Was leaning towards Blazblue earlier in the year, but then I got a stick.

No contest really. Tekken 6 sucks and Virtua Fighter 5 got released 2 years ago (Wish it didnt cause then I wouldnt be voting for Street Fighter IV). Street Fighter IV by default

Still so glorious after all these years. For those that would prefer something other than Ryu and his thousand clones.

BlazBlue
While I loved Streetfighter IV, Blazblue tried to do something new and different, and it succeeded really, really well. While it doesn't have the accessibility of Capcom's fighting juggernaut, it still manages to bring Arc System Works' unique approach to fighting games to a more mainstream audience. Well, that, and the fact that if I don't nominate it, no one will. :(

Street Fighter IV
First time I've felt compelled to get involved and be part of a local gaming scene. Also caused me drop countless coins into an arcade machine, something I saw as stupid and pointless before.

Tatsunoko Vs Capcom
Though it was imported it's been in my arcade since around the beginning of the year so it counts.
Anyway, the future of the Vs series. Its super-simple control scheme will hopefuly bring in some new blood once it gets a console release

Street Fighter IV: A game I've been playing fairly consistently since release, probably a first for any game let alone a fighting game. Likewise, it's also been the first in which I've actually been part of any significantly large local 'scene' for. (the same one as SOX's, infact)
Tekken 6 is an honourable mention but a totally crap netcode on release let it down massively.

Street Fighter 4 hands down im not even a 2d fighter fan and this game has made me play for hours on end brilliant graphics and well balanced set of characters

UFC 2009 Undisbuted : Its fighting mechanics are as deep as you wanna make them. Knowing how to attack and counter the various styles was key to success, for the uninitiated player this game could be brutal.

Not really though... its no deeper than any of the previous MMA games, its simply more fluid and more solid. Fighting is somewhat rock 'em sock 'em, and its pretty skint on submissions.
Not hating on it - i voted it for best sports title - but the fighting is pretty shallow. Especially when everyone slots into solid definitions of Boxer/Kickboxer/Muay Thai & BJJ/Wrestling/Judo. That's not how MMA works.

Weak year for fighting games - the best game by a considerable distance.

Street Fighter 4
For many reasons but the most enjoyable one was to hear the constant complaints from a certain Mr Wells about the game interferring at work. If you can't beat them join them Darren.
Oi!
If it weren't obvious, Blazblue gets my vote as well. It and SF4 both have flaws, so I'll put it down to having a better console port and simply prefering the mechanics
Tekken 6
Let's see Street Fighter IV put a kangaroo with boxing gloves against a Panda with a school uniform.

This unlikely mix is exactly what I needed in a fighting game this year.

Street Fighter IV.
Every afternoon for quite some time I could be found on my couch, in my undies, getting destroyed by better players online.
