Oh totally leaked by USA Today:
Among games in the works:
•Kinectimals lets you train and play with 20 different virtual cats, including a lion, cheetah and tiger.
•Joyride, a racing game, lets players use their hands to hold an imaginary steering wheel — pull your hands toward you and push back out for an acceleration boost — and their bodies to execute jumps and tricks.
•Kinect Sports has six activities including boxing, bowling, beach volleyball, track and field, soccer and table tennis. To serve a volleyball, you mimic the real motion; in soccer, you can kick the ball or do a header.
•Kinect Adventures includes a river-raft time trial and obstacle course, playable by up to four players. On the raft, playing as a duo, you and a partner must lean one way or another to steer. Jumping helps the raft reach special areas for extra points.
•Dance Central, in development by MTV Games, brings a So You Think You Can Dance experience home.
•Star Wars characters and iconic Disney favorites will be featured in separate new games being developed at Microsoft in conjunction with LucasArts and Disney.
"This is (Microsoft's) attempt to leapfrog the Wii and broaden the appeal of the Xbox," says Geoff Keighley of Spike's GameTrailers. "The questions are, 'Does the controller-free environment make (the Xbox 360) more accessible?' and 'Is it fun?' "

I just can't work out who they expect their market for this to be. Most of the people this appears to be aimed for would have bought a Wii and got sick of it already... I doubt they're willing to dive back in so soon.
borgster101
15-06-2010, 07:11 PM
All the games for the device clearly are aiming for the Wii crowd, the big question is will these consumers "jump in" to the Kinect experience at the price of a 360 + Kinect whatever that turns out to be.
The fact that there's no physical controller limits the software to casual only experiences though, the Wii has shown with the Nunchuk/Wiimote combo that traditional games can also work, which the PS3 Move will be able to handle as its basically identical.
But with Kinect, I can't see much else besides the casual experience, that's obviously what they are going for ... because the 360 clearly has already captured the core gamer, but this direction appears to further widen the gap between what is known these days as a "core game" or a "casual game", something that I don't think is the right direction, the gap needs to be bridged, otherwise we are going to have a segmented market.
Stevorooni
15-06-2010, 07:44 PM
There's nothing to say that they can't create normal controller games and have them also take advantage of Natal in subtle ways.
Like a first person shooter could track your head movements so that your avatar also moves their head to look around a bit (but not too much because you'll end up looking away from the screen!)

Yeah, but you'll still have to use a normal Xbox controller for these to work. Likely wouldn't get casuals exicted in moving into more sophisticated games, though they probably dont want to anyway.
This might get gamers exicted .. if the device was used in an interesting way that enhances gameplay, sadly it didn't look like anything like this was shown at the conference, they tried with the Star Wars and Forza I guess, but reports of the Star Wars game is that its like those FMV Sega CD games!!

So I've had a few cones and I've been thinking. You know they are saying that the controller is too 'complicated' for some people to play videogames and the answer is to take away the controller and replace it with your body?
Wouldn't you still have to memorize the same amount of body movements to controller button functions? In the average game that could mean minimum 14 to maximum 20+ specific human movements to memorize.
Just putting it out there.

f. pause game

All we really need is a headband peripheral so you can strap a Wiimote on your head for head tracking shenanigans, while using the other Wiimote for normal control.

This is a little bit dated but I'm yet to see anyone mention it, so I will bring it up anyway. A lead developer of Kinect was quoted as saying in an interview that it uses 10-15% of the 360's processing power. Apparently the "bone map" it creates of players was originally tackled by an on-board chip, but this was then removed to lower costs and the work is now routed to the console itself.
Seeing as I'm a fairly avid Forza 3 fan and Turn 10 is a Microsoft studio, I fear for the quality of their next title. It's an awfully large amount of power to be drawing away from AAA games that are pushing the console to its limits. :(
Really hope it's not true.

Just because the camera is polling your actions at 30fps doesn't mean the game's graphics have to be 30 fps as well.

Eurogamer scores (so take em with a grain of salt) for 6 Kinect launch titles:
Kinect Joyride - 5/10
Kinectimals - 7/10
Kinect Adventures - 6/10
Kinect Sports - 7/10
Your Shape: Fitness Evolved - 6/10

What I mean is "oh fu--! Misprint!"
Or rather a mistake in marketing. Note the "4g" xbox s is actually gloss, not matte. There could easily be confusion with the art assets for the add, or simply putting a 4 where there should be a 5 in the price. A $550 bundle + extra game for $468? Surely not!
Then again, M$ are pushing Kinect pretty hard, part of there half-billion marketing could be heavily discounted bundles. Maybe.

Can I venture a suggestion that, if you are in a wheelchair, perhaps Dance Central just isnt for you?
However, if you rig up a bungie cord to your ceiling with a harness (like those things they trap babies in) and film yourself getting a high score, I bet you'd get on Oprah or that one with the lol-lesbian.

Dance Central is the extreme case where it is absolutely impossible as those harness contraptions don't exist for adults but Kinect Joyride, Kinect Adventures, Kinectimals and parts of Kinect Sports look like disabled people could possibly play them if they could calibrate with the system. Maybe that is what they took out of the hardware to cut down costs. Who knows.

Meh, don't really need the Kinect yet. Had a try playing Just Dance 2 yesterday. No camera. Just the Wii waggle. And I guess the fun is trying to imitate the choreography rather than your scoring. It even had Austen Power's intro music, the music that plays where Powers is nekkid and his privates keeps getting obstructed.
Although the fidelity of the music in Just Dance games are not CD-quality. More like a slightly muffled MP3 quality.
