I currently don't have a permanent internet connection and I don't exactly have a phone line to do a typical broadband connection so I'm looking for some wireless/mobile internet plans (not too sure what correct term is). At the moment it's kinda a tossup between prepaid and postpaid. The iPrimus Speedster 1GB (http://www.iprimus.com.au/PrimusWeb/HomeSolutions/MobileBroadband3G/) plan sounds good for $30/m as it essentially means unlimited internet (albeit at dial-up speeds) but it's locked in a 24 month plan (I'm not sure if I'm going to be living in these conditions for that long) and I was hoping there could one where I could pay a bit less for a smaller allowance. On the other hand, I could get a Three Mobile Broadband (http://www.three.com.au/cs/ContentServer?c=Page&pagename=Three%2FPage%2FBusinessVideoCallingTempla te&cid=1221530705788) for $30/m and get 2GB or a similar prepaid plan and not get locked into a contract.

Ideally, I would like a cheap postpaid plan with a small allowance and shaping and a short contract but this is a very long shot. What would you guys recommend?

No phone as in you don't pay for one, or as in the physical line doesn't exist?

Naked adsl. Look it up

for some reason that just brings into my mind a naked guy holding a string-and-cup device trying to plug it into his computer to get internet

I've been using Optus prepaid for like 12 months. Usually spend $40 per month for 2GB allowance.

Works fine for games (some spiking).
Can't voice chat usually (Skype is fine).
Won't be downloading big patches on that limit - I get around this by piggybacking off friends (smaller patches are a different story).

Yeah I don't have a physical line of any sort so even Naked ADSL is out of the question.

I was thinking of getting a prepaid wireless usb stick because I'm out and about a fair bit and would like internet on the go.

Best deals so far look like Vodafone or Virgin which both will give me 2GB for ~$30 lasting a month. Anyone know what they're like for coverage, particularly in regional areas?

It's either that or I could sign up for a plan with my current ISP and get 1GB for $20 a month or 4GB for $35 a month (with excess data at 10c per MB) and they use the Optus network.

Not going to be using it for much except email and browsing

You can email & web browse with smartphones via 3G, you realise?

Yeah, but I do not have a smartphone and have no intention of buying one in the near future

It will cost you roughly the same as those atrocious mobile internet 'deals'. Plus you will have a sweet phone.

Okay, let me put it this way: I spend roughly $40 per month TOTAL on mobile phone bills. That includes paying for my 32gb 3GS and 1gb of data. But hey, spend 80% of that price on the shitty internet alone, it's cool.

New phones like the Samsung Galaxy S have wireless DLNA sharing, so you can set it up to create a wireless hotspot to share your plans included data with any wireless device. Would be absolutely bloody ideal in your situation, if it works as advertised. Awesome phone, too, I believe.

Just wondering, what plan are you on? It sounds tempting.
