Let's see now...
8 characters? Pretty sure there was 30something in the original.
I think they were saying that there were 8 classic Bond characters such as Oddjob, Scaramanga, Jaws etc., along with the 30something Goldeneye characters. If so, that would actually be more than the original, wouldn't it? The original had about 4.
Special Game modes? What happened to selecting each rule as you wanted them?
The original had special game modes AND fully customisable rules. Why wouldn't the new game have both as well? They mentioned 'License to Kill' as a 'special game mode', which is what it was in the original. I'm guessing that with all the emphasis they're putting on multiplayer (Reggie made a HUGE deal about it when discussing the game at E3), the last thing they're going to do is remove features/options from the original.
And no Pierce Brosnan bond?
Craig is awesome, quit hatin'. ;)
Couldn't they have just prettified the N64 version?
IMO, stealth takedowns, improved melee, and improved tank sections are very welcome changes. :p
To me, it looks like they're making some pretty good additions to the gameplay, which is better than just porting a game which I don't think would stand the test of time.

Are you saying your version of Goldeneye on N64 had 4 characters? Or missing the point of what Splodey was saying.
Neither.
The video said '8 CLASSIC Bond characters'. It did NOT say '8 characters TOTAL'. It then showed footage of Jaws, Scaramanga and Oddjob. AFAI can tell, they are not referring to the Goldeneye characters who are essential to the story. When they say 'classic' characters, they're only referring to the bonus characters that were added in from other films.
Assuming this is correct, the number of 'classic Bond characters' in the original Goldeneye was four: Jaws, Oddjob, Mayday, and Baron Samedi. The new one has eight, which means it will have those four along with Scaramanga and three others (probably Dr No, Goldfinger and someone else). Ergo, while TSplodey feared that there was gonna be...
LESS stuff in this one?
...it appears that there's actually gonna be more, seeing how eight is a bigger number than four.
Keep in mind that these are 8 classic characters along with the 30+ Goldeneye characters such as Natalya, Xenia, Ouromov, Trevelyan, Valentin, Boris, and so on. After all, if those characters were removed, the story would make no ****ing sense would it? And besides, if multiplayer is such a huge focus of this game (as I mentioned before), cutting the multiplayer character roster from 30+ to 8 would be suicide, so it's not gonna happen.
Does it make sense now?
TSplodey
20-06-2010, 05:40 AM
The preview said 8 classic bond characters, not 8 more or 8 new, and 2 out of 3 of the ones shown are already in the original.
Game Modes also tends to imply that they are specific settings in their own little sphere, especially when they mention Paintball as a mode, which is a simple bonus unlock that I would expect to apply to every aspect of the game, hardly worthy of the moniker 'mode'.
For someone called Running"Mild" you are sure flipping out over what has been a rational discussion.
Well if the original had 4 classic bond characters, and the new one has 8 classic bond characters, how many classic bond characters does billy have in his new copy of Goldeneye 007 for his Wii?

ACTIVISION...
...ousted Pierce Brosnan in favor of the current Bond, Daniel Craig, for the role of 007...
...other than being a first-person shooter, this game bears little resemblance to the Nintendo 64 design.
It's pretty clear that Eurocom looked at the current generation for inspiration, namely the Call of Duty and Halo franchises...

Hey IGN gave the game a 9, I'm sold. DSE have it for $89 with the controller according to their catalogue, Big W is $100 tomorrow and JB have the 'classic' edition with the controller for $114. (http://www.jbhifi.com.au/games/goldeneye-007-wii/)
They obviously had to update the design anyway, Goldeneye was a great game back in 1997 but it's severely dated by today's standards. I just hope that the Facility level is still there in the same layout, I wanna sneak out of the toilets and start plugging people in the head!

Don't Activision own the rights to any Bond game?
That is correct, I'm not sure of the specifics but apparantly Nintendo have a stake in games related to the Goldeneye movie, it's basically what stopped a HD version coming on XBLA like the original PD.
Anyway, game looks pretty damn good, just watched the IGN review, I like how it's a modern "remake" of the original, which is more interesting than the same game in HD.
The game is really a retelling of the movie rather than the N64 game, though obviously exists due to the popularity of the N64 game, probably the first time a remake of a movie was done as a game :p
Cicada
03-11-2010, 06:57 PM
Activision own the rights to the James Bond franchise. Rare, and by extension Microsoft, own the rights to the design and content of the original game. Nintendo as publishers of the 64 version own the rights to the concept of a videogame based on the film Goldeneye. This tangled mess is why the game is a not-a-remake remake of Goldeneye only developed for the DS and Wii, not an HD port of the original.

I'm liking it so far, certainly some nods to the original, but it's basically all new ... it's new yet familar. Very nice intro song after the Dam scene, very Bond like :)

One thing I can fault it on is that I haven't really had a chance to be too stealthy. Even when I quietly take out a guard with my silenced pistol the others still get alerted then it just turns into a general shootout.
I used to be able to get through the first level of the original without even raising an alarm.
You've just got heavy feet Stevo. I'm silent like a ninja. I haven't had a problem with stealth (though I have been favouring melee kills for silent takedowns where possible).

Melee kills seem to work better with stealth approaches.
So is Facility, Complex and Temple in this?

There's a facility but apart from starting in a duct above the toilets, it's not really anything like the original.
Facility is a multi map but it's very different.
No, at least not open out of the box. Might be unlockable.
I just had the damn thing lock up on me at the end of the fifth level. Right at the end. Grrr.

Isn't the game something of a reimagining? Considering they can't actually go note for note from Rare's game. They can just follow the same/a similar story and include areas that are common to the property. I don't know much about the game, but it was my impression that none of the maps would be the same as the original.
Yeah, there are just knowing nods to the first game, but it really is a different game. And so far it's great. Not sure if it would be AS great if it weren't for the nostalgia factor, but it would still be the best FPS game I've played on the Wii so far.

Not trying to be a prick here, but that only indicates so much. How does it compare to other shooters?
It's a hard question answer, because a lot of it depends on how much you enjoy the experience offered by the Wii controls (I'm not using the Golden Classic Controller, really liking the Wiimote controls, though they can get tiring). I think (though I am no doubt in the minority) that they really help set it apart from other console shooters, and bring something to the experience that your run of the mill 360/PS3 shooter doesn't offer.
In terms of the pure shooting experience, there are many 360 games I would put ahead of it (I don't game on PC) in terms of polish - Half-Life 2, the Halo series, CoD etc - but I am definitely enjoying it for what it is. The level in the Barcelona nightclub was especially cool.
It does make the Wii hardware chug, however, when things get busy. but that kinda just adds to the nostalgia factor haha.

Cheers - sounds like a winning combo to me. I actually really enjoyed the original Red Steel as a fun no-brainer shooting game mostly because of the controls, so I'd love to give another FPS a shot.

My only question is did they keep the shithouse aiming?
As in when you aim the screen freezes and you have to move that crosshair like it was just coated in treacle or some shit around the screen on the N64 version.
The one thing I'd want from a godless eye remake - yeah it's a horrendous typo get over it - is dual analogue thumbstick or mouse equivalent rapid aiming.
So does it have something like that via the Wiimote / Nunchuk combo?
It has that CoD thing where you can aim down sights and quickly tap to 'lock on' to the next guy. It's not 100% accurate, because that would take all the fun out of the game, but it at least puts the gun in the vicinity of the target.

It's not a remake per se and therefore they didn't really "keep" anything. I don't think there was ever much chance of an FPS for the Wii, the console that pioneered motion controls that also has a dual analogue controller available for it (a special edition of which is bundled with the game in question) retaining the control system of a 64 game (a system notoriously limited by its single analogue stick), do you? ;)
As for the pointer controls, I'd say they're pretty much up to par for Wii shooters nowadays - it can certainly feel a lot tighter than Metroid, for instance. They're not as customisable as the Conduit but I don't think anyone really cares, considering the game itself is a whole lot better.

Semantics!
It annoys me that people actually used R to aim in the original. How hard was it to charge the controls to 1.2 and use the stick to aim..

I've been using the classic controller pro and it basically feels like playing Call of Duty on the 360 but with crappier graphics.

I'm playing with the Wiimote and Nunchuk, I'l use the Gold Classic Controller for other games that are best played with it ;)
Wiimote precision feels closer to a mouse than an analogue stick.

Hey I found a review of Goldeneye on DS (http://www.vooks.net/article-1424-GoldenEye-007-DS-Review.html) on Vooks of all places.

Now that you mention it, I think I remember hearing something about that before. I'll give it a go and see what happens.
Edit: You, sir, are a god among men!
Played 4 player split screen with mates last night. It was fun but we all just wished it was on 360 instead - due to GCN controllers being balls for fps and it looking like a GCN game too.
Didn't really dig that they went with loadouts instead of death match style pickups.
Golden gun was the pick of the game modes.
Oh yeah we all had a laugh at the "Quantum of Solace" post game award, awarded to the shittest player hahahaha

I'm sure they'll fix that in the first patch.
