What are a good price for one these days? I looking to get one, preferable a 1TB. I've seen WD My Passport Essential 500GB hard drives at Dick Smith for $99 and it sounds pretty tempting. Or should I get just a normal external hard drive and get more bang for buck in terms of storage?

I believe the normal ones are a bit faster generally, running at 7200RPM rather than the portables that (usually) run at 5600RPM. I'm not 100 per cent sure of these figures however, they may be out of date...I'm no tech head!

Oh, thats the cheapest I have seen a 500GB portable drive, I should go and get one, my old 160GB WD drive is doing strange things.

Personally I'd get an internal and a case for it.

There is good prices at MSY. For example Seagate 3.5” Desktop 500G for $79.

As warbane said, the best way is to get an internal hdd and buy a case for it, the hard drives you get in the externals you buy have a tendency to die earlier.

You also need to decide whether you want a 2.5" or 3.5" one, 3.5" need an external power source but they are much cheaper for the space you get.
