, and are comfortable spending a fair bit of time troubleshooting. Otherwise GTR 2. Grand Prix 4 for Formula One.
rFactor's great and all, but its supported entirely by mods and most of them have dodgy AI, and a fair few cause rFactor to bug out.

Add Diablo 2 LOD, War Craft 3 FT and Star craft to the list.

Should probably add that I'm really only after single player. Thanks for the suggestions though, I'll go metacritic every game on that list.
I used to be a big fan of Rollercoaster Tycoon, did that kind of genre evolve into anything recently?

Jagged Alliance 2 is on Steam, isn't it? Get that if you like turn based tactical shooters.

Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 should be what you are looking at. There was also a newer game called Thrillville: Off the Rails but it doesn't sound as good. The Movies may sound up your alley as well.

I've started playing Half Life and I'm really not getting into it, does it get a lot better as it goes on or is it really just about walking through corridors ad shooting monsters? I feel like I should play the second one though, do I need to play the first game to understand whats happening in the second?

Half-Life 1 or 2? You should avoid HL1 until Black Mesa Source comes out. Skip straight to HL2.
AranchineD
09-12-2009, 09:45 PM
Well at first it's about walking through corridors and shooting monsters. Then it's about trying to overcome highly trained Marines. Then it's about riding a train along some tracks and using a big generator to kill an almost invincible monster. Then it's about getting through some traps the Marines have made for you. Then you have to creep around a monster that can only detect you by sound.
Well, I could go on. But it most certainly is not just about walking around shooting monsters. It's better than HL2 IMO (not Ep 2. though)

Civ IV is the most addictive game I've ever played. Get it.
Edit: Got mine for $25 at the Toowoomba JB Hifi so it should be pretty cheap, especially off Steam.

Yeah, HL1 is probably a better game even though HL2 is easier to get into. Still some of the best AI I've seen today. I've had seven or so headcrabs just stand there and do nothing so I went over to whack 'em with the crowbar and they all leapt only my face at the same time. I had about 2 health after that incident. The game is so much more brutal than the first.
Also, if you haven't played HL2 you need to add Orange Box to that list.

Does the Steam version come with Opposing Force? (I assume it does) That is one brilliant expansion pack.

I've been playing Civ III a bit recently but now I'm gonna play some Civ IV. Thanks guys, you've just cost me a few days of my life.
Edit: Also, Rome/Medieval II Total War has taken up most of my PC gaming time for the last 5 years.

Luckily I deleted it many moons ago...

It is SSUUUUPER cheap nowadays, you can get it and at least one of the expansions (Barbarian Invasion is better than Alexander) for like, $25? Probably less during a Christmas sale.

Toatally cannot fathom why Bioshock hasn't been suggested yet. If you haven't played it drop everything and grab it.

Civ IV is a shitload better than Civ III on its own, but the expansions to Civ IV make it an awe-inspiringly incredible game. If you're playing Civ IV, you just have to invest in Warlords and Beyond the Sword.

If your tastes are anything like mine you'll love TF2 and maybe even L4D2. But that's just me.
If you read his posts like most people did you'll realise he's looking for single player games, and maybe even PC exclusives. But that's just him.
NOLF2
hmm, I forgot that game existed. Might go lookin for it.

Tell someone else to get ****ed, then play Dwarf Fortress.
edit: or just play Fantastic Contraption. (http://fantasticcontraption.com/index.php) It's not a 2 player game, but you can get some good collaboration going on.

Not really worth it, just buy the game :p
