So is anyone else looking forward to this? I wasn't that much until I played the swordfighting game with Wii MotionPlus on Wii Sports Resort. Hopefully it'll be similar to that. No reviews as of yet, but this preview (http://wii.gamezone.com/gzreviews/p38025_03.htm) seems to have a good impression.

It looks like it is everything the first Red Steel was supposed to be. So yeah it's looking good.

A copy of this just arrived in the mail. Woo! I need to go out and buy a Wii Motion Plus before I can play it, though...

Yeah, that's great and all but this time around you can switch between guns and swords whenever.

Plugged about half an hour in before. First impressions - the graphics are awesome, the shooting controls are solid, the sword controls are great. It's a bit of a shock when you first start waggling like a dickhead and nothing happens - you actually need to do the proper actions, and put a bit of gusto into it, to pull off a sword attack. There's been absolutely no issues with me trying to pull off one move and pulling off another instead yet, the game is great at recognizing movements.
The 'normal' default turning speed is a little too slow, but the controls are otherwise pretty good. Seems like it might be a bit of a winner so far.

I'm kinda looking forward to this, but since every Wii game I look forward to ends up being a huge disappointment, I'm not getting my hopes up.

You can actually do that in the game. Wait until some sword-wielding guy does a jumping attack, completely unguarded, and then BAM! :p
I like it so far. It's definitely exceeded my expectations, but I hope that damn QTE was a one-off! Argh!

My thoughts exactly but the reviews have looked promising so far.

I've played about an hour of this, and..........well, I'm not sold on it as yet. It's a cool game, much, MUCH better than the original (no murky graphics, controls are finer-tuned), but that said, I'm finding there's some things that are spoiling it for a me a little.
First and foremost, I honestly don't know WHY developers like this INSIST on not having the crosshair 'fixed', a-la PC shooters. Why they can't make these games and have the crosshair be in the center of your view at all times is beyond me. It feels loose and unnatural, and it bugs the hell out of me!
Secondly, I've found the controls a little hit and miss. One-on-one with an opponent is fine, but I've been finding that once I'm the middle of a battle with several opponents, the Wiimote seems to not recognise some of my slashes and the like. It's not a super-regular thing, but when it happens I'm finding myself cursing like a motherf****r because it's not responding and I'm getting my ass kicked.
Honestly, this is what the original should've been, and I mean that positively AND negatively, the negative being that, well, it feels like a first-gen Wii release, not something that should be coming out years AFTER Wii's release.

It could be that you're just not putting enough oomph into your swings. I felt a bit like this at first, but soon realised it was because I'm so used to slight flicks of the wrist being sufficient that I was forgetting to really put some force behind my remote/sword. Treat it more like a real sword!

Thats good to hear as the flicky wii controls piss me off and cheapen the whole wii experience.
Played a few hours of this so far, and I'm really enjoying it. Really nice graphics for a wii game, kind of a rip off of borderlands, but it looks awesome so I'll forgive them. The controls are good for the most part, but sometimes they simply just don't register properly - still, it's so much fun to play that most of the time it doesn't matter. The only thing I really don't care for is the story, which is a shame because the setting and style are cool.
Overall, the best Wii game I've played in a while, certainly the best Wii FPS.

Nice, sounds good :)
I will have to get this .. but will have to play when I finish a couple of other games .. is it going cheap anywhere at the moment? Otherwise, I'll probably just wait it out for now.

Hang on! A decent FPS on the Wii?! Corr, you're having a laugh mate.

Well, if you wanted this you can crank the dead box size alllll the way down and set the dead box sensitivity up and remove smoothing... It'll be like what you say, but the dead box is there for a reason, the wiimote isn't a mouse...
I think it's pretty ingenious that the slash/camera movement issue is solved by the "one enemy at a time" lock on system. I can't tell you how satisfying it is to do "The Storm" finisher when the red icon appears is too... really sorts out the "what if someone is behind you?" dilema.
Each of the moves is quite awesome... my particular favorites are "The Shot" and "The Eagle". Sure, it's not 1:1 combat, but it's fun anyway. If only this was what we got at launch...
Love the graphics, love the game play, but the story is abysmal. Hey, but most FPS stories are dodgy, so I expected that, but it's actually a step back from the first (which was horrible).
Exceeds my expectations :D

I gave this a rental this evening (paid the extra to hang onto it for a week), I've played the first couple of hours and as you get into it it really gets quite fun.
I'm going to have to take the plunge on this I reckon...damn you Natrak!

Does anyone know if there's any reason to collect the tokens and sheriff stars besides cash? Does the game count how many you collect?
I like that you can calibrate the controls - how much/hard you need to swing - depending on how much of a lazy arse you are.
I like the game, but I don't entirely like the new setting. As silly as the first game was story wise, I really liked the setting. If they expanded upon that with the new sword mechanics then I would be happy. So far all the missions feel like the same areas. And going back to the dojo all the time to get mission data is silly. It's one of the reasons why the story is pretty terrible imo. It doesn't feel like there's any flow. Go here, do that, return. Learn some new moves, repeat repeat repeat. I'm hoping it becomes more fleshed out as I progress.
I enjoyed the QTE on the truck though. Visually it was pretty cool, but it made me shamefully aware of how little I play the Wii :P
The sword mechanics are the best part of the game and rightly so because in the original they were shithouse. The new finishing moves are awesome. Shooting is nothing special, but I love that you can swap between gun and sword so easily and quickly. Capping knees has made things easier.

Big swings, use special moves whenever you can (guillotine is good because you jump, and the 360 degree one is cool too). Keep A pressed, block an attack, then go in. Use the widest slash possible and utilise the side step (hold left/right direction on analogue, press A) as much as possible. And finally, use the gun. Seriously, capping somebody in the knees, or preferably in the head if you're used to the controls, makes things easier because it buys you a bit of time. That big mother ****er with the huge hammer was a bastard, but once you side step, wide slash then run away when he turns around, repeat process, he becomes much easier. And there's a parry you learn that will block big attacks.
Half the difficulty, for mine, is due to the wonky sword camera.

Yeah, I'm using big swings and special moves plenty, I think my biggest problem is avoiding damage. I've yet to get the hang of recognising when to use the correct parries and such. The guns have been handy for getting me out of tight spots. :P
I've actually found the big jackals easy, although I very nearly got owned by the pair of them that come out when you're opening the gate in that garden area.

I think this is a real quality game, and one of the best Wii games in a long time, possibly ever.
However, I don't feel like playing it atm (too many other games to get through), and I don't wanna pay $100 for it, so I'm gonna return it and maybe pick it up later on when the price drops.
Still, I highly recommend it to all Wii owners, especially if you can rent it or give it a 7 day trial. This is something you need to play at least once.
Dude, just finish it, it's not that long of a game.

As soon as you get "The Tiger" you don't even need to know which direction to parry. You just spam "The Tiger".
Anyone been getting Red Steel Elbow with this? A lot of reviews have mentioned it's uncomfortable to play, but I didn't notice :P I guess if your arm hurts, you should crank the sensitivity down.

No arm pain, but I'm getting motion sickness from the game. After about an hour's playtime, I stop because I feel sick.
Aside from unlocking special moves, does the game get any different? Is there any variety to the setting, missions, enemies in the later parts of the game?

I played Infinite Space for three hours straight and my arm got sore from holding up the DS.
I played Red Steel 2 for hours at a time with default settings and had no pain or discomfort whatsoever. :p

Good Game claimed that the game isn't fun to play because your arm gets so sore, and marked it down pretty hard.

it's because they're pussies. Think of it this way: when was the last time you can imagine the guys from good game going out and doing some arm exercise.
Maybe you wanna try stretching or something if you have problems?

I have it set on 'relaxed' so I haven't had any sore arms and I also haven't played it for more than two hours at a time. I imagine if you put it on 'athletic' and played it for a few hours your arms would be sore.
**** motion controls anyway. They're shit as.
I dunno about this game. I feel that if it wasn't on the Wii it would be rated as a bag of balls, but because it is, and there's little else available, people have rated it higher than it deserves. Or, I could just have a differing opinion than everyone else :P Besides unlocking the new moves, what else is going on?

Just finished it, and while it's not the greatest game ever, I definitely had a lot of fun playing it. A few things though:
- The bosses were way too easy, especially the last two. I was playing on easy mode, but I seriously didn't take more than a minute to beat either of them.
- I don't know if it was just me (I didn't destroy crates every time I saw them), but I don't think it's possible to unlock everything in one play through. Disappointing, really.
- The end was terrible. Just like the whole story, really.

Basically, there's a short cutscene where you say to Shinjiro "you want my sword?" then stab him in the stomach. He then says something about other clans that will come for it, and you break the sword in half, throw your half away (he's still got the other half sticking in him), and then stand under a tree looking into the sunset. Absolutely no resolution with respect to the other characters.
I guess despite the fairly weak story, I still felt they could have given us a bit more at the end.

That does sound like it might be bad. Still, seeing as it's a 'revenge' story, all it really needs is the main character killing the bad guy and it works. :p

It's not like the secondary characters were even fleshed out enough to need anything resolved anyway.
So far the cable between the remote and nunchuck is the biggest problem in this game. Gret fun but im sure itll sell terribly.

Maybe the technology is not reliable enough to make it standard yet? Like I said, I bought a wireless nunchuck that was said to be the best in the world, and it was absolute rubbish. I'm guessing Nintendo couldn't come up with anything better so they left the cable in.
Besides, there was no need for it to be 'wireless from the start'. There weren't/aren't any games that require you to hold your arms that far apart.

Sure you don't "need" to have them that far apart in most cases, but cords always get in the way. I remember playing some game that required quick movement from both hands which would result in being whipped by the cord lol
I just don't see why it would have been a problem for them given the remote is wireless. Who knows.

lol, that happened to me once but the game was crap so I didn't really care. I haven't had a problem with it in any game I liked, so I guess it differs from person to person.
I just don't see why it would have been a problem for them given the remote is wireless. Who knows.
Maybe the fact that both halves of the controller are trying to wirelessly connect to two things at once (the console and the other half of the controller) results in a lot of mixed signals? That would be my best guess.

Lol, well probably not with a Nunchuk cord, but at least you get to tell the story.
Still to be clear on this, have any forum members paid to be whipped by Nunchuk cords or otherwise considered the activity?
