I know there's a PSN store thread, but I kind of think this is thread worthy. It's $9.95, should be there on the Friday morning update and is coming to the actual AU/EU store. Peace.

Here's a bit of bloody sexytime for you if you're wondering why you should care.

I loved the art design of this game, but found the actual gameplay finicky in the sense I got to a point where I was fighting a specific type of creature and didn't have a weapon with the required stats to attack it strongly.

That said I wasn't all that clued in with these types of games when I played it.

Got a legit PSone copy I've yet to fire up... one day I will >_>

Same, I hired it out and loved it though. But I was a bit of a Sqauresoft nerd around that time, after FFVII and VIII. But you can't exactly buy all the games you like when your 15, can't wait to give it another try.

I saw my mate playing his copy recently and it doesn't look like it has aged very well unfortunately. Having said that - I will probably download it anyway.

It looked pretty bad back in the day, but it's the battle engine & story that tried new things and won fans.

Yeah, that combat gimmick was annoying. it turned me off the game

It works really well if you know what you're doing, offering a great range of customized weapns. I admittedly rushed through with little regard for really nutting out diverse weaponry.

I might rip my disc and put this on my PSP.

Also; I thought it looked awesome in its day. Granted I played soley on a PS1 back then, but as far as PS1 games go it looked pretty sweet to me.

Yeah the combat turned me off as well. The enemy types were so particular the few weapons I had were not effective and took forever to kill enemies so it became a chore.

I actually came back to it a second time because everyone gushed over the game so much and had the same reaction to it (probably just loaded my save when maybe a fresh start would have been better). Anyway I think this is the only square game that I bought and sold without finishing it.

But yeah graphics, story and presentation were awesome at the time, I wanted to keep going but just couldn't.

Vagrant Story is the best thing Square ever did

Really, it's a game where you actually have to sit down and think about how you're going to plan out your weapon use, and on what enemies to use which, and which weapons you're going to craft. Plus in the combat itself positioning was actually important, especially on the bigger enemies and bosses, if you're not standing under the head of a dragon you're ****ed!

I'll wait for it to go up on the USA PSN store.

I still have my original PS1 disk around somewhere too. I loved the art in it and became so good at chaining attacks I could kill any boss off my first turn. Getting chains into the 300's wasn't unusual.

imo it still looks lovely, it may be a bit blocky, but it runs in hi-res and has stunning colours and a good moody atmosphere, I played it for a bit last year after not seeing it since the late 90s

Like the black sheep in the PS1 Square family...obviously very different to FF7,8 & 9 but every bit as good.

Combat was tough but only because real thought was meant to go into crafting weapons ect...

Have a burnt copy and an original PS1 copy I picked up 2nd hand, the story/atmosphere is worth the price of admission alone

Dammit. Was hoping for Xenogears, Brave Fencer Musashi or Legend Of Dragoon. Already got a complete PAL copy of Vagrant Story. Awesome game tho so good for those who missed out on a hard copy

but it runs in hi-res

I really doubt that. Unless downloaded PSone games are using some emulator different than the one used for original PSone games.

No, he means it ran in the original PS1's hi-res mode.

I bought a used copy of this back during the FFXII hype cycle to see what the fuss was about. I thought it was a really interesting game, but I never had the chance to go through it properly.

I'm really tempted to put my disc in the PS3 and see how it goes. maybe it'll work better than FFVIII in the PS3 does!

I have the black edition of FFVIII that my backwards compatible PS3 likes to spit out and laugh at me. Last time I tried it was last year so maybe I should give it another go, maybe it will work now with all the firmware updates since then

Nope. Apparently none of the PAL editions work on the PS3 (I looked into it a couple of months back), but the Platinum version of the US release does, assuming you have a US PS3, of course.

That's it.

Another example of PS1 game with hi-res is Soul Reaver. Stunning game.

Well this is interesting, some PS2 games feature "progressive scan" mode that can only be activated in the rather archaic fashion of holding down certain buttons while booting, and they will do the same wehn played on a PS3 as well

You can buy solo ones (PS2 only) for even cheaper, like $10

Sorta reminds me of Etrian Odyssey, incredibly hard & requires particular weapons to kill enemies otherwise you're stuffed. I've been tempted to buy it cuz its Squaresoft, its an RPG (of sorts) and has a lot of positive feedback + its cheap-ish

Think I'll still give it a miss unfortunately, there was another RPG I was interested in, on the PSone, kinda similar to Final Fantasy - don't think it came to AU shores (from US). Anybody know what it is?

Legend of Dragoon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_Dragoon)?

Its the only non-Square PSone JRPG that I recall garnering a bit of hype and press. Its still Japanese though, and it did get a local release.

Nah, pretty sure it was something else, kinda like Wild Arms. I'd know it if I saw the cover since someone I knew had it (who I can no longer contact)

edit: Looked at the cover of Wild Arms, now I'm sure it was that. Dang

Pretty sure that got a release too, never played it though, didn't really looking appealing.
