my copy finally arrived this week.
now that i hear some people getting it for under $70 i dont think my wait was worth it anymore.
except that damn its a great game.
im most impressed with how great it looks.
i loved SMG1 but back then i didnt have a nice big HDTV and huge stereo and heaps of great looking 360/ps3 games.
i just cant believe how SMG2 just looks current gen and awesome.

as for the game, im 20 stars in and plan to put a decent amount of time in this weekend.
loving it so far.
im liking the higher average difficulty. it does however have some seriously tough competition to be my fav game of the year.

I got 70 stars and saved the princess :D

Pretty awesome, how the game really has only just begun from this point, a whole new World opening up for instance

Such a fun game. :)

That slide level was awesome!

Which one? The tree one or the sand one?

Cobla
09-07-2010, 05:46 PM
That tree one I had to try like 20 times before I made it through...! :o Great fun though.

So does everyone have a favourite galaxy? I think mine would probably be Flash Black. Not all that challenging, sure, but damn is it fun!

Throwback Galaxy was fun (I even tried to see if the warp still worked :p), but it would have been nice if they'd done more that just the one level in the old style from Mario 64. I would have loved to see a few stars in that galaxy and have some levels from other Mario games too. They could have had a small starting planet and a launch star that took you to Thwomp's Fortress and on the next star it took you straight to a pipe where you've replay level 1-2 from the original Super Mario Bros in that 2D in a sort of 3D way that Mario Galaxy does, and maybe even found a level from Super Mario Land, Super Mario World or Yoshi's Island (Yoshi's Island would have been my pick) to throw in.

It also might have been more of an issue for me if a few of the other galaxies didn't look similar to some other Mario game levels.

I had a lot of trouble trying to finish that level (in World 5, I think it is) where you have the rock suit and you have to race through the whole thing as the rock. I died so much trying to finish it, but I was getting enough star bits (and always getting the extra life along the way) that actually meant my lives count was going up. That's when I found out that the maximum number of star bits you can collect on a level is 999.

You just reminded me I gave up on that level last night.

Back to it!

The trick is when you get to the bit where you have to bounce backwards and forwards off of the barriers, just let go of the control stick and let nature take its course

Already finished it nub!

And after only 500 attempts.

Now it's that ****ing monkey bowling bullshit to deal with. That DVD might actually come in handy.

Is there any trick to finding the green ones now? I've only found the first one.

Most of them are pretty easy to locate if you keep your eyes open. The make a tingly noise when you're near them, so just run through the level until you hear the noise and start looking.

Also note that some of them are placed out of the way using tricky camera positions. I found it extremely helpful to stop in areas where I had a good view of the level and use the C button to look about manually.

Found 9 of the green bastards so far. They're not so bad when the opening camera shots reveal where they are.

Goddamn Perfect Run fressin' frassin'. I'll probably give it a go with co-star mode so they can stop those damn circular lasers - that's the hardest part.

I've fully finished the first 3 worlds and am on my way to the 4th. I'm a bit stuck on second chimp challenge. I hate having to jump on all of the enemies in a row to get the score up.

Natrak
11-07-2010, 07:57 PM
I like those chimp challenges, they're hard but fun - it can be a bit soul crushing when you just miss out on the high score, but they're pretty good stars.

Got The Perfect Run done in co-star mode, it still took a good 20 attempts, though. Full credit to anyone who gets through that level on their own, it's a damn hard one.

Finished the game with 468 deaths all up - which is actually lower than I expected. :P

Best Mario game I've played tbqh.

Stevorooni

So are people playing as Mario or Luigi?

I've been picking Luigi

Natrak
12-07-2010, 06:31 PM
I probably played mostly as Luigi since the end of the story - Cloud Luigi is monstrous btw.

What other benefits is there to playing with him?

All I've seen is that it creates a ghost on the level once you've run through it with him.

Stevorooni
12-07-2010, 11:01 PM
Well you don't have to play as fat mario, that's one benefit.

I'm still not seeing why people hate the fluzzard levels so much. I've never had a problem with them. The levels I hate are the Chimp levels where you have to jump on all the enemies and beat his score.

Cobla

Does anything happen if you beat the ghost?

Natrak
13-07-2010, 09:03 PM
The Ghosts aren't really there for beating, a lot of the time they're there to show you tricks for getting through a portion of a level quickly or to show off a little secret you might not have noticed before.

borgster101
13-07-2010, 09:11 PM
Ah right so it's more like a 'guide' into the secrets of each level .. I was thinking there was some secret star rewards for beating the ghosts or something.

Hmm interesting .. at the moment I'm making my way towards 120 stars .. I've got about 90 or so now .. it's getting a bit more difficult to get the stars now with some of these challenges, love how pretty much every star is something unique in its own way.

I assumed they were ghosts of your Luigi run-through.

yeah but you're probably so awesome at the game that you found all the tricks the first time through so just thought it was going your usual route.

So I've got like 13 stars or something. It's really fantastic.

Isn't there a Pianta/Mario Sunshine planet? Can't wait to get there!

Natrak
14-07-2010, 08:12 PM
There's a Galaxy with Piantas and later on a Galaxy that's a rather nice throwback to a little something from Sunshine.

So after leaving the second fluzzard level alone for a while whilst I went back and got some of the stars I had missed in earlier worlds, I went back to it today and got the star on my second go! So happy right now I could choke a fluzzard.

I'm on 191 stars now, first 3 worlds are all gold.

Some of these green ones are getting rather difficult now

241 star bits

I was wondering how to unlock the final star challenge, it seems that I'm about 5000 star bits short. Where's a good galaxy for collecting star bits?

Natrak
21-07-2010, 12:14 AM
I'd say the Melty Molten Galaxy's second star (where you're rolling through a course as Rock Mario), I remember getting heaps of starbits from that one.

Blake has 119 stars. In previous 3D Mario games there have been 120 stars. In Super Mario Galaxy 2 there are 242 stars. Do you understand...what I am saying to you...right now?

Good god there are a lot of stars. Some of which make me wonder what Nintendo were thinking when they hid them. I think it was a bowser jr level where you have to get on top of a whomp then make a jump to an area that looks impossible to get to. I had no reason to ever look there had to resort to a guide for that one :/

Stevorooni
21-07-2010, 04:35 PM
I managed to find all of the stars without resorting to a guide.

Some were incredibly difficult though

Im on like 92 Stars and now have to go back and find all the comet coins I missed. If I have any advice to anyone playing, its to get them the first time round. lol.

fishfishmonkeyhat
21-07-2010, 07:28 PM
Yeah I missed the one on the last Bowser level and instead of killing myself and trying for it again, I finished the level, then realised I'd have to do the whole level again just for the coin.

That beat block level in double time has to be the most evil level known to man.

I'd say the Melty Molten Galaxy's second star (where you're rolling through a course as Rock Mario), I remember getting heaps of starbits from that one.

Spent an hour just repeating that level and got enough star bits, so I've unlocked the final star now...

.. which is ****ing impossible.

Finally beat the last bowser boss. Up to the rainbow road level now
Which seems insane!

So I just got the 120th star. Do the green stars just appear in the levels now? Or is there something I have to do?

Jay
30-07-2010, 11:17 AM
I think you have to feed star bits to Yoshi and make him TRANSF-OOOOOOOORM! Then they appear.

Go back to the final Bowser battle and beat it again. You should get an extended final sequence, and after that the Green Star Challenge should unlock.
