View Full Version : What's the best use of the DS's touchscreen ever?

While playing Soul Bubbles recently, I was reminded of that infamous quote:

"Without doubt the best use of touchscreen ever and hands down the most impressive physics."

Then I started wondering, is it really the best ever? If not, what is? Which game has made the best use of the DS's touchscreen, in terms of originality/creativity, practicality, and/or quality of execution (ie. no sloppy unresponsive garbage)?

If this goes well enough, we could even have nominations and vote on them.

Two fairly old games come to mind, I think they both used the touch screen very creatively:

* Yoshi's Touch & Go - my first DS game so I remember this fondly

* Meteos - very fun (if at times shallow) game

Meteos

The World Ends With You. It ends up a cramp fest though, and it's a little unresponsive; but once you get a rhythm you can tear up the screen to an Awesome effect.

Its a scathing indictment of DS developers when people say a game as old as Meteos features the best use of the touch screen O_o

It ends up a cramp fest though, and it's a little unresponsive; but once you get a rhythm you can tear up the screen to an Awesome effect.I was going to say this, but really, the gameplay itself was basically tapping and scratching, and was almost the equivalent of button-mashing or waggle. Great game, sure, but not for that reason.

Having said all that, though, I haven't played many touch-based games, so I can't say what's better.

Mostly saying it to piss Mr_M off because I know he hates the game.

But really, it was the first few rounds of DS games that really did use the touchscreen as the gameplay itself, not just as an aid to other gameplay, like Meteos, and

That Kirby game. Shit was cash.

(I assume Lex means Canvas Curse).

That's what I think of when I see "Best use of touchscreen" ever. Those kinds of games don't seem to be made for the system anymore, maybe it really was just a fad.

My absolutely favourite would be Advance Wars: Dual Strike ~ The Dual Strike power makes you feel 100% more awesome as you're sitting there, looking into a single screen the whole time, and suddenly "I'm about to kick arse" music starts and you are looking at double the screen, with it taken up with your COs and flashing lights and awesomeness. Its equivalent is like you are sitting at your TV, playing a Final Fantasy game, looking at your single-screened TV, and when you summon something, your TV doubles in size and is awesome. Good times.

Hell, that doesn't even use the touch screen for touch, I just love its use of the second screen.

I've noticed that too, although Flipnote Studio and the upcoming WarioWare DIY are based around it (and use it well).

Though i havent played it: Pokemon Ranger.
Scribblenauts required too much touching and dragging, bad way to put the touch screen to use. Sometimes i get the feeling that if Scribblenauts had played similar to a Gmod game, everything mechanic's wise would be pretty smooth.

lol, I liked the controls and core gameplay so saying that isn't gonna piss me off at all. :p

What I hated was the fact that every single mode played exactly the same (so variety and replay value was non-existent IMO) and the fact that the game always hit full speed in five minutes instead of gradually scaling up like Tetris or Lumines. If those issues were fixed, I'd probably still own it.

Meteos is seriously right up there. Other than that, the Ouendan games are just amazing, and it's all thanks to the touch screen.

Witch touching. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doki_Doki_Majo_Shinpan!)

Also, anyone suggesting Meteos clearly doesn't know about scribble play.

Scribble...play?

You can easily beat nearly every challenge in Meteos by scribbling up and down the screen.

It's not as bad as deterministic play in Lumines, but it's still almost a complete game-breaker.

Oh right, you mean that thing Meteos nubs do when they first start the game, and consistently get shitty high scores compared to playing the game probably.

Yep. Definitely a complete game-breaker.

There's something wrong in my brain where I constantly confuse 'properly' and 'probably' around when I write them out. :psyduck:

I don't know about the BEST, but Project Rub did a pretty good job using the touch screen in interesting ways. Most other games just use the stylus as a mouse.

Have not played Metoes or Trauma Center yet.
