Rather than hide away my total ignorance on such matters I've decided to embrace it completely and start a new thread on the secrets of owning a xbox 360 - of which one has recently purchased one recently.
Title question stands; what other gems can you give me?
... and I bought a HDMI cable at purchase.

Are you talking about actual AA batteries (I dont know) or the recharge kit?
My recharge kit charge seem to last about 5-8 hours.

Chuck two Duracell batteries in it and they'll last about 3 weeks, easily.

Yeah 3 weeks sounds about right. They've got at least another few hours in them after the light starts flashing annoyingly on the controller as well.

This.
I use ultra-fancy topline Energiser rechargeables and they are honestly worth the price. They last for ages and ages. I generally recharge them before they actually go flat because they'll do the annoying LOW POWER flash for another week before actually dying.

GAME had a sale on black rechargeable packs, which mach my controller. They were 3 for 20 bucks! I attach one to my other contoller and attach the charge cable to it, and leave it to charge. When the one on my main pad dies, I swap them. Its a good system! Good alkalines do last ages though, I can recommend Duracell Ultra.

I usually get maybe two weeks out of mine and sometimes that's up to twelve hours a day of playing.

Question: will a wired 360 controller I've used on my PC work ok in the 360s usb slot?

Of course it will sausage! They are 360 controllers, after all. Just with that pesky wire.

My plug and play kits usually last for a couple of hours before I have to recharge them. Might go and get some duracells.

With rechargeable AAs there are two types:
1. High-current drain, which are good for camera flashes or motors, and devices which pull a lot of power.
2. The other type has a lower mAh rating but can keep its charge much longer. eg. Vapex Instant AAs.
Doesn't really matter which type you use for controllers though.
