Been tossing (lol) up between Civ Revolutions (http://www.mightyape.co.nz/product/Xbox-360/Sid-Meiers-Civilization-Revolution/1546462/) and Halo Wars. (http://www.mightyape.co.nz/product/Xbox-360/Halo-Wars/1552763/)

Any other suggestions? From memory I think Aran started one of these 360 strategy threads but I'm arsed (read: lazy) if I can find it.

What's the skinny on these games and also:

Universe at War
Red Alert 3
Tropico 3
SupCom

Should I wait for SupCom 2?

You probably could have posted this in the "I Need Convincing" thread. I'll leave it open for a bit to see if you get any advice though.

CivRev and Halo Wars are both supposed to be decent, I guess it would boil down to whether you want a strategy or an RTS. That Middle Earth Something Something II is supposed to be decent also.

For what it's worth, I really enjoyed Halo Wars. I know people complained about it being shallow, but for what it was (a console RTS) it worked really well.

Then again, I'm also a huge Halo fan, so you should probably take my recommendation with a grain of salt.

I don't mind shallow; I've been hooked on Sins for the last 4 months, playing it exclusively on PC, and that's pretty shallow. But in a good way if you know what I mean.

If the races are fairly balanced and the combat is decent (which in Sins it is) then shallow DOES have its place.

proviso: If you research Returning Armada as Vasari real quick (as I do) you are pretty much unbeatable.

I've heard Halo Wars is a bit shit from a lot of people.

Tropico 3 has a demo on Live, it's worth checking out. I'll be buying it as soon as I can find someone that's bloody selling it! :D That said it is less RTS and more god sim.

From what I've gathered, if you're a fan of the PC Civ's, CivRev will disappoint you.

Just as well I haven't played the PC versions then.

What about Red Alert 3? It's only ~$8 or so from 365games.co.uk and it is apparently pretty good. It also features cheesy live action cutscenes and Tim Curry.

All I've played on the RTS front on 360 was Tiberium Wars, and what turned me off wasn't the controls - it was just so bland, generic and uninspired. Don't play that one.

I've heard Halo Wars is a bit shit from a lot of people.

Compared to PC RTSes I'm sure it pales, but as far as console RTS games go it seems pretty good to me. Mind you I'm not really an RTS gamer, so my advice is probably best taken with a grain of salt. :P

Well yeah but Tiberium Wars has

Also Michael Ironside is way better than Tim Curry, Whyme! And Kane is the best villian ever.

Tiberium Wars is an awesome RTS for console anyway because it doesn't require much strategy, just build 100 mammoth tanks, steamroll entire map, enjoy overpoweredessness.

better than Tim Curry

I'm sorry, that's impossible.

Halo Wars is great.

Each faction (you don't get to play as the flood, which is a good thing because they're a pain in the arse and don't provide much) is well balanced and has a good number of unique units to keep it interesting. It looks and sounds great (which you'll appreciate if you are a fan of the franchise). And above all the control scheme works remarkably well considering the lack of mouse and keyboard shortcuts.

Personally I love it, and I consider myself something of an RTS fan. It's a fun RTS that you can get into quickly and have a good bash on. It doesn't take itself too seriously with the whole 'unit x is only effective against unit y' malarky, which is great for the medium it's played on.

I'd definitely give the demo a go.

My friend tells me that the Covenant always wins, because they can build some form of super unit well before the other guys and defense against it is impossible.

Great, if you have a headset and use the voice commands.

To further prove Aran wrong - in addition to Lazlow's unbeatably talented-and-hot Gina Carano argument - I'll also offer this:

http://theeriver.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/autumn-reeser-01.jpg

Furthermore, the statement that anyone is better than Tim Curry is actually factually incorrect.

So play Red Alert 3. I think I'll go and order it myself, too.

I'm a big fan of PC RTS, and Halo Wars kept me interested long enough to finish it.

The multiplayer annoyed me, though.

My friend tells me that the Covenant always wins, because they can build some form of super unit well before the other guys and defense against it is impossible.

The scarab? It's a powerful unit, sure, but isn't cheap or easy to make. When it's on the battlefield it's definitely an 'ooh shit' moment, but never has its presence made me feel like it was game over. The marines have enough powerful units of their own to take it down.

FrozenSoul80

I think he means the Prophet unit. It can sneak into your base and start attacking you with its beam weapon before you have even built some troops.
