View Full Version : Hyper 198 Feedback Thread

Another month, another mag, and Hyper 198 kicks off in epic fashion.

First up, yep, this is it. This is the issue containing the results of the Readers' Game of the Year 2009 awards. We counted the votes and crunched the numbers, and got some results that you could have seen a mile away blindfolded mingled with some that had us scratching our heads in bewilderment. From the Biggest Disappointment to the biggest hit of the year, it's all here, as voted by you! Let the conversation/slander-filled debate begin!

As for the games, there are a-plenty. No less than 50 titles get the preview treatment as we check out the biggest hits that 2010 has in store, including Dead Rising 2, Alan Wake, Just Cause 2, Fallout: New Vegas, and Metro 2033. We also take another look -- hands-on, this time -- at Red Dead Redemption to see how it really feels in Rockstar's wild West.

Meanwhile, our reviews section comprises of 15 huge games, including Mass Effect 2, Heavy Rain, BioShock 2, and Aliens vs Predator. Which one scored the coveted ten out of ten? One of those? None? More than one? Find out!

Tech-side, we take Hollywood's biggest promises -- flying cars, robot butlers, personal communicators -- and contrast them against the technology of today to see whether those grand visions will ever be realised. Then, just for good measure, we make Jickle stare at Kate Beckinsale until he begs us to stop. He's weird like that.

The obligatory "more!" lies within the pages of Hyper 198, on sale from Wednesday March 3!

I saw something like this in N64 Magazine once. They got a physicist or somesuch and quizzed him about videogame technology and if/when it would be possible. Apparently, F-Zero style hovercars are due in 2015. :p

FTR, I'm pretty sure robot butlers/nurses already exist.

Then, just for good measure, we make Jickle stare at Kate Beckinsale until he begs us to stop. He's weird like that.

I think I know what happened here, and like everything else in life it can be explained with a Running Wild lyric...

There's that pretend sticker again, I see it every month. It's like:

"Gees Malcolm! You forgot to mention 'Over 50 Games Featured' on the cover!"

"It's cool-it's cool-it's cool. I have this convenient pile of adhesive circles with just that on it. Now I'm not sure if there's enough for a couple'a dozen thousand mags, so we might have to stick one on every second issue."

Good to see David Cage and Fahrenheit mentioned in the review of Heavy Rain.
This guy is pretty much making story driven adventure games viable once again, even if his games have a fair few "WTF??" moments.

Story driven adventure games have always been viable, they just don't have the Sony Hype Machine™ helping promote them.

Yeah, same. If only the story had continued in the same vein all the way through instead of kludging in jarring, bizarre elements.

I just read the piece on Fable III and am a bit surprised to realise I feel the same way.
I was enamoured with both Fable and Fable II during the 100 odd hours I spent with them. They're charming and accessible, undoubtedly fun (hence my 100 hours playing them), but I dunno if the quality is as superlative as I first thought.

lol @ Stakes Winner being mentioned as a terrible but expensive game! I remember seeing it in a magazine once and thinking that it looked awesome, and wishing they'd port it to the SNES so I could play it... probably better that that didn't happen. :p

Also, I read through the GOTY awards and just couldn't stop smiling. Batman and Brutal Legend getting recognised for art direction was awesome. FIFA 10 winning best sports game was awesome. Scribblenauts taking most innovative and biggest dissapointment was awesome (though I'm a bit indifferent to it winning best DS game). Monster Hunter Freedom Unite being runner up for best PSP game was awesome. Uncharted 2 and Batman in a tie for best game of 2009 is the best possible result. Getting quoted three times again, including the publication of a Running Wild reference, was very cool.

Though I am disappointed that there was no DATE FAIL for Valkyria Chronicles, possibly accompanied by a comment like 'So this game got no recognition last year, despite winning best strategy game of '08? Hmm...' :p

In the Heavy Rain review, Darren kept asking if it was a game or not. Answer: Yes, yes it is.

It also said that 'It takes nothing from the typical videogame barrel'. Nothing at all? I've been writing a blog about it and I've already come up with 5 or 6 paragraphs worth of stuff that was taken straight from that very barrel. If you're interested, I'll give you the link when it's finished.

It was interesting to read the Heavy Rain piece, and agree with what Cage tried to do, and then turn to the review and feel quite "meh" about what he's done... As for the question about whether or not it's a game, I couldn't help but remember the huge article written about Masq a while back... it elicited a storm of praise, what makes Heavy Rain less "gamey" than it?

(Oh, and if anyone can remember what issue that Masq article was in, could you tell me? I was trawling through my cupboard full of Hyper but all I found was dust and nostalgia :P )

Fair question, because I do hold Masq in quite high regard. I guess, for me, one of the differences comes down to the importance that each game places on its input. In Masq...

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1104/725461036_5e34699541.jpg

...there was always a range of options to choose from, and each one led to genuinely different consequences. There was no railroading, and even doing nothing at all was considered a valid option. Each reaction and response branched off accordingly. It's an amazing accomplishment for something that was only intended to be a proof-of-concept piece. Heavy Rain, meanwhile...

http://www.videogamesblogger.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/heavy-rain-screenshot-big.jpg

...often has you perform on-screen actions in order to advance the scene, not change it. Sure, there are a handful of moments that do have a genuine impact on where the story goes, but everything else around it is, more often than not, an illusion. Take Shelby's fight with the thug, for instance. You can hit every button perfectly or miss them all, and it'll still end more or less the same way. The game doesn't take the win or loss into account -- it's just window dressing.* Same goes for when Madison pretties herself up in the nightclub bathroom in order to attract Paco's attention: we're just performing the one action that the game allows us. Heck, the game doesn't even offer an alternative outcome for when he doesn't respond favourably. We're simply forced to make it so.

Masq lets you create a story. No doubt that was the intention of Heavy Rain also, but too often it resorted to simply telling its story.

All that said, though, I still consider Heavy Rain an important product -- Cage was right about that much in his interview -- and a valuable experiment that needed to be done if we're ever going to truly tap into the possibilities that the videogame medium holds. I'm still not sure that it's a game, but I'm positively sure that it needs to exist.

(*EDIT: Actually, that's probably too harsh a term, but they don't seem to serve any underlying purpose beyond what I mentioned in my review: they let the player (viewer?) read into them in their own ways. In your eyes, Shelby could be the private dick who's way past his prime but a nonetheless resilient bastard, or a guy sporting abilities in the fisticuffs department that betray the wrinkles on his face. So, yeah, I guess the scenes serve the story in that regard, but that's due to how the player analyses them, not how Heavy Rain incorporates them.)

IMO, Heavy Rain's rigidity (as mentioned above) is precisely what makes it a game. You get an objective, you must complete it. If you don't, the game doesn't progress. When you wake up, the objective is 'have a shower', and the reward for completing it is 'congratulations, now you can go downstairs'. Once you go downstairs, you get more objectives. Listening to your character's thoughts often works as a traditional 'objectives list'.

On the issue of games needing a system of risk/reward, it works as a game where you can set your own goals. Maybe in your eyes, failing to catch the Origami Killer is a fail. Or maybe you want the darkest possible ending, and failing to get everyone killed is a failure. Games where the only goals are player-set ones are nothing new- hell, SimCity on the SNES claimed it was doing just that.

Also, I disagree with your comment that you're merely pressing buttons to shunt the story forward (I understand this may have been exaggerated but bear with me here). There are genuine 'gaming' moments in the game, such as when you have to search for Shaun's teddy bear. Aside from the reward you get upon completing the task, how is that any different to Batman searching a room for a Riddler trophy? Or Banjo searching a room for a jiggy? You can't just choose to find the bear, you have to be good enough to find it. It's a genuine test of skill which you can fail if you're not good enough, and just like in the above eamples, the game can still progress if you do indeed fail. Nothing out of the ordinary IMO.

That's only some of what I've come up with so far...

Two things in the GOTY thing:

1. StorminNorman's comments re: Forza were printed twice. Just sayin'.

2. The two screenshots for Best Action Game, where Nathan Drake and Batman are punching a henchman in almost identical poses, made me laugh out loud. Whoever came up with that deserves a raise!

My mailman is so excited about hyper every month that he folds it in half and crams it in the mailbox, thus avoiding the convenient newspaper slot at the top. Some people like collecting stuff. I'm weirder in that I pretty much just enjoy the act of buying it in the first place and will inevitably sell it.

Downloaded games and content is probably the only reason I haven't sold my fifth xbox. The other four, sold, only one of which ever broke down (though the launch one was noisy awful). It's roughly a year until I can transfer the content licenses again, which should be just in time for Xbox Slimsixty.

Hey there Hyper mag people - please consider having a "letter of the month". Not for the sake of being gimmicky or giving crap away.

There need be no prizes, no no-prizes or any of that hullabaloo, just take that magic stamp with "dud" "most played game" etc that appears below Darren's piece each month by the "review score" info bit - change the colour and font and BAM, you've got a shiny new "letter of the month" stamp.

Then stamp it (usually) on the first letter in the issue, if there are only crap letters that month, then don't use it. But why not stamp the good letters when they arrive and encourage others to write in? It costs nothing and Malks could make a cool stamp variation in a nanosecond.

Come on Wilks/Wells/Worker Bees, add a letter of the month stamp. You know you want to!

The prize could be a downloadable indie game, they are cheap and cheerful.
All you need to do is purchase it and send the winner the registration code/ download information via email.

Can't see that happening on a monthly basis. But I like the idea. A downloadable demo or small game could be a 'prize' etc. One that uses an online code to activate the download like what publishers do with review code for certain games (sam and max season two) etc.

Interesting to note you just missed out on getting a Final Fantasy XIII review.
Ah well, it looks like we're going to get a comprehensive one next month!
From the look of the forums no one cares anyway. Heheheh...

Hyper, do any of you guys know what is happening to the PC Powerplay forums?
I understand they migrated over to the rather generic and boring cybergamer forum, But I'm hoping that the old forum will still come back in its own section at least.
I really hate it over there in cybergamer land, everyone is so bloody nice like Mary Poppins. Its like being on a christian forum!!

Apparently "the PCPP mods will keep up the high standards of moderating that was previously present on the forum, and will attempt to apply the same standards to the rest of the CyberGamer population if they want to post on the forum"

Bunch of fundamentalist missionaries, I swear.

Trust me, the cybergamer forums were already doomed before we got there.

I'm not interested in it, its by most of the same crew who gave us Final Fantasy X and X2
IMO, two of the worst final fantasy games of all time. Most critics have given it pretty average reviews as well, its no Final Fantasy 12.

So after reading the recent issue with the "Best of 2009" Films etc and "Anime" I could not help but notice all the non-anime titles mentioned such as Wonder Woman / G. Lantern DCU features.

I enjoy Anime, don't get me wrong - buy next year guys *please* consider changing the section to a better title. Something that includes "original animation" rather than just Anime. That way things like Mary and Max, Jasper Morello, the Marvel and DC animated features etc can be featured, if worthy.

But thanks for putting things in that were not Anime anyhow. At least Team Hyper was thinking outside the box. 5 team champion points to you all, now get out there and make this year a gold star year!

Long time sort-of-reader here, my local newsagent hasn't received issue 198 and was told it was canceled (Just about April Fools...) I'll have to track it down at another store.

Btw Mr.Mew are you still waiting on a Final Fantasy XII review?
That's almost as bad as me still waiting on the Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced2 review. Still at least your game did get a review if you look back through the issues :p
