Borderlands
My shotgun shoots rockets!
Runner up was Chronicles Of Riddick: Assault On Dark Athena, which was great of course, especially with the retouched Butcher's Bay, but I didn't think the Dark Athena part of the game was good enough on its own to be worth calling it FPS of the year.

Australian Version blows chunks but the uncut version is bucketloads of fun. Tons of online modes, weapons and zombies to decapitate make this a winner for me. Modern Warfare 2 was very close to beating it in my eyes though

Modern Warfare 2
The single player mode has one of the most emotive and meaningful stories I have ever seen in a shooter. A shooter has never kept me on the edge of my seat as this one has. Also the multiplayer is pretty damn good when you aren't being stabbed from across the room by a yank!

Modern Warfare 2
It has everything; a mature campaign with some terrifying sequences, addictive Spec Ops and an online mode which (despite the annoying glitches) will keep you playing until the inevitable Modern Warfare 3.

Modern Warfare 2.
Slim pickings this year, but this was popcorn gaming at its best.

Modern Warfare 2
By default as its essentially the only 2009 FPS I've played, but despite that it is still a solid follow up CoD4: Modern Warfare. Gripping single player narrative with many tense and hectic set pieces, coupled with fun multiplayer.

Borderlands
Granted I haven't played a hell of a lot of FPS's this year, but Borderlands has certainly held my attention the longest.

Borderlands
In a lot of ways, this is the reverse of Fallout 3, in that it's more an FPS than an RPG, rather than the other way around. It has a really great atmosphere, and the cel-shaded graphics work with the cartoonish looks of the game. Getting uber-destructive weapons is always a great moment.

It deserves a vote or two, even if the Aussie version is tosh.

Modern Warfare 2
A cracking single player campaign and a somewhat glitchy but enjoyable and long-lasting multiplayer mode gives it the edge for this year's FPS award.
Honourable mention goes to the Mad Max-themed lootfest that is Borderlands. Braaaaaiiinnnnssss...

Modern Warfare 2
Probably the only FPS I played this year...which is odd for me.
Damn good it was.

Modern Warfare 2
I became remarkably attatched to the characters, which is pretty rare in an FPS. Certain events during the gulag mission for example made me very excited.

Then according to Vin you should have been playing A Boy And His Blob. But I digress.
Modern Warfare 2
More Bond in places than the recent Bond films, but it was very entertaining, and until everyone leveled up and discovered the cheats the multi was good. Spec Ops was also a great addition.

The un-Australian version of Left 4 Dead 2
That's bloody un-Australian of you to say.
Anyway, I vote for Quake Live. It loads awesome fast, it plays awesome fast, it still kicks the ass of many FPS (multi or otherwise)

My favorite first person shooter for this year has to go to Left 4 Dead 2, hell even with it censored this was a blast to play, great multiplayer experience, especially when playing with a group of friends, campaign, versus, survival, whatever mode the game is far better than the first and a blast to play every time. And Dark Carnival has the best finale ever... just sayin

Modern Warfare 2
The story made no friggin sense, but I'm still addicted to the multiplayer - even despite the horrendous lag and retarded 13 year olds singing and yelling at eachother.

Borderlands, even though it's not really FPSish in the strictest sense. MW2 was alright and more shootery, I just can't vote for something that quotes Rumsfeld and Cheney without the slightest sense of irony. I'm uncomfortable with the ridiculous amount of flagwaving and war is hell (but fun) crap. Felt like a US defense force recruitment ad, if you told me IW were receiving government kickbacks for it I wouldn't be suprised. And, y'know, wasn't as good as COD4. Seems like a weak year for shooters.

Outstanding.
If MW2 wins this, it's proof positive that none of you play games single-player.

You cant forget Killzone 2. Xbox players missed out which is a shame and thats where it will lose votes. Its the most realistic of all shooters and a great storyline.

Is a rollercoaster ride from start to finish. Add to that the brilliant spec ops mode and multiplayer and you have an amazing package.

Modern Warfare 2
Of all the forms of entertainment this year in every medium, Modern Warfare 2 had the most 'OH SH-' moments. Add that to the best Co-op experience to date, and the fact I haven't touched the online multiplayer is surprisingly irrelevant.

Left 4 Dead 2.
I would seriously be happy to just keep replaying the scenarios over and over. They claim that each game is a unique experience and I am inclined to believe them.
