Well I have a launch model CECHC02 60GB PS3 (modified to a 320GB last year by me) which served me well for about 2 years. Well apart from the player having cds getting stuck when i tried to eject them (used to have to use another cd to sort of loosen it to come out) the PS3 was working fine. Until, Wednesday that is. My new Dual Shock 3 came on the same day from play asia so I was looking forward to testing it out on the other game i got from the same order (Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan) and well, when i turned the console on the PS3 didnt recognize the disc. Thinking it may have been a fault with the game, i took it out and tried Uncharted 2, inFAMOUS and my Scarface DVD to see if it was just the one disc or if the laser really did kick the bucket. Well none of the cds worked so I took the PS3 apart (dont care about voiding the warranty, its way past its warranty anyway), and cleaned the Blu-Ray lens in it, hoping the lens was just dirty.

Well, no luck, it still doesnt read ANY cds whether they be Blu-Ray movies or PS3 games, PS2 and PSone games or DVDs whether they be burned or bought but thankfully everything else still works fine. The PS3 still turns on fine, ALL my PSN games, PS3 demos and PSone downloaded games all still work fine. The ps3 still gets online with no problems and theyre is no loading delay on using the web browser, playing the games and movies on my hard drive or accessing the PSN store.

Yesteday I bought a brand new KEM-400AAA laser with the deck (well as it stated in the ebay auction) from Hong Kong which should arrive by late next week/early the following week (cost me $71 inc postage). Anyway the question I was going to ask to users on here, has anyone bought a KEM or KES 400AAA laser from Hong Kong and if they have had any problems with the replacement laser that they purchased from there? All of the quotes I got for installation were absolutely ridiculous ($295?!! I can bloody buy a NEW PS3 on ebay for that sort of money) and they were USED "restored" Lasers which just makes theyre quote even more ridiculous, especially when I managed to get a NEW one for $71.

Anyway, how difficult is it to install it yourself if you have had previous experience dismantling PSone's, PS2's and PS3's? Last week I managed to dismantle the PS3 without a hitch when I was cleaning the dust out of the vents of the console so I have a pretty good understanding of what to touch and what not to touch. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

My only experience with lasers was buying a replacement one for a Dreamcast off eBay.

The item location was canada but the box (about the side of a film canister) was all chinese. And then I saw a DVD logo O_o

The actual unit was a perfect replica of a Dreamcast lens, but it was too loose on the threaded drive shaft, so it just slipped and didn't move once powered up.

So I never really found out if it was even a legit GD-ROM laser.

hey dalmation -- how did this work out for you? I've got the same model PS3 and trying to confirm that a) the KEM-400AAA is the right part and b) that it's not too hard to install. Be interested to hear how things went for you....
thanks

You're right. The Blu-Ray laser would not have given out on a 360.

Hey Well I struck it lucky in that my mate was strapped for cash and sold me his faulty 60gb PS3 for $30 (the blu ray player hadn't barely been used) and my PS3 now works like a dream. All I had to do was swap the logic board from my PS3 and put it in bottom of my newly acquired blu ray player. For all those interested I have found a reliable US Seller on ebay who is selling the laser WITH the deck for $90 inc postage with a 90 day guarantee. The KEM-400AAA lasers he is selling are the BROWN clip lasers, which are WAY better than the 'refurbished' dodgy White clip ones that come out of Hong Kong. (White clip lasers have a very high failure rate whilst most of the BROWN clip lasers are brand new 3rd party ones). Worth a plunge for those wanting to fix their launch model PS3s as Quantronix and Sony will be trying to charge you $250+ to fix your machine. Heres the link for those interested =)

My launch model Ps3 YLOD about 2 months ago but luckily i got a slim for free with my new bravia so it equalled out for me. The most annoying thing was the 4 years of game saves that have gone for now.
