Is there anything worth revisiting on the old black and white machine?
I've got Link's Awakening but aside from that I can't think of anything that would really hold up after all these years (Pokemon is an obvious choice so aside from that too).

Metroid 2?

And why would you not play the superior GB Colour version of Link's Awakening?

Because at the time I only had a gameboy pocket (it was the colour version of Link's Awakening though)

I wish I never traded in all my old GB games. I still have a lot of them, but nowhere near the total I once had as a kid.

Wario Land(s)

Me too. I probably had some rare ones. Even then, rarity hardly matters when the boxes were made of cardboard and would submit to wear and tear. :(

Are you serious? There is a massive library of good games on the Gameboy. Many of them hold up better today than other 8-bit console games (due to their simplified cartoony graphics and lack of colour clash) and most old GB games are better than the many many crummy Gameboy Color games released - with rare exceptions.

Too many to list but obviously:

-Mario Land 1+2
-Wario 1,2
-Zelda
-Donkey Kong Land 1-3
-Kirby games
-Rod Land
-Many good NES games have a conversion on the GB, although some play differently

*I'll add some more later...

FYI - GB games look great played on the GBA SP and on the Gamecube via the adapter thingo. The best (legal) way to play them imo.

I think the only half decent 2D action games on this handheld are the Rock Man titles. But even then, they are inferior to the Famicom games - not just because playing on a black and white handheld sucks, but because in order for the sprites to be recognisible they need to take up a larger portion of the screen then they would on a console, leading to less elaborate stage designs that can also feel very cramped. But, you can say the same for most handheld games.

Anyway, Mario/DK/Kirby etc. are all way too easy. The first Akumajou Dracula game on the system (I think it's western name is "The Castlevania Adventure") is pretty crap, the second looks better but I've never played it. There's some Contra game that's actually pretty decent. As far as STGs go, Solar Striker and the Nemesis/Gradius games go are probably the best.

Ninja Gaiden Shadow is well worth a look.

The GB version of Batman is worth checking out. It's a really good platformer. About its only weakness is that the sprites are tiny, even by GB standards.

I looked into it a bit further and the games really haven't aged well in any way - which is a shame because I was keen for some cheap collecting.

Serpent/Kakomun Hebi is a kind of cool game, bit like a vs snake with some pretty cool music.

Trip World is a well playing albeit easy game but finding it is a nightmare, I've seen one copy once and it was cheap, but it was sold by the time the bastard got back to me with a shipping quote.

Motocross Maniacs is pretty sweet.

Snow Bros jr is a bit slow but still quite playable, pricey on ebay but I managed to get it for $5 at cash convertors, I wouldn't pay too much more then that for it.

Fortified Zone was kind of interesting, cruising around maze like levels shooting stuff.

Finally some of the SNK ports are surprisingly playable, king of fighters games and especially the first samurai shodown which has some awesome music.

I only have Mega Man 1 & 2 on gb and they're supposedly the worst ones on the system but yeah, horrible and barely even playable. The ones people say are good are a bit on the pricey side unfortunately.

Mario, Wario, Metroid & Kirby are the best games on the system imo, they don't suffer from being too slow like a lot of GB stuff. It's the only nintendo system where I like the first party stuff better then the 3rd party stuff.

Pokemon Trading Card Game!

Also I know I enjoyed Magi Nation when I was a kid but I'm not sure who it holds up now.

Mario Tennis on the gameboy colour was pretty darn fantastic fun. Although I'm not sure if it counts, being a colour game and all.

Kirby's Dream Land 2 is another underrated title that springs to mind.

Pokemon Gold/Silver are still fairly playable, and work on old gameboys.
However, yeah most titles have dated pretty badly. So unless you're into puzzle games you're mostly better off looking elsewhere for quality stuff.
