The Reader's Game of the Year special will appear in issue 198.

Batman Arkham Asylum - Unlike all the previous Batman games, Arkham Asylum actually made me feel like I was Batman and I didn't even have to wear my home made costume! Hiding in the shadows, grappling from ledge to rooftop, taking out baddies before they even know you're in the room, it's fantastic! For me a game is a keeper when I am compelled to hunt down every single last secret and complete it 100%, a rare thing for me, but something I did obsessively with those darn Riddler challenges.

Unlike every other music game post-GH2, this game isn't trying to appeal to everyone and absolutely pleasing none of them. It goes after the point-scoring crowd (which includes me!) and the gameplay is suited entirely around appealing to those people.

Focused gameplay just seems more enjoyable than gameplay trying for "wide appeal", I guess.

Dawn of War II

Sick of me mentioning this yet?

It's Dawn of War, but without the mindless grinding of units.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

The kick-arse set pieces, improved combat, and general sense of awesome set Uncharted 2 apart from pretty much everything else this year. I find it hard to divorce Game of the Year from Gameplay, so it gets both.

You can quite simply mess around for hours finding and nailing lines, without even touching the single player component.

Assassins Creed 2.

Achieves what the original attempted in terms of gameplay and story, Assassins Creed 2 is a rare and unique experience.

Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time

It rekindled my love of platforming, puzzles, minigames and platforming puzzle minigames. Plus smashing crates and blowing shit up.

Assassins creed 2

An onslaught of new gameplay mechanics. Uncharted and batman had a few cards up their sleeves, but Assassins creed 2 had a whole decks of aces.

Batman: Arkham Asylum. Hanging upside down waiting to pounce was fantastic gaming.

Batman Arkham Asylum

For the brilliant mix of defensive combat, stealth, detective/investigation, exploration gameplay elements all paced together so well, there's never a dull moment.

Immersed myself in the world and found it incredibly difficult to tear myself away. That's what the best games do.

I was split between Uncharted 2 and Batman. Both have gorgeous graphics, excellent gameplay and sound, but Batman was just that bit more fun and rewarding.

Uncharted 2

Sure, the gameplay elements are derivative, but it's the combination of cover based shooter elements and wonderfully acrobatic platform elements that make the firefights in Uncharted 2 so engaging.

Finally a game that does the Dark Knight justice.... If only we could expect this kinda polish on all licensed super hero games...

Borderlands.

Worked well as a shooter, the constant stream of loot and numbers increased the addictiveness, simple drop-in, drop-out multiplayer experiences, and very few instances that made me want to chuck the controller out the window due to frustration. I was really happy to sink far too many hours of my life into this.
