View Full Version : So who here actually pays for virus protection?

I mean, I don't think I ever have and I've never had a major problem with any of my computers, or phishing etc.
Also, what free software would you recommend nowadays? Always used AVG and Anti Vira, wonder if there's anything better.

I'm using Avira on my netbook but I am unsure if it's actually doing anything besides popping up the occasional ad asking me to purchase the premium version.

I'm using Kaspersky on my main PC and have been pretty happy with it, but I manned up and paid $20 for it.

Have previously used Norton but had to salt and burn my PC to rid myself of it, tried CA antivirus for a year while I could get it cheap, but then I could no longer get it cheap (and didn't like their auto renewal setup when buying it online) plus it had a few misfires by identifying crucial system files as viruses.

I just use AVG, never had a problem

Trend Micro Internet Security Pro is pretty cheap. It's pretty damn reliable too, havent had a single problem with virus's etc, it still connects to games fine (borderlands being a good example because of firewalls/ports).

Had Norton and McAfee on a few computers (always came free with something), exorcised them after the (usually) 12 months subscription. Been with AVG + Spybot 2 years now, no problems.

I don't even not pay for it! (not using anything >_>)

I've paid for them. I guess technically I paid for my current one as it came installed on the computer when I bought it. It's NOD32 and so far it's been fantastic.

only payed AV I've used personally is Norton, and yeah, lol.

Used avast for a while, but it liked to chug my system, using MS Security Essentials now and it's wunderbar!

I pay for G-Data Internet Security 2010 ($30 for 1 year) but the way it goes about things its a bit annoying. Like when it detects a so-called virus and deletes it without confirming it with me even though I know its not a virus. Also does a full scan without notifying me and its practically impossible to exit it completely if you need to (sometimes colliding with software)

Will probably move onto Avast (free) once my licence expires

Whats virus protection???

no i dont pay for virus protection, i dont like any of it, always slowing computers down, it pisses me off.
i merely regularly backup all my computers and files, so if ever i get infected i just rebuild.

I haven't had any problems since i adopted this approach and i download torrents all the time and go to risky sites.
plus having a sacrificial computer is always a good idea if ever there is something you are concerned about and ive got a couple old comps lying around perfect for that task

Yeah see I have a fairly similar mindset to a few here - I didn't have a firewall for about a year or two and never developed a problem! I often wonder about the actual use of these things since I did numerous scans and didn't find a thing after <_<

I've been running MSSE since installing Win7 (there's a thread around here that I started regarding this), and can't complain so far. If I were to pay for AV, I'd probably opt for NOD32, as it's saved my arse before where AVG and a few others failed miserably.

I've bought anti-virus software before, but I'm on free stuff now. Can't complain in any way.

I use Trend Micro as well. It was only $60 and came with 3 licences and doesn't seem to be a memory hog like Nortons was.

That's interesting . . . is it the security suite that does it or the actual anti-virus part? I'm actually planning on buying a three license set due to the last AV-Comparatives test (it dished out a mighty stomping even toping NOD32).

Which part? If its the software part it sometimes just keeps on asking you if the application is okay to run (only for the first time though), even though you just clicked on whatever program you wanted to use. It gets really annoying after a while if you install a lot of apps. Also I find that it slows down my internet somewhat with its constant checking

It'd be a much better program if it would let me be in control instead of it deciding everything for itself as if I didn't know anything about computers. Other than that, I've been virus free - running Malwarebytes every now and then to make sure but its come up clean

I paid more to get a Mac. Does that count?

I spent 3 years with that that crap Norten protection. I then learnt and get free protection from avast. Highly recommend and have never had an issue. However Im not an undersexed teen etc after porn so who knows.

This. But my computer use is depressingly boring at the moment. So my opportunties for getting a virus/spyware is somewhat limited.

I just purchased G-Data 2010 AV for three . . . I figure I might as well give it a fair go since it is probably the best paid AV out right now.

Ok, I now have MSE and Secunia PSI. Can't update them at work so I'll give them a run tonight and see if AVG has been missing anything.

Noticed on ozbargain that there's a UK website selling a digital download of Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 (3 user) 1 year for AU$29.95
http://store.v3.co.uk/?act=details&id=2278
Seems like a pretty good deal since you get extra features when compared to the standalone Anti-Virus

I've read reviews that it can slow down your computer to a crawl with not only the startup but general web browsing, would this be ppl with old CPUs or is it a common problem even on new pcs?

This, basically.

What I wanna know is why Jackie Chan is advertising for Kaspersky.

Currently running G-Data which caught an oddity in my temp files. Other than that it's been running quite fine -- however does require customization to get it there.

I've got Norton Internet Security only because I got it for free (my parents bought a 2 year subscription and it can be installed on up to 3 computers). It does make my comp slow as hell sometimes but it's better than nothing.
