Didn't see a Mario Galaxy 2 thread on here, so I thought I'd get it going due to my current excitement over the release date announcement.
So, May 23rd. in the US, and PALGN has it listed tentatively as the 15th May (obviously that will most likely change).
Nintendo Summit announcement with patented "Sexy Trailer (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3178094)".

Wow, that's earlier than I expected .. and Metroid in June! Seems like enough of a window open for a Zelda release by Christmas 2010 ... pretty awesome!

The footage looks like loads of fun. I'm still not sold on Other M but SMG2 looks like it should be great, even if it does prove to be samey. Can't wait, I just hope 'mid year' means early June rather than sometime in August.
I should really get around to playing the first one some more. Everytime I pick it up, I just really want to play NSMBW

I'm the other way around; any time I pick up NSMB all I want to do is play Galaxy.

Completed the original over the weekend (not with all stars though), the game is still a lot of fun and a lot easier than I remember my original play through being.
Now I wonder if I should bother getting all the stars again, those purple coin challenges were a pain.

I've got a save game for SMG where I'm half way through getting all the stars as Luigi. Couldn't really be bothered doing more that that. Sure it was nice playing as Luigi in a straight platforming Mario game for the first time since Yoshi's Island (for me anyway), but I don't know what everybody was complaining about with Luigi not being in these games.

It's the 'non-official, guesstimated' release date, derived from the confirmed European release of June 10th. Not even the official Nintendo site had a specific date listed last I checked (which was, what, Friday?).

True, although I'm severely p*ssed that we've got to wait even LONGER than the EU date (better part of a month). I'm sorry, but June 10th should be more than enough time to get the game sorted and to our shores.

Nic Xtreme
17-05-2010, 06:27 PM
I'll still grab this locally via trade in. Work + Sakura Wars + All the other games to play mean I can wait.
Plus, although I know this will be an amazing game, it's not one of those MUST PLAY ASAP titles, like a new Ace Attorney game, or what Metroid will be if I have to wait a month...
borgster101
17-05-2010, 11:08 PM
I don't know I'd put Galaxy up there as a must play ASAP ... but that doesn't mean I'll worry about importing if the wait is only a few weeks, especially when you factor in shipping and the fact that there's other games currently being played anyway.
So yeah I semi-agree with you :p

And I have to say I disagree with notions that the game shouldn't be getting 10s because it is a sequel and uses similar game mechanics to its predecessor. By that rationale no FPS ever should get a 10.

This is a ridiculous, borderline insane argument that should have died years ago (or, more to the point, should have never been conceived). As much as numerical systems are a pain in the butt for the writer (less so for the reader, since a number can make the opinion of an inadequate review clearer) you're not going to hand out 10s, why even bother scoring out of 10? If perfection literally cannot exist, why factor it into the scoring? It seems to be a complaint that only gamers ever bring up, too - ever see anyone argue that The Godfather doesn't deserve 5 stars? 10 just means 'you should really...really buy this game'.

Maybe it's just me. I tend to think mathematically and 10/10 or 100% or whatever you want to call it just seems to be unachievable to me. Just my opinion.
borgster101
24-05-2010, 11:30 PM
See you're thinking about it the wrong way.
100% in a review context doesn't mean a "perfect score". Let's look at a common example where scores are used; exams. If you get 100% it basically means you got every question correct, hence a "perfect score", it's a lot more quantitative.
However this is only the case in exams that feature right or wrong answers, like multiple choice questions, or science/maths sort of exams where the answer is right or wrong.
But then in say an English exam, or anything where you have to right an essay and give an opinion piece, it's a lot more difficult to assign a numerical score. Hence, the highest mark may just be an A+ ... or even if you do get a numerical score, 100% is a subjective judgement by the marker and it doesn't mean you got "everything right", it just means you constucted an excellent argument weighing up both sides and there was nothing signficant that was missed or has a flaw in logic etc.
Reviews for games (or any medium) is a lot like the second example (i.e. the English exam) where there is no pure "right or wrong" and therefore 100% in this context does not mean "perfect", it simply means that the game in question provides an outstanding level of entertainment that has no signficant flaws that hinder the experience. Of course the game will have flaws (there's videos of glitches on YouTube for example for many of the top scoring games), but these "flaws" are so insignficant that they don't affect the enjoyment of the game, and hence it warrants the 10/10 score.
Halt, Hammerzeit
25-05-2010, 09:56 AM
That's your opinion on the matter, and I have mine. Let's just agree to disagree about this.
Still think its rediculous that GTA4 got a 10/10 from IGN. None of my friends truly enjoyed it as much as San Andreas and a couple of us couldnt even bring ourselves to finish it. Looking forward to seeing if this is actually that great though because the last Galaxy was amazing.

Think of the number more as a category, rather than a score. Edge magazine's original definition of 10/10 was "Miyamoto".

I've had this for a week now, just finished with 120 stars this morning. I cannot, cannot, CANNOT insist enough that you all need to get 120 stars. Best Mario surprise ever. Here's a hint: it's not Luigi, and it opens up a lot of new gameplay.
For those who are curious, or need motivation, spoilers are below. Note: it's not story related, so it's not really a huge spoiler? But anyone intending to perfect the game already need not look.
Once you collect all 120 stars and beat Bowser, something called the "Green Star Challenge" unlocks. Basically? It unlocks another 120 secret stars that are strewn throughout the levels you've already completed. The game actually has 240 stars to collect. 120 is only the halfway point. Best Mario game ever!

So your reward for finishing the game is that you get to play the game again?
Yeah, but it's a lot like Master Quest. Same levels, but an entirely different skill-set is needed to obtain the extra stars. Whereas most normal stars are set up so that you're led down the garden path and what you need to do to obtain them is quite obvious, the green stars are just there. It's entirely up to the player to find them and figure out what's required to obtain them.
As an example: I spent half an hour scouring a level looking for one until I finally noticed it peeking out from behind a rock. The catch? The rock was at least 3-4 long jump distances away across a sea of lava. The only way to get the star was to have a full health meter, and successfully bounce Mario across the lava, hitting the star on the last bounce.
Not all the green stars are this crazy, but many of them are intensely satisfying to grab. My guess is that by the time most of you are done with the game there'll be a perception that hitting 120 is when the real game starts.
Not to say that the first 120 stars aren't challenging, they are, oftentimes moreso than the original Galaxy, but the green star challenge is a whole new layer unto itself.

Four stars in and absolutely loving it. Why did I spend most of yesterday not playing it? I can see myself taking tomorrow off work because I've sat up too long tonight, what between this and the World Cup. Mario Galaxyitis with a touch of Brazil v Ivory Coast Flu - can I get a medical certificate for that condition?
So I managed to drag myself in to work today, but not before grabbing my 12th star this morning. Say what you like about Nintendo, they know how to make awesome video games.

i ordered a copy from CDWOW (as soon as the UK/Aus releases were announced) and it took a week from the actual UK release to send me an email saying sorry we have no copies "due to not getting their shipment from their supplier" so now its only a week and a bit till it really comes out here and there is NO way my UK copy will get here before then, so really i gained nothing (though it was only $66 AUD)
and i am itching to play some mario.
though RDR and Bioshock 2 should keep me occupied. But id still rather Mario

Oh man, that really sucks. I would have thought for sure it'd have turned up by now, particularly since my copy shipped the day after yours. I can definitely imagine the local copies of the game staring you in the face would drive you nuts.
I'm about 8 (I think) stars in. So far I'm digging the new structure, it feels like there should be a lot more variety than in the first game - rather than doing multiple stars from the one world based around a certain theme levels seem to be limited to two stars each before you're moving onto the next one which is usually quite different from the previous.
Annoying that your stash of lives still doesn't carry between play sessions, but at least they're very easy to accumulate. At this early, not particularly challenging stage, I'll regularly find I've amassed 20 without even realising. Not sure why they continue to bother with the whole 'Lives' thing at all, really.

About 35 stars in now, it's great. The prankster comets just keep coming, lol - guess they won't stop until there's been enough to correspond with my Comet Coin tally. Found they really had me in '...just one more star' mode. :P
When one of them had 'Purple Coins' in the title I might have physically gulped - got that one done in one attempt though (by the skin of my teeth).
Have you done the flip world purple coin challenge? Arrrghh!
Natrak
27-06-2010, 02:52 AM
Nope, but dear god I had enough trouble with Flip World in the first place - constantly fighting my instinctual shaking of the wii remote at the tail end of a jump. I can't imagine having to collect purple coins to a time limit with prankster marios tailing me at the same time (I assume that's what it'd be) :P
You got it in one. **** me, the game gets truly challenging real quick.
banjoeskimo
27-06-2010, 03:59 AM
Are any of you using the co-op mode? I find having a second player can really help. Unlike the first game, player 2 is actually useful this time; they can attack enemies, grab coins and even activate checkpoints for you.
Natrak
27-06-2010, 03:47 PM
So the Flip-swap Galaxy wasn't so bad. No prankster Marios giving chase so I could afford to be a little more measured than I imagined. It still took several attempts, but it wasn't annoyingly difficult.
40 Stars.
Filthy Old Drunk
27-06-2010, 04:42 PM
The first time I did that one I accidentally jumped into one of those electric barriers, but I got it on the second attempt with a few seconds to spare which was surprising considering the ones that trouble me are the timed ones. I'm not a gamer who likes to rush through things so when faced with having to do something quickly I usually fail more times that I should. It just seems kind of a cheap difficulty to me. I'd rather more complex platforming elements or harder enemies to test my skill rather than "kill these enemies/collect a bunch of bullshit purple coins within x minutes". The two that have troubled me the most - which is not a lot or anything, just the two that took me the most times - were the ones where you had to kill the crabs and the spiney guys. I'd always miss one or two.

Natrak
29-06-2010, 02:08 AM
Aye, at first there are some groups of coins that're just like 'Now how the hell am I supposed to grab those!?'. Without realising I could wallkick I had to take advantage of the gravity changes; the room in the upper right corner was a bastard.
It's not too bad once you figure out your preferred order of tackling the rooms and find quick ways to clear each one. But in the meantime it's pretty brutal.
banjoeskimo
29-06-2010, 03:27 AM

Okay, so I didn't really like the spring suit in the first Mario Galaxy, and was a little miffed to hear that it was back. I was right. It's sooo annoying. OMG.

I didn't like the spring suit either. It was harder than other suits to control and jumping on enemies was just annoying. The annoyance factor outweight the usefulness of jumping really high.
I was never really a fan of the frog suit in Mario Bros 3. Sure it made you swim a bit fast, but you couldn't attack. I prefered having the tanooki suit, tail or fire flower for underwater levels.

178 stars (worlds 1-3 100% complete). The Green stars are pretty cool, the sound they make makes them a little easier to locate, but some of them are pretty obscure. Went and got the green stars from Fluzzard's levels early so I'd never have to deal with that stupid bird again. Also grabbed the green stars from the Rolling Coaster Galaxy just so I had the rolling ball stuff out of the way as well.
On Wii games - there aren't a lot of 'must haves' (Galaxy 1&2, Prime Trilogy, Twilight Princess, Brawl and possibly NSMBW and Mario Kart), I think, but there's a bunch of games worth checking out. Zack & Wiki, Disaster: Day of Crisis (although I can't personally recommend it, not having played it), Dead Space Extraction, MadWorld and A Boy and his Blob are some games off the top of my head.
Both Lost Winds games on WiiWare are sure to please as well - in fact, I'd almost consider them must-haves. I also highly recommend Bit.Trip. Runner if you don't mind constant death followed by sweet sweet success.

Give her a second Wii remote while you play. She can do the easy stuff like pick up coins / star bits and hold / attack enemies for you. And since the second player can't die your 1UPs won't be at risk.

I'm not understanding the hate that everyone has for Fluzzard. I don't seem to be having the problems that everyone else is. Granted, I've only down 2 Fluzzard levels and just stuck with 1 star from each for now.

Fluzzard is a jerk and they should have just given us regular controls for steering him rather than forcing remote tilting

Yeah the tilt controls are shit. Dying because you're unco is one thing, but when it's due to crappy controls I find it rage inducing.
In unrelated news my Wii spacked out (yes that's the technical term, look it up) the other day and my save file with 87 stars was deleted! Heart breaking.

I actually quite like it, just like the ball levels. It's different and it's only a couple of levels (so far).
Edit: Cobla: Go to Gamefaqs and get a save file.

Didn't have an issue with these levels myself. The first 2 stars were done like that and while there was a little frustration trying to get the comet coin in the second fluzzard level I did it without destroying my wii remote, got close though.
Stoney storm (I think its called that) Galaxy can **** off and die for all I care though. I don't think it was that hard I think I just got into a dying rythm.

First two Fluzzard stars weren't really a problem, I just didn't find them fun. Fleet Glide Galaxy is a pain, though.
The thing about Fluzzard's stars is that even if you ignore the unresponsive controls they still suck because they don't do any of the things that make Mario games fun.

I'm currently up to 138 stars (120 + 18 green) but haven't played since sunday as I didn't want to over play it. I'm gonna hate the fuzzard green stars as I already hated those missions. I also hate the spring costume...worst costume ever created.
I kinda find it annoying though that Nintendo has just regurgitated some of the levels from the first game.
I'm...stuck. On the water level, where you ice skate, the second star you have to get where you keep swimming down and down and you have to find the key to unlock the star at the start?
When you're doing the swimming down part, where it's sort of like 2d platform, there's a switch you have to push while you're underwater..how the **** do you push it? I tried (and tried and tried) to dive down into it thinking that would push it down..but it didn't
how the **** do you push/pull/move it??

Can you shake the Wii remote and flick the switch by spinning in to it?

Can't you spin the underwater switches?
Edit: Beaten to it.
ohhhh of course
my gf played the first part of that level, so I didn't really have much time to **** around underwater..tried everything except shaking the mote, didn't even consider it -_-'
thanks guys

241 stars done. The 241st star was pretty challenging, but checkpoints made it doable. No idea how to get that comet coin, though.
Jesus I have 20 stars. Jeeeesus

Got the comet coin, just needed to spin earlier than I was...but ohhhhhhh shit. "The Perfect Run" is hard.
At least the choices of music throughout are epic.
What do the comet coins get? I've gotten like 90% of them so far, recognising that at some stage I am going to have to come back and get them all..

Comet Coins are what get the prankster comets to show up, so if you want 120 stars you need to collect every one of them.
Oh. I haven't had a prankster comet yet <<

Yeah, they don't show up until you've collected a certain amount of them.

102 stars now. Worlds 1 and 2 are 100%, 3 and 4 are getting close

The spring suit controls fine, lrn2gmnbs.
I beg to differ. It is ****ing retarded. Very, very frustrating. We don't all have the skills of a Blake. Or an Aran.

The spring suit's not that bad, it's just annoying when your timing's just a little off. Thankfully that part where you use it to jump over Chomps can be achieved with backflips anyway, using the spring suit to climb the area after that is relatively easy. You only need the suit for a total of 2 stars out of 242 anyway iirc, it's not that big a deal.

Really have to play this some more. Up to 38 stars now; just up to the third Galaxy of World 3. I also watched the tutorial DVD today after hearing about some cool advanced techniques on it. Done most of the stuff already but the spin quickly followed by a kick was new to me, must try it out next time I play. The game is continuing to get better and better..

The spring controls are fine if you're moving forward in one direction, it's just a bitch when you need to turn around. I've seen many a player try to do precision jumping in the spring suit and fail utterly. At some point it's like playing Burnout; if you try to turn around in oncoming traffic you're just going to get reamed. You're better off just leaping headlong into danger and hoping for the best. This is especially true in the level where you have to jump forward over chomps on a narrow path. Don't turn around, just go for it.

Or don't grab the spring suit at all and backflip over the chomps!

Oh. I haven't had a prankster comet yet <<Yeah you have to get 4 stars from World 3 before any comets appear, as well as get all the regular stars (ie. not hidden stars) from the level where the prankster comet will appear.
After that there's a few other triggers to determine appearance of further comets... the number of comet medals you have (doesn't matter which) and also no purple coin challenges will appear until you've completed Puzzle Plank, no cosmic clones until you've completed Cloudy Court and no daredevil comets until you have at least two comet power stars.
So it's a pretty complicated system, but once you've completed the above pre-requisites all you need to worry about is the comet coins themselves.
