Resident Evil 5

Okay, the AI is complete balls. But Mercenaries mode more than makes up for the crappy single player, and playing the game co-op takes those issues away and leaves a still extremely good action game.


Although if this GOTY vote lasts until after Bayonetta gets released, then I'll definitely be changing my vote.

Bayonetta

It's not technically out in Australia yet, but it will be at the start of next year, and you can download the demo right now, so hop to it! From the original creator of Devil May Cry and Resident Evil, Bayonetta is a successful attempt at updating the combo-oriented gameplay of the former for a new hardware generation. Equal parts Dante and the chick from Bullet Witch, the main character is a leggy bookworm with a killer hairdo. A deep and rewarding combo system, outstanding graphics and amazing set-pieces all combine to make Bayonetta the action game of 2009.

There were enough eye-popping set pieces here to over-stuff even a Michael Bay film. Fortunately, videogames are, by habit, usually longer than movies, and so Naughty Dog were able to get away with all of them while still providing a mostly excellently paced experience.
