This thread is all about tuning cars in Forza Motorsport 3. If you're looking to show off a sweet new tune or design, looking for advice on what mods to dump into your car next or you're just not sure about which car is best for which event, this is the place to share your questions and answers.

To get the ball rolling, I'll share my rule of thumb regarding which upgrades you should put in your car first - make it turn better, stop quicker and go faster. In that order.

First thing I do is find some comfortable toe, spring rates and anti-roll settings so it corners comfortably, then I turn on the OSD to show the heat spread in the tyres to tweak the camber and caster so its relatively even.

Gear ratios are dependent on the track of course, and I only monkey with the final drive. I basically make it so I'm comfortably in 6th before the braking zone at the end of the longest straight. If its a predominantly tight track though, it's less of a concern.

I deliberately added 'upgrades' to the Gallardo Superleggera, in an attempt to drop it from S class down to A. I thought it was impossible, but I eventually managed to find a set of heavy rims that just dropped it down that extra point to A600. I'm going to look for any other cars that I like that are borderline, and see if they can be lowered.

Didn't you have some sweet technique to make even the best cars F100?

I think they patched most of those glitches a while ago.

So can I ask how it worked?

Ah, no, there certainly wasn't any technique involved. :p I just stumbled upon a glitch that made the R33 GT-R seem as if it was F100, even though it was S666. No idea how it worked, but yeah, they patched it. Well, I'm not sure if it's still possible to create the glitch through trial and error, but I certainly can't use the car online anymore, or sell it, or set times with it. So it's basically useless.

You can drop the PI of RWD cars (all the ones I've tried anyway) by converting them to AWD, if available. Also, the full rollcage nearly always lowers the PI by a few points.

On the subject of engine swaps, I quite recommend the Soarer V8 swap for the Supra. It provides a modest increase in overall power (which is great if you're tuning to class) and a significant increase in low-end power to give a nice, meaty, wide power band.

I don't like how engine swaps don't change weight distribution, just overall weight. It's a pretty well-known fact that a 2JZ (no shit) swap into the Altezza ruins the handling IRL, but in Forza it isn't a bad idea thanks to the smooth power band.

My rule for tuning cars is weight reduction, tyres, suspension, brakes, everything else (in that order). It used to be powaaaaarrrr but I wised up after a while.

Engine swaps do change weight distribution! Just tested dumping a big block into my Trans Am and it added an extra 1%, but I know I've seen bigger changes in other cars.

Oh neat! Clearly I haven't tuned enough in FM3.
One week! :D

Anyone up for a regular Tuning Challenge? Since it's often hard to get everyone together for an organised race, I was thinking we could try a time-attack style series where we tune cars to meet certain restrictions and run them on a track with the winner picking the next week's challenge.
If everyone is keen, I was thinking that Group B spec cars (with an A599 PI limit) on the Rally Positano full circuit would be a good start. The only real restrictions aside from PI are the weight and the engine capacity, so the options are wide open :)

I built an A589 4WD Ford Fiesta, it's got potential but the suspension is currently untouched and it still needs a lot of work. Not sure if I should stick with it or ditch it for an Audi Quattro, will see later in the week.

Totally forgot about that. Do you mean actual Group B cars, or just anything but to Group B specs?

Anyhoo, been busy tuning recently instead of saving for my classic Ferrari like I should be! I have a 2003 (I think) Mitsubishi Eclipse tuned to 275PI, very mild handling and a decent amount of pull for the class due to the V6. Painted it up in a similar design to my Ralliart GTO.

Also made two new 600PI cars, a 'Vette Z06 and a 911 997 Turbo. The 'Vette I've barely touched as there was only 10PI to work with, so it just has better tires (345s on the rear ) and a rollcage. It goes like you'd expect it to- sideways. A lot.

The 911 I gave a more thorough working, with new tires, sunspension, brakes and some lighter drivetrain bits. I also swapped out the engine for the tinkered version that the 997 GT2 gets. :D The only thing holding this back is that it doesn't turn as well under power as it did before. I put it down to the tires, as the fronts only get upgraded 10mm to 245s, whereas the rears were around 315mm to start with and have 2-3 upgrades instead of just one. Cutting back the rears would probably fix it, but then I'd lose out on acceleration as most of the power goes to them (81%). See other thread for pics. :D

I thought anything, but to group B spec could be fun. It was just an idea anyway, though there might be too much variation to make it really competitive. Suggestions for friendly competition are always welcome, I thought time trials could be good as it requires less commitment to a specific date, and when Sunday Forza was at its peak people regularly compared lap times leading up to the event.

I built up a 2000GT Skyline to B500, it goes pretty well. Not enough down low torque though, I put in the cam upgrades which gives it a sweet engine noise but it's not a particularly good setup for racing.

I'm still slogging through the races to earn money for upgrades, might get back into the livery editor and make my millions there like I used to.
